Chapter 22 - Echoes of Siblings

Preparation for Battle

The briefing room buzzed with tense energy as Emjay's team gathered around the large tactical map spread across the table. The flickering lights overhead cast sharp shadows on the worn faces of warriors who had seen too much, yet remained steadfast. They had received intel about an enemy stronghold—a location believed to house key enemy operatives, including individuals with ties to their past.

Emjay stood at the front, his voice calm but firm. "We've confirmed enemy activity here," he pointed to the marked area on the map, "a fortified compound with multiple entry points, layered defenses, and high enemy presence."

Kazuki leaned forward, eyes narrowing. "How do we get in without triggering every alarm?"

Emjay traced a route on the map. "We split into two squads. Squad A—me, Kazuki, Nami, and Yano—will create a diversion at the eastern entrance. Squad B—Crimson, Bleaf, and Leon sticking with me—will infiltrate from the west, using the chaos to breach the inner perimeter."

Leon added, "I can handle quick extractions if needed, but we stick to the plan. Minimal risks."

Crimson smirked. "Minimal risks? In our line of work?"

Laughter broke the tension, but the gravity of the mission lingered.

Emjay continued, "Our objective is twofold: disrupt the enemy's operations and gather intel on their next move. We anticipate heavy resistance, especially near the central command hub."

The team spent hours detailing their strategy—entry points, fallback routes, and communication signals. They discussed potential enemy ambushes, mapped out the terrain, and even planned contingencies in case things went wrong.

Before dispersing, each member exchanged words of encouragement.

"Good luck out there," Nami said softly, her hand briefly resting on Kai's shoulder.

Crimson turned to Bleaf. "Hey, remember what you promised me? Keep your head in the game."

Bleaf gave a solemn nod. "I won't forget."

Kazuki and Leon exchanged a firm handshake, silent understanding passing between them. Emjay gave each team member a nod, his steady gaze offering reassurance.

The Calm Before the Storm

As night fell, the team gathered one last time before deployment. The atmosphere was heavy with unspoken words, each member lost in their thoughts.

Crimson broke the silence with his usual humor. "When this is over, drinks are on me."

Bleaf chuckled. "I'll hold you to that."

Nami smiled faintly. "Make sure we all come back to collect."

With final nods and brief embraces, they moved out, the darkness swallowing their figures as they disappeared into the night.

The Battle Begins

The compound loomed ahead, its dark silhouette stark against the moonlit sky. Squad A initiated the diversion, explosions lighting up the sky as gunfire erupted. Enemy soldiers scrambled, creating the opening Squad B needed.

Bleaf moved with precision, his focus razor-sharp. Crimson covered him, his sharp aim cutting through enemy lines. Leon teleported strategically, disorienting the opposition.

The battle raged on, fierce and relentless. Blades clashed, bullets flew, and the air was thick with smoke and determination. The enemy fought back with equal ferocity, but Emjay's team pressed on, their unity and training guiding them through the chaos.

Crimson's voice crackled through the comms. "We're in. Push forward!"

Bleaf led the charge, his movements a blend of calculated strikes and instinctive reactions. Every step forward was a testament to their resilience, every victory a hard-fought triumph.

Bleaf vs. Lexa

Amid the chaos, Bleaf found himself face-to-face with Lexa. The sight of her, once an ally, now an adversary, hit harder than any blow.

"Lexa," Bleaf breathed, his voice a mix of disbelief and anger.

Lexa smirked coldly. "Didn't expect to see me, did you?"

"Why?" Bleaf demanded. "Why betray us?"

"Because your side was never mine to begin with," she snapped.

They circled each other, weapons raised, their gazes locked. The battlefield around them faded into the background as the weight of their history bore down on them.

Lexa lunged first, her movements sharp and precise. Bleaf barely managed to deflect her attack, the force of her strikes surprising him. She wasn't holding back.

"You've grown stronger," Bleaf admitted, blocking another strike.

Lexa scoffed. "And you're still predictable."

She twisted, using her deflection powers to redirect Bleaf's attacks back at him. Every strike he threw was sent right back, forcing him to dodge his own strength.

Bleaf clenched his jaw. She had always been quick, but now, she was a step ahead. He needed to outthink her.

"You've been paying attention," Lexa sneered as she sidestepped another attack, flicking her wrist to send his momentum against him.

"Always have," Bleaf grinned.

He activated his power, manifesting an iron arm. The weight settled against his shoulder, the metal gleaming under the flickering lights of battle.

Lexa's eyes narrowed. "You've taken notice of my abilities, haven't you?"

Bleaf nodded. "I don't like losing."

Their battle intensified, each blow sending shockwaves through the air. Lexa's deflection ability made it nearly impossible to land a direct hit, while Bleaf's iron arm countered her agility with sheer force. They clashed, again and again, neither gaining the upper hand.

"You were Crimson's stepbrother," Bleaf said between breaths. "Why leave him?"

Lexa faltered, just for a second. "I had my choice, and he had his. He was always kind to me, always cared. But war changes things. It made us distant. We talked less. Fought for different causes."

Bleaf pressed on. "But he still sees you as family."

Lexa's expression darkened. "Family isn't always enough."

Their battle continued, but now, the weight of their words hung between them. Bleaf could see it—the hesitation, the conflict in her eyes. For all her talk of loyalty to the enemy, a part of her still held onto the past.

But war didn't wait for second chances.

Bleaf moved faster than she anticipated, using her moment of doubt against her. He feinted, making it seem like he was striking from the right, but at the last second, twisted his body and delivered a devastating blow with his iron arm. The force shattered through her deflection field before she could adjust.

Lexa staggered back, eyes wide. She clutched her wound, blood seeping through her fingers.

She sank to her knees, her breath ragged. "Crimson…" she whispered.

Bleaf knelt beside her, watching as the light dimmed in her eyes. "He would've forgiven you."

A weak smile touched her lips. "Maybe in another life."

With that, she was gone.

Regrouping

As phase one concluded, the team regrouped. Bleaf approached Crimson quietly.

"She's gone," Bleaf said gently. "She spoke of you before the end. She still cared."

Crimson's face was unreadable at first, then he let out a bitter laugh. "Of course, she did. Family is complicated like that."

Bleaf placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "You're not alone man."

Crimson managed a grin. "Well, at least I don't have to worry about awkward family reunions anymore."

The team shared a somber laugh, the bond between them growing stronger in the face of loss.

Reflection and Resolve

As the dust settled, Emjay looked out over the battlefield. The fires of battle still smoldered, but a sense of accomplishment lingered amidst the ash.

"Phase two begins soon," he announced quietly.

The team prepared themselves, both physically and mentally, for the next stage. They tended to wounds, shared quiet conversations, and reflected on the battles fought and the ones yet to come.

Crimson, despite his grief, found strength in humor. "Guess I'm officially the funniest person in the family now."

Bleaf chuckled, the tension easing slightly. "You were always the funniest. She just had better timing."

As they readied for phase two, the team stood together, not just as soldiers but as a family forged in the fires of war. Their bond, tested and tempered, was their greatest strength.

And with that, the chapter closed, leaving the team to brace for what was to come.
