It was past midnight in X city. The shimmering lights flicker in the distance as the starry night sky sweeps over the city that never seemed to have a dull moment.
The big claws of the silvery moon shone diligently through the open balcony of Raine's room. It cast a perfect shadow of her in a lacy pink nightdress sitting on the bed with a crestfallen expression.
She looked up to glance at the man in front of her for a long time as if trying to memorize his perfect features. With teary eyes and a raspy voice she finally found her tongue.
"Do you have to go?" she whispered and her voice was as silent as the midnight sky. The figure looked down at her with a slight gleam in his misty grey eyes, his long lashes almost made it impossible to see his eyeballs.
He raised his hands and caressed Raine's cheeks slightly and she flinched at the touch of his hands. His hands were cold, too cold to be a human's but somehow that icy cold hands touched the softest spot her heart.
She didn't know when she let out a tear until the salty liquid hit her lips slightly and she shuddered.
Raising her voice a little, she asked again, "Why do you have to leave me?"
This time, the figure crouched down to her height, still caressing her cheeks as he placed a soft kiss on her forehead. He wanted to stay longer but he knew that if he did, everything he had ever worked for will go downhill.
Raine clutched both sides of his arms with her tiny hands tightly and more tears flowed down her eyes.
Looking at the scene, he felt that his heart was being stabbed by thousands of tiny needles. He knew if he stayed longer, his last resolve will be broken so he immediately blew softly into her ear and whispered, "Go to sleep, my love."
As if driven by a spell, Raine immediately shut her eyes tightly and drifted off the sleep. The man placed her carefully on the bed and stared at her for what seemed like forever.
He finally planted soft kisses on her forehead, eyes, nose, and cheeks and when he got to her lips, he stared at them for a long time before quickly averting his gaze back to her face. Kissing her on the lips would be like digging his own grave so he caressed her silky auburn hair softly before finally whispering into the vast and silent night.
"I have to go Raine, but I'll be back soon..." With that said, he immediately disappeared into the dark night.
As Raine slept, she had a terrible dream and kept muttering softly, "Jedrek please don't go, please don't, you promised me....."
She had beads of sweat on her forehead and her long lashes quivered softly. Her soft pink lips continued moving incoherently, making silent sounds and that night turned out to be the most terrible night of her life.
The next morning she woke up with a brain-splitting headache as the dappled sun shone through her light linen curtain, bringing with it a flurry of the early morning activity.
Quickly, she jumped out of bed with the expectation to see him standing by the window but he wasn't there. She checked everywhere, her closet, the bathroom before finally settling in on the balcony but still there was no trace of him anywhere as if he never existed.
So it wasn't just a dream...
Thump!!!
She fell to her knees with a choking sensation on her chest and she clutched her chest tightly as if trying to numb the pain in her heart. Who knew that she would ever grow so attached to a creature of the night and now she had to bear the consequences.
Tears brimmed down her eyes softly and she broke into choking sobs immediately, "You promised me, you did...Please come back.." She whispered but only got a response from the soft early morning breeze indicating that no one was hearing her.
He left...
He really left...
