Chapter 6 - Determination

It was late in the night now, so Lucy thought the only source of light was a single light bulb hanging on a wire in the middle of the room. The concrete walls were filled up with cement patches, it was obvious the building was worn out. Lucy began rubbing her cuffed hands together to warm her up a little.

She couldn't believe it, her in a police station's interrogation room. It was cold, really cold. Lucy closed her eyes shut as hot tears streamed down her cheeks. She couldn't believe her own husband sent her here, for something she had no hand in. He didn't even hear her out, instead he decided to believe that despicable woman blindly. She was going to make sure that both Roselyn and Martha were going to go through hell for this, she thought to herself. " Anyone who had a hand in this will pay!." Lucy hissed, her two hands going over her belly.

Today was full of surprises, first she found out that she was pregnant after five years of marriage, then she confirmed that her loving husband had gotten another woman pregnant, her friend nonetheless. And to top it all off, the icing on the big birthday cake? She was being accused of her mother-in-law's murder.

She didn't even understand how any of this happened, and the syringes in the bag she bought?. Lucy didn't have a doubt Roselyn had a hand in that, she couldn't believe she trusted her. Lucy sighed as she fisted her hair.

Things were happening and she felt like it was out of her control, like she couldn't do anything to stop it. How she got into the police station still baffled her, her mother in-law was dead. Dead?, it was still a shock to her. The image of Louisa dying in her arms couldn't get out of her head. Lucy cried even more in realization, they were never on good terms that was true, but there was never a single day she could remember she had wished Louisa death.

Lucy wasn't heartless, she loved that woman. Even though she never got any affection in return she still cared for Louisa. A sigh escaped her lips not knowing how long she has been in here.

The police officer who arrested her soon walked in making Lucy sit up straight. Looking at her eyes you could tell she's been crying since she was brought in here, but the officer didn't say anything as he sat down on the iron chair in front of her. " Mrs Rodman." The police officer called out. " I hope you know that the charges that Will be filed against you are for murder right?."

" I am an officer." Lucy answered, rubbing her fingers together. " This isn't a small case ma'am, you being the main suspect doesn't help you either. Why did you kill her?." The police officer asked softly. " If you admit to doing this crime, I'll try to help you lessen your punishment as harshly as I can. But you have to take the first step, you have to admit to the crime you committed, It'll help you alot if you tell the truth."

" But officer." Lucy whimpered. " I swear to God I had nothing to do with this. I was coming back from the pharmacy when I found my door open. I thought my husband had come home but no, I realized it wasn't him. I then thought a theft was taking place in my house and I grabbed a bat, that was when I saw my mother in-law on the floor with foam coming out of her mouth. I tried calling for help but my husband was not picking up his phone."

" If that's the case why didn't you call the police or run to your neighbors for help." the officer asked. " Believe me sir, that didn't cross my mind once. Calling my husband was the first thing that came to mind, his mother was the woman on the ground. He was the first person I'm supposed to call, he is my husband."

" And the intoxications found in the bag you bought from the pharmacy?.. Those liquids are used in killing rodents. Do you understand the implications you're faced with?." the officer asked.

Lucy soon zoned out. Poison, rat poison?.. she was sure that wasn't part of what she paid for. Oh goodness, what has she gotten herself into. Lucy started to cry again. " Sir, I didn't buy those, I swear!."

None of this was even supposed to be happening to her, she was supposed to be happy, celebrating even. After finding out about her pregnancy she was supposed to feel nothing but joy and happiness. But now, she was feeling anger, betrayal and sadness, mostly sadness.

" Well ma'am, the evidence against you is very strong. Your words wouldn't be able to help you alone, you need hard solid evidence to prove that you have nothing to do with your mother in-law's murder. I'm afraid if you don't have anything to back your claims.. you'll be spending quite some time in prison." The officer said. " Maybe you have a receipt? the things you bought from the pharmacy at least you have got to have evidence of the goods you bought?."

" I'm sorry sir, but I don't get receipts from the pharmacy. I just pay for the drugs I buy and leave." Lucy sniffed. " Ma'am telling me the truth would help you, I've said this before. You have to accept the accusations against you, if not you'll be dragging this case out longer than necessary." the officer said " I suggest you think about what I've said, you'll be called to be on trial soon. I really think you should review your actions." The police officer sighed before standing up and leaving the room.

" But officer please believe me I didn't do it!... I swear to God and in my baby's life I didn't kill Louisa!." Lucy cried out calling after him. She buried her head in her palms before crying her eyes out into it. She didn't know why this was happening to her, her own husband didn't believe her. He has never doubted her intentions before, at least not until he slept with that witch she called her friend Martha. And to think she trusted her, to think she went and told her all her problems. From her problems with having a child to the issues she had with her mother in-law. And in return all she got was a stab in the back. Getting convicted for a crime she didn't commit was definitely not on her to do list, she was determined not to go down for something she didn't do.

She swore not to go to prison for this, her baby doesn't deserve to be born in a place like this. Her baby deserved so much, her baby even deserved things she couldn't provide, her baby deserved a better mother than she'd ever be, and she was willing to do anything to make sure that her baby would get that, Lucy wasn't going down, but even if she did?.. she wouldn't go down without causing a fight to remember.

" I have to think of something fast, I can not go down like this. I'm not alone anymore, I've got a baby to protect now. I have got to come up with something fast, think, think, Lucy think of something!." Lucy hissed. " Oh God what's happening to me, please I haven't done anything wrong to anyone." Lucy mumbled softly.
