Chereads / Oh Well, I'm An Elf In The Apocalypse / Chapter 2 - Getting The Basics

Chapter 2 - Getting The Basics

Eventually, the two come across a tiny village, while the village had a couple of houses they were all normal sizes to Jason's confusion. "We are here!" Gracie says excitedly and flies off his shoulder. Jason only takes a moment to see the twenty or so houses around the area. "Is there a place I can stay nearby?" Jason worriedly asks, seeing dusk starting to take over the sky. It had not felt like they had walked that long so Jason realized he must have woken up late in the afternoon. "Sure, you can stay with me until you get a place!" Gracie smiled, saying, "Plus, if you don't know your way around here, I'm the best guide you can ask for!". Jason hurriedly thanked her before the two started to head to Gracie's house. It was on the other side of the village, so as they walked through, Gracie introduced Jason to anyone outside. Elves, Pixies, and a few people who looked like their hair or other parts were made of different elements. The first one of these kinds of people he saw was a young man. He had flaming hair; however, the flames didn't reach too high, instead acting as the individual pieces of his hair falling back to his head. This man was working in a forge a bit off the main path, so Gracie didn't bother introducing him. Still, Jason decided to ask about that kind of person, also that guy in particular. He couldn't put his finger on it, but he wanted to know what he was making. Plus, for the brief time, Jason got to see the dude, he found it funny how the fire hair was moving around on the guy's head.

Once they reached Gracie's house, Jason was visibly shocked. Her house wasn't anything too special except the size of an average log cabin. Gracie was tiny, so Jason wasn't expecting much when she said he could sleep there. Gracie seemed to have many other guests over and Jason assumed her house was built for the guest's size, not hers. Jason shrugged as they entered before asking Gracie about the people with weird hair. Gracie laughed before replying, "You seriously don't know? Those are the elementals. There is literally one everywhere you go!" Gracie's concern grew a bit more as it was clear something was wrong with Jason "do you remember anything?" Jason could only shake his head in response. He didn't, in fact, know anything about his current situation. He figured he'd need a rundown on races, Geography, Laws, and all the other basic things of this world, so he simply asked Gracie to update him on such things. He made it appear that he couldn't remember anything to try and ward off suspicion. It worked a little, and she flew across the room to grab a book. "Ok then, well, this will be the best to explain this then." Once she got back, the book was visibly a children's book. It had pictures of what looked like Gods, Humans, Dragons, Elves, Pixes, Elementals, and a couple more that Jason couldn't recognize. "Are these all on this planet!" Jason exclaimed, worried that some lousy god or dragon might come and hurt or kill them. "Just read it" Gracie threw the book in his lap before flying off to another room. Jason didn't hesitate due to his curiosity. The books' contents appeared to be pictures of planets and their races, explaining that the gods separated the races that weren't related into different worlds. It also explained that the gods implemented what that world calls the system. The book ends with it telling about how the other worlds need to bring forth the "Hero of the World" during the Reckoning. Jason wasn't sure what the Reckoning was because the book had no further explanation; however, it did explain that the gods, for the worlds to provide their "Hero," blessed all the inhabitants with systems and quests. Not all of these gods were good. Some tried to kill each race by sending monsters or corrupting their souls to enslave them.

Jason had the gist of what the children's book was trying to tell him, but he still was wondering about a couple of things. What is this system the gods blessed the races with? What is the Reckoning? And how do I survive here if the monsters and gods try to kill me? Jason set the book back in his lap, thinking about these things and trying to wait for Gracie to return. After a bit, she returned holding a tray with what appeared to be some sort of meat, honey, water, and a few weird-looking vegetables. Even the honey looked a bit strange as it was more golden and sparkly than usual. "I just finished eating. Here's yours," Gracie plopped the tray onto the table in front of Jason. He wondered how she could carry that being so small but didn't ask questions before digging into the meal. He hadn't realized how hungry he'd become. Also, to top it off, the food tasted better than anything he had back in his old life. Gracie was happy to see him enjoying the food. Eventually, Jason finished so he put down the tray and began asking her his questions. "What is this Reckoning thing?" He asks first, seeming to be the most dangerous. "Dunno, it is said that those legends are all true, and there is backing for It; however, there is nothing that explains the Reckoning other than the mention" She shrugged as Jason hurriedly asked his next question. "Ok then, what is this system thing?" At this, Gracie giggled again. She knew he didn't know but found the lack of the most basic information funny. "Just say status, and it should appear. You also have the option to open a market and friends list. Also, other tabs can be open for you depending on your rankings, privileges, and class. However, it is rare nowadays for anyone to get any good rankings or privileges due to the world being safer with less fighting," Gracie replied to his question seriously. Jason first doubted the book, but a screen flashed before his eyes as soon as he said status.
