Two years later, David was now a teenager living with his uncle in a new city. The city was hard and also dangerous because of the cartels. There was so much violence in the city that even minding your own business will not guarantee your safety.
It was a cold morning in the city as usual. David was still sleeping, his room was small and his bed was on the floor. The walls had cracks and it had no wallpapers.
After a while David woke up, he slowly opened his eyes and then he started to think. He stood up stepping on his dirty cloths. He bent down and picked them up. He stretched a little and walked to the mirror next to his bed so he could see himself. After looking at himself, he went to take a shower.
After a while, he finished taking a shower so he left the shower and went to wear his cloths. He wore his usual black hoodie and blue jeans.
When he finished dressing, he walked slowly to the kitchen. To get to the kitchen he had to pass the living room. And when he got to the living room he saw his uncle sleeping on the couch, he was surprised to see him because his uncle was rarely home.
David's uncle, Herald Johnson, your typical lazy uncle who does not stay at home but goes to bars to drink most of the time, at least that was what David presumed. He was average in height with a beard.
David walked to the kitchen to get something to eat. There was not much to eat so he decided to get cereal. He check the kitchen but there was no cereal, he gave a sigh of annoyance because there was no other food in the house. His face showed his exact feeling of annoyance.
He still felt hungry so he decided to go out to get something to eat. He did not have any money so he thought of going to the store where Jeremy works. Last year, Jeremy got a job at a convenient store.
As he was about to walk out of the apartment, he tried his best not to wake his uncle, so he walked slowly and quietly.
Herald was like those people that even when fast asleep they can still notice everything that was happening around then and he knew that David was walking quietly towards the exit but he waited until he reached the door.
David successfully reached the door without waking his uncle, which was what he thought. As he stretched his hand to grab the doorknob to open the door, he heard a voice behind him.
"Where are you going to?" Herald asked.
David was not surprised at all. "I'm going to get something to eat." He replied
Herald gave a disappointing sigh, and crossed his arms. "How long are you going to keep depending on that kid for food?"
David got annoyed with the question so he immediately opened the door and walked out of the house without giving any reply.
Since they came to this new city, David has been finding it hard to get a job and whenever he tries, he will not do the work well and for the past year now, David has been taking free foodstuff from the store Jeremy works in.
When he got the store, before he opened the door the thought of what his uncle said came to him but he neglected it and walked in.
He looked around the store and moved around slowly. There were only few people in the store and it was because Leonard Fitchens, the boss of the cartel in the city was in the store and people who knew about him feared him, they knew that anywhere he went there would be trouble.
David was confused because whenever he came to the store, it was normally packed with people. He decided to walk around before going to meet Jeremy.
He walked slowly and at a distance he could see a group of men talking, he was too curious to find out what it was. He pulled his hoodie up, so not to seek attention and went closer to where they were.
David saw the men with guns and it only made him more curious, so as he was getting closer, he heard his name from a distance and it was Jeremy calling him. Immediately he turned his attention to Jeremy and walked to him.
While he was walking to Jeremy, he turned back and saw the men leaving the store. He reached Jeremy and they both were looking at the men leaving the store.
"Who are they?" David asked while still looking.
"I don't know, but apparently most of the customers don't like them." Jeremy answered as they both stopped looking.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, when they walked in, half the customers walked out, which was really weird."
David was still curious on whom they were and Jeremy could see that David was abstracted.
"So why did you come here?" Jeremy asked
"I want some cereal." He replied while he walked slowly to get the cereal.
David went on to get the cereal, he went to the cereal shelf then started to look for his favorite cereal but he could not find it so he took another cereal and headed to Jeremy.
He walked to Jeremy and while looking at the cereal he said. "I couldn't find my favorite cereal."
Jeremy did not answer and David looked at him. He caught Jeremy looking at a girl at the other end of the store picking an item, he tried to get his attention back but it seemed like Jeremy was completely lost.
David walked in front of him, snapped his fingers and then Jeremy got himself. "What did you say?" Jeremy asked.
From the way Jeremy was looking at the girl, David understood what was happening.
"Who is that?" David asked while looking at the girl.
"I…..I don't know, she comes here really often to buy stuff."
"Wait wait wait, are you crushing on her?"
"I don't know."
David was really surprise because Jeremy had never crushed on a girl since they have known each other.
