"You really took your time sleeping." Herald said.
Herald sat down on the chair beside him. "Yeah, I guess I was really tired." David replied. "I'm sorry about what I did in morning. It was wrong, I was hungry and I wasn't thinking straight."
Herald gave a little smile "Don't worry about that, I know you're going through a lot."
David's face changed, he then walked to the living room and Herald stood up and followed him behind.
"So when are you getting a job? because you can't say jobless forever."
David's mood changed and you can sense the anger building up inside him
"How many times will I have to tell you, I have tried but all the places I go to say that I'm not good enough, what else do you want from me?"
"I'm just trying to help you because you won't be able to survive in this city for long without a job." Herald tried to reason with him.
"I don't need your help."
"Oh, no you don't but you need that kids help."
David got furious, "He is my best friend."
"You are so naive, when are you going to understand, that word means nothing."
David could not control himself anymore and he just said anything that came to his mind at that moment.
"Why are we even talking about me? What about you? What do you do for a living?" He yelled
Herald did not say anything else, "Oh now you're quite, do you think this is my fault, my father left when I was ten and what did he leave behind? A broken little kid who doesn't know how to do anything except how to shoot a gun." Tear started to form in his eyes, and Herald still kept quite not knowing what to say. "Didn't anyone tell him that I needed to learn something else like maybe how to fix a car? Oh but no it's how to use a gun and how's that helping is me now?" He said yelling.
David walked to his room immediately and shut the door close. Herald was feeling bad for David because what he said was true. He started think of how he could help David and that was what went through his mind the whole evening.
Moments later Herald wore a suitable cloth to go out and he was still thinking about what happened between him and David. He went to the door, stretched his hand to the handle then opened it. He walked out of the house and closed the door behind him.
It was dark outside, the streets was full of young people doing their business.
Herald walked to a club owned by the same man he was talking to the other day. He used the back door to avoid too many people seeing him.
At the back entrance, there was a huge looking man and it was the bouncer. Herald walked up to the bouncer and they greeted each other, from the greeting it seemed like they knew each other well.
"How business going?" Herald asked the bouncer.
"Good."
"Is he in?"
"Yes, he just came in a while ago."
"Alright thanks." Herald said as he walked into the club.
Herald is a lieutenant in a cartel and the man he was talking to the other day was the boss of the main cartel in the city Leonard Fitchens.
Herald started as a hitman for the cartel when he was young and he was a good one too, years passed and he was promoted to lieutenant.
He came to see Leonard today to talk to him about letting David join the cartel. He knew that he was taking a big step for David but he has been thinking about it for a while now and after the talk he just had with David, he knew he had to do something.
He walked into the club and went straight to the spot Leonard regularly stays. From a distance, he could see Leonard sitting down on a lounge chair with two girls beside him, giving that smile that always seemed to annoy herald, his belly as big as a watermelon.
As Herald walked towards Leonard, he was not completely sure if he should be doing this.
"Herald!" Leonard said surprised. "I wasn't expecting to see you."
Leonard using his assent that also seems to annoy Herald, in fact everything about Leonard annoyed him or maybe he was just tired of this job.
"Yes, can I talk to you in private for a moment?"
"Come on, cheer up and enjoy yourself, have fun for once in your life. You know I rarely see you smile."
"It's really important."
"Ok ok let's go." Leonard said while standing up "Don't go anywhere." He told the girls sitting down.
They both walked to a room and Leonard's bodyguard followed him behind.
"So what is so important that you brought me all the way here when I was enjoying myself?"
"Look, I need a favor from you."
"What do you need?"
Herald took a deep breath "I need you to take in my nephew into the work."
"Hmmm, I don't think that is a good idea."
"Why isn't it? I been working for this cartel for a long time now and I just ask for this one thing."
"How are you sure we can trust him and what will he do."
"I can handle him and look, he is a really great shooter and he will be good for a hitman."
"I'm not sure I can do that." Leonard still thought that it was not a good idea.
"You know that we are lacking skilled men on the field and we need someone fresh and young." Herald tried to convince Leonard.
Leonard sat down to think about it and truly, it was a hard decision for him to make because this days, youngsters are very stubborn and hard to control. Taking David was a risk but Leonard also thought about the fact that the cartel needed some fresh blood.
"Give me time to think about it and in the meantime, bring him down tomorrow to the training house at 9 o'clock sharp let me see what he can do, I will be waiting for you." Leonard said standing up.
"That's great." Herald said. "You are not going to regret this."
Herald still did not show any emotion of happiness because he knew what he was getting David into.
"I hope so, ok now if you would excuse me I have to go back to enjoying myself, you should also try it too." Leonard said as he walked out of the room and his bodyguard followed.
