Chapter 3 - Play Dead

Lucy was so excited about the news that she tried calling Dennis as she walked back home. " Come on Dennis, pick up your damned phone." Lucy hissed. It kept taking her to voicemail over and over again. She tried calling the house phone, maybe he was already home. Nobody answered, she expected that.

Finally walking into her front yard Lucy began searching her purse for the house key. With the keys in her hands she held them up to the door, finally noticing that the door was slightly open.

" What in the hell?.." Lucy muttered. " Did I forget to lock the door?." She asked herself. She was almost sure that she locked the door before leaving the house.

Maybe Dennis was already home?. Slowly opening the door, she walked into the house with caution. " Hello?.." Lucy called out. " A.. anyone home?.."

A robber might have gotten into the house. With that thought in her head, she dropped the bag in her hands on the floor. Lucy picked up a baseball bat and held it up on her shoulder, ready to hit any stranger that was in the house. " Is anyone here?." She made her way to the living room. The sound of the dining table moving soon caught her attention.

" Dennis?.. is that you?." Lucy asked, walking towards the table. Lucy set her confused gaze on the body moving violently on the ground. " Dennis!" The bat in her hands dropped to the ground immediately.

Rushing towards the body, she noticed the person on the ground wasn't her husband. It was her mother-in-law, Louisa Rodman. " Christ!, Louisa?.. what are you doing here.. what's wrong with you?." Lucy rushed out, pulling her mother-in-law's head on her lap.

The thick white foam pouring out of her mother-in-law's mouth scared her to death" What did you take Louisa?!.." Pulling out her phone she dialed Dennis' number, but his cell phone was now switched off. She tried calling again, again and again. But her husband wasn't answering.

Lucy didn't stop until she felt her mother-in-law wasn't moving anymore. Lucy couldn't move, her cell phone came crashing on the floor as hot tears streamed down her cheeks.

" Louisa?!." Lucy shook her mother-in-law's shoulder's violently, " Louisa if this is a joke it's not funny, wake up what's wrong with you!." Almost immediately Dennis came rushing into the house with Martha behind him.

An old friend of Lucy, what was she doing here.

" Lucy? what's wrong with you what happened..MOM!." Dennis hissed, pushing Lucy away from his mother taking her position. With his mother now on his lap he held her face in his arms. " Mom please wake up, it's me!.." Dennis stuttered. The white foam coming out from her mouth stained his hands. In realization Dennis paused, she was dead, his mother was dead, he slowly got up and turned to Lucy whose face was still laced with shock. Her mother in-law just died in her arms. " What in the devil's name have you done!." Dennis shouted towards her. " what..What do mean?.." Lucy asked, he was confusing her. " I haven't done a thing to anyone!."

" Your lying mouth better keep shut or I swear I'll shut it up for you." He hissed at her. " Dennis, what's wrong with you?" Lucy stuttered. She didn't understand why her husband was treating her this way. " Martha was right about you, about everything, you're nothing but a wretched barren murder. If I had listened to her my mother wouldn't be dead right now!".

" Dennis!." Lucy slowly stood up from the floor with wobbly legs. She couldn't believe it was her husband telling her this. " Watch what you say to me, I'm not a murderer and I'm not barren!"

" Lucy.. Lucy..Lucy." Martha chuckled softly. She was by the door watching the commotion she caused take effect. Walking towards them she smiled. " You're such a good liar, Roselyn told me everything, unfortunately she wasn't able to tell me in time to save Dennis' mother."

" What are you saying Martha?..what are you even doing here?." Martha smirked. " Oh please, stop pretending, your true colors are finally coming to light. Dennis here.." Martha smiled, putting her arm around his waist. " He has finally realized that you are nothing, absolutely nothing but a barren murder!.. He didn't listen to me now his mother has taken the fall!.." Martha pointed at the body still on the ground. " The good thing is that the police are on their way over here as we speak, and I'm going to give Dennis what you were never able to give him." Martha placed her palm on her tummy, rubbing it softly.

That was when Lucy noticed the obvious, the small swell showing through Martha's tight growth. That was when it hit her, Martha was her husband's mistress. Her husband actually got her pregnant, and of all the people he could have gotten pregnant he got Martha, of all the women in the world, it had to be her.

 Her friend.

" Dennis?.. is what she's saying true?.. she's the one you got pregnant? the one you had a one night stand with?.." Lucy asked, tears running down her cheeks. " Oh please Lucy!.. stop with the fake tears and act of sympathy, it's good you know the truth, better late than never they say these days–

" You bitch!" Lucy cussed, raising her hand to hit Martha. Dennis stepped in holding her hand before she could even near Martha's face. " This would be the last time you ever in your miserable life try to lay your hands on her again. Do I make myself clear?" Lucy couldn't believe her ears. She couldn't believe it was her husband in front of her right now. " As I said before Lucy, I now know everything. You never liked Louisa, she was always troubling you to have a child. Knowing you couldn't ever have one you decided to eliminate the one obstacle standing in your way. Roselyn told me everything." Martha stated.

" Roselyn?.. she..i ...what?, look I have no idea what you're going on and on about but I'm absolutely sure of one thing I didn't kill your mother believe me Dennis, she's my mother too i–

" Story for the gods Lucy, better yet you should be explaining how these got into the bag you brought from the pharmacy." Martha turned to the nylon bag Lucy dropped on the floor minutes ago. Emptying the contents that were in the bag on the floor, Lucy sighted some syringes with needles on them and some used drug packets she didn't recognize.

She was sure she didn't order them.

" Look what we have here, Roselyn was indeed right after all, you were planning to end your mother-in-law's life." Martha said, picking up a syringe. " I can't believe for the five whole years I was married to you, a murderer, if it wasn't for Martha bringing me to the light I would have never suspected you'd do something as vile as this. To think I loved you, to think I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you. To think I wanted to have children with you!" Dennis spat out.

" Are you even listening to yourself Dennis?, this woman here is lying to you. She's manipulating you and you're falling right into her trap!" Lucy pointed her finger at Martha, who was attached to Dennis' arm like a baby koala. The smirk on the woman's face only increased.

" Really?.. manipulation, that's what you're going with?." Dennis hissed. " The body, my mother's body on the floor, begs to differ with your explanation Lucy!."

" I'll say it again for you to hear Dennis, I didn't kill Louisa, she's like a mother to me. Besides I saw her like that on the floor when I walked into the house. I kept calling you over and over again but your cell phone wasn't going through. You've got to believe me, I beg of you! I'm your wife, not her."

" You are not my wife any longer Lucy, I would never stay married to my mother's killer." Dennis said like he was spitting venom at her. " I was not the one who murdered Louisa Dennis, why aren't you listening to me!"

" He isn't believing you because you, my dear Lucy, is nothing but a lying, barren, killer! Nothing less than that. You can't keep your greamy claws on him any longer, he is no longer obeying every order you place across. So

you should stop pretending."
