The next day Shaun woke up in the sofa, he was waiting for his mother before he fell asleep and before he realized it was morning.
"Why am I here?" he got up murmuring and went to his mother's room but the room was empty. His face was mysteriously looking at her bed. He was curious and very worried as it was the first time his mother did something like this. But he was already late for school so he got ready and went out. He kept calling his mom the entire way to school and she didn't answer.
He parked his car and went out to check where his class was. As he was walking he was still trying to reach his mom and he bumped into someone. His phone slipped out of his hand and the girl who bumped him missed her step and stepped on his phone.
"Are you serious?" he glared to see who was the person but to his surprise Jane was standing right in front of him. He panicked at the sight but he quickly said, "Sorry, I was focused on my phone I didn't see you coming." He picked up her books and his phone with its newly formed cracks on the screen. James caught up to his sister only to find Shaun holding her books.
"What happened?" James asked.
But Shaun just handed her the books and left without saying a word to James.
"What is wrong with him?" James was baffled.
"I broke his phone, it must be expensive. What do I do?" Jane asked her brother looking at him with her puppy eyes.
James just left her because he would definitely end up giving her money if she continues begging.
Jane and James were on their second year of college on the same department. Jane's interest in computer science started when she was young so she studied really hard to get into the university she wanted. Contrary to his sister, James wasn't really interested in anything but he was one of the best students in his high school so he just chose whatever. They entered to their class aligned after one another. And Selina was waiving her hand to Jane as she came in before her friend but Jane's eyes were fixed on Shaun. She thought and he just happens to be here of all the classes.
James nudged his sister to take a sit and he went straight to Shaun.
"Hi Shaun."
"Hi"
"Do you always answer like that?" James was frustrated because he wanted to get close to Shaun.
"Mostly."
"Are you waiting for a phone call?"
"Kind of."
"I heard my sister broke your phone."
"No. I was the one at fault you don't have to worry about that."
James was very amused by Shaun's response.
It was already lunch time when James dragged Shaun to eat together. But the main reason he didn't adamantly refuse was the thought of Jane joining them. His wish came true Jane was sitting right in front him at the same table. But as happy as he was he was too occupied by his mother's whereabouts to care about anyone on the table.
"Sorry about earlier, your phone." Jane casually brought it up.
"It's okay, you don't have to mind." He cut the conversation short.
"I should pay for it. It's my fault after all." Jane was baffled by his response and little upset for not giving her attention. As she was about to continue talking Shaun got a phone call and he got up quickly saying, "Excuse me."
Jane was very irritated by his behavior, James and Selina were looking at her as if they were watching drama.
"What?" she lashed out on them. And they both looked away from her.
And Shaun who went out answered his phone, "Mom, where the hell are you? I haven't been able to reach you all day." He was very angry.
"Were you worried, after all you are the only one I have."
"Are you kidding? Where are you?"
"Just got home. Can we talk later, I am so tired."
"Okay." He answered in grumpy voice but he thought he should give her some time so he hung up.
He turned around just to find Jane standing there.
"Give me your phone, I hate to be in debt." She took his phone number and went away before he realized what happened.
