Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Weight of Rejection

"Hmm, not that one. That outfit is too short. Now, that dress is perfect." I mumbled under my breath, choosing the right clothing for my outing.

I was just finishing getting dressed when all of a sudden, the sound of trampling feet entered my room.

I started to hyperventilate, as they walked closer toward me. Not knowing who it was, my mind was racing at everything that was going on.

Who's there? What do they want from me? I thought to myself, as I started breathing heavily.

Silence. Impending quiet in the room was all I could hear. Then slowly, the door creaked open.

Startled by this, my heart started pounding in my chest with each second that passed.

Slam! My door was pushed open with such force that it startled me to death.

"Anabelle... Anabelle!" I overheard someone whispering my name.

Who could it be calling me? I whispered under my breath, as their words lingered in my ear.

Curious to see who it was, I abruptly turned around, not expecting who was right in front of my face.

Alisa was there with her arms crossed over her chest.

Doesn't she know she is not supposed come into my room without knocking? I wondered whilst digging through my open draw.

She always was mischievous, but today, there is something else at play. Whatever it is, I can't worry about it. I have something else on my mind.

"Anabelle, you have to come quick! Something happened to Kaden!" She declared with a sinister grin.

I rolled my eyes while listening to her rambling. My mind raced at everything she was saying.

Then, I spoke, my voice tinged with anger at her for barging in.

"Alisa, you know you shouldn't scare me like that!" I scolded her, trying to catch my breath.

"I'm sorry sis. But it's urgent, you must come with me at once." She whispered while pulling me by my arm.

I sighed, not understanding what Alisa was implying. She is my baby sister. But I wonder if our mom has something to do with her acting this way?

"I don't believe you!" I screamed, ready to deny what she said to me.

Alisa huffed angrily before speaking. "If you don't believe me, I will have to make you!" She declared, and then started singing a song.

Then, out of nowhere, a picture started to form in front of me.

I saw Kaden standing alone in the forest, a sad smile on his face. Seeing him like that, broke my heart. It was as though I wished to be there for him. But I couldn't because I was still in my room.

What happened to him? Is he alright? Is he injured? I yelled, urgency filling me.

"If you want to find out, then you have to follow me." She said, and turned to walk out the door.

Begrudgingly, I followed her, hoping it wasn't a trap.

Right as we inched closer to the door, my footsteps faltered. There was something plaguing my mind that I needed an answer to.

I don't know why, but something was off. Yet the concern I have for him was stronger than anything I knew about.

Before I knew it, I was running out the door. As I ran further and further down the path, my footsteps started picking up speed.

The closer I got to the forest, my heart started beating faster inside my chest.

Something doesn't feel right. With each step, my heart feels as heavy as a rock. I thought to myself as I inched closer to where Kaden was standing.

"I reject you, Anabelle as my mate!" Kaden declared with a loud growl.

As every word vibrated, the ground under my foot shook violently, causing me to stumble.

"I'm not going to fall." I whispered under my breath while reaching my hand out trying to find something to hold onto.

With each spoken word, my chest started to tighten, and my vision started to blur.

I felt my whole crumbling as the family I thought I once would have is now gone.

I can't believe he is doing this to me! Why would he? Doesn't he understand the importance of having a mate? I wondered as the words fell from his mouth.

Everything he said, was like a knife twisting in my gut, and there was nothing I could do about it.

I muttered, "Why would you do this!?" I needed to understand where it was all coming from.

But his next words was something that I wouldn't expect to stay the least.

"I can't have a weak mate. And you my dear, are the weakest of the whole pack!" Kaden spoke, his voice tinged with malice.

Then, he walked away, leaving me to get my emotions in check.

I can't f*cking believe he would do this to me! I waited for so many years to have a mate. And now, am I ever going to have wait years for a second chance mate? Or will I get one at all?

As those words lingered in the air, I felt my heart shattering into pieces. Tears started to form in my eyes, but I quickly wiped it away. I didn't want the people of our pack to see me as weak.

What is the meaning of this? Why would he say such words to me? I pondered as shadows started forming in my eyes.

Before I fainted, my nose perked up at a delicious smell. Is that pine I smell? I thought while my eyes opened and closed slowly.

Each time they would close, I could faintly hear the person's voice. And it was oddly comforting, yet being rejected by my mate was at the forefront of my mind, that I couldn't focus.

"It's alright. I got you." A gruff voice spoke into my ear, sending shivers down my spine.

As I was about to fall, somebody's strong arms held onto me, stopping me from getting hurt.
