Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Power of Mates

As their words made their way to my ears, my fists started clenching and unclenching.

Anger started rising in my chest at everything they spoke.

"How could they say that about someone they don't know?" I whispered, my heart sinking with each second that passed.

While their words lingered, unknowingly, I started digging my long nails into the palm of my hand.

After awhile, the faint stench of blood wafted through my nose.

"What's that smell?" I spoke, my voice laden with curiosity.

As far as I knew, there was no blood coming from anywhere. Is it just in my mind? Or is someone bleeding out?

"Ana, our palm is bleeding." My wolf replied softly.

Hearing her voice, my heart jumped inside my chest. "Wait! What do you mean?" I questioned, uncertainty in my words.

I couldn't believe what she was telling me. I never did that to myself, and there was no way I could detect the smell of my own blood. Did I really cause myself harm?

Despite the inner turmoil in my heart, Christian tightened his grip. As he did that, he pulled me closer. A nice gesture which urged me to stay in this moment with him.

This is awesome. I just wish my mind would stop playing tricks on me. I thought to myself, whilst his mouth rubbed against my forehead.

"I see how the way they speak are getting to you. Don't think about it. Only think about the bond we share." He spoke softly in my ear, causing me to blush slightly.

Every word he revealed was like a lullaby, calming me down. Slowly, my fists loosened just enough to let out a deep sigh.

"Okay, I hope you know what you're doing." I answered cheekily.

My little response I needed to use to break the doubt that was filling my heart little by little.

He giggled slightly, his deep voice resonating a vibration that I felt through me. It was like a soft blanket wrapping itself around me.

"My dear, I always know." He retorted, then kissed me on the cheek.

It was quick and gentle, and whispers once again made it to our ears. But this time much louder.

"Alpha, don't you think she's not fit to rule alongside you. Let alone our pack!?" They declared, their voice ringing in the hallway.

"Silence!" Christian declared loudly.

As his voice echoed down the hall, everyone immediately stopped in their tracks.

"What's that? Why is he yelling like this?" They murmured before quieting down.

The way he spoke, reverberated power that no one possessed. But, he had it.

Christian stood straighter, his hand in mine. "Anabelle is my mate. You have no right to speak bad about her. If any of you speak malice against my Ana, you will be banned from this pack!" He told them, authority ringing in his voice.

I shifted from one foot to the other, doubt creeping in my mind. They are correct about me. I'm only a weak wolf who'll hinder their pack. I don't have a right to be here.

Just as I thought, one of the pack members walked fast toward Christian. Her eyes were green with envy.

"Dear, don't you think Ana should know." The woman spoke, her voice filled with anger.

Then she walked closer to him, her breast rubbing his chest.

Seeing this, my teeth clenched, anger, and jealousy rising in my veins. Was my life about to go up into flames before I knew it? Or am I only misunderstanding the whole thing?

How dare this woman be so close and intimate with my mate! She has to know that there are repercussions to every action.

To my surprise, he gingerly removed her hand from him, then walked backwards.

"Giselle, how dare you be this close to me." He stated calmly and looked at me.

His eyes bored into mine, a silent communication between us. We're in this together. Just like having a mate is new for him, it's new for me too. I don't have to do it alone.

With that in mind, I strengthened my stance, and placed my hand on his shoulder. Whispering into his ear, I spoke, "Chris, I'm with you no matter what. And I need our people to see that."

Looking at the pack, I crossed my arms over my chest. "Just because you may think I'm weak. Or I don't belong here, doesn't make it true. I'm mated to your Alpha, and there is nothing that will stand in our way." I stated strongly, hoping that they would back down in the fight between me leading and as a helper with Christian.

As I spoke my final words, the murmurs started up again. This time it was louder than earlier. The crowd started pumping their fists as they spewed words of disbelief.

"How do you think you're going to lead this pack? You don't even know what we have gone through!?" They said, defiance in their voice.

I can't believe that when I try and assert my dominance, they would defy my words! I mumbled angrily.

But I wasn't willing to let them get in the way of me and Christian's bond. While my heart was torn between being loyal to Christian, and sticking to myself, Giselle smiled widely.

"Alpha, you know it's important that you do what the pack needs. And if that's not allowing her to rule alongside you, then so be it." She whispered softly, just enough for me to overhear her.

What is she trying to do by speaking to him that way? Is he still willing to defend me? Or is he going to go along with what she said? I wondered as each word Giselle spoke were like sharp knives cutting through my chest.

Right as I began doubting his loyalty, his voice rang in my ear. "Enough! How many times do I have to tell you to get the f*ck away from me!? But you don't listen!"
