Lilia's dress clung to her. It was soaked in blood, some hers and the rest belonging to the people before her. She was certain she was the last one alive. Where did they go wrong?
Lasers were trained at her from the front and only a brick wall laid behind. Her gun was empty. There was simply no room for her to advance nor retreat.
One question floated around in her mind.
Who was the traitor?
She thought back to the dead bodies that led her here. Who was missing?
She looked at the army of black before her. All private soldiers, only a simple silver insignia stamped into their helmets.
A break was made in their formation and a person emerged. He was dressed in a gray suit, impeccable tailored to fit his tall, lean build. His dark eyes shun with mirth and mischief. On any day he would have lifted her mood but today would not be so.
It took her a minute to fully process this but she recognized him. His hair was freshly combed and his faced cleanly shaved.
He didn't look like the same man who underwent the same stress with her for the past ten years. He didn't look like her husband.
But it was the same familiar outline.
It was him. Her heart began to palpitate. He'd disappeared for weeks. She thought he was dead. But he was here, healthy and strong. She wanted to rush to him but she was also aware of her current situation.
What exactly did he have to do with this?
"Lilia my love," he said.
"Peter?" she asked. "What's going on? How come you're here?"
"Don't become too alarmed," Peter said. "I have missed you." His voice was filled with sweetness and affection. It was soothing to the ears but terrifying at the same time. It was like he was using a psychological trick on her.
She didn't respond to his statement. "I thought you were dead."
"I know honey but it's for the best. We can live in peace after this. If you want to." His voice became more mellow. He was definitely using some form of mind technique.
"What are you doing Peter? Everyone from our team is dead." Lilia asked.
But she was beginning to form the answers to her own questions. It was him. He was the only one who could do this.
It didn't make full sense but he was clearly standing with the enemy. She was not stupid! How dare he show himself and use such intimate terms with her. He was a traitor.
"You betrayed us." was the only thing she could say.
His face cracked into a smile. "My love, there is no such thing as that. You will see the benefit of this in the future. Think of our child." Her heart rate calmed a little.
This wasn't right! She wasn't supposed to be calm. She should have lunged at him already. On any day she could have beaten his ass but she strangely didn't feel the strong urge to avenge her comrades. He was definitely doing something to her.
Peter did bring up a point. She was still pregnant. It was the reason she hadn't taken her suicide capsule. But what was the point of having a child with such a treacherous father. What pride can that child have? He was definitely not the father of her child!
She needed to escape this place and find a place to recuperate. She was already bleeding from previous injury.
"Lilia, I only request one thing from you. Tell us who is the true leader."
Lilia opened her mouth. The true leader? Why would she reveal that?
"Why would I tell you that? You betrayed us, you betrayed me! What right do you have to know more of the inner workings of our operation? You can just go to hell." Lilia said.
Peter's face turned dark. There was a flash of astonishment in his eyes. He was not expecting such a strong reaction. Instead, Lilia should have been quickly giving him answers.
Lilia realized that something was wrong, although her blood loss was getting to her, she shouldn't be so calm in such a situation. There must have been some form of mind control.
Peter's voice changed. It became so cold, she felt shivers all over her skin. "You know, I have been so patient with you over these years. I have lowered myself to be the lover to the likes of you. You don't get to use that language to your future sovereign."
Future sovereign? Who did he think…
His words made her realize something. Their enemy had a son that was said to look nothing like his parents. He was the perfect engineering of his parent's latent genes. Was this him? Did they lead the big wolf into their camp?
That couldn't be. Lilia didn't have time for shock and regrets. She had to figure out how to escape.
"You are not my sovereign you bastard!"
"Please watch what you say, "another voice said, emerging from the formation go stand next to Peter.
It took no time for Lilia to recognize her. It was Ping Moli. It was the little bitch that always followed Peter like a love-sick puppy. They must have been having an affair.
Lilia laughed. "So now there's two traitors."
Peter calmly looked at her, "We can't be traitors if we were never on your side Lili. This world can't just belong to anyone. Decree or no decree, some shadow can't run the world."
"You and your impostor sovereign family will burn Peter," Lilia said.
Moli wasted no time to run up to Lilia.
Pang!
Moli delivered a slap on Lilia's face. Lilia smiled at the pain. A blade slipped into the palm of her hand. She wasted no time in sinking it into Moli's chest.
Fresh blood flowed onto her hand. She twisted the blade. It was coated with a fast acting poison. No one could save her.
Moli slumped against her unable to move.
