Everything was working out so far. Silvia was able to sublet her apartment and get time off from work. The week had flown by and in one more her friend Ashley would be coming out. She picked up some groceries before driving back out to the cabin. Becky was waiting by her car holding a vanilla envelope as she pulled up. "Ms. Clark, here are the papers I told you about. There is also a separate letter when you're ready to read it." Becky said handing it over. "A letter? That wasn't mentioned before." Silvia asked. "Yes well, it was his wishes you only receive it if you accepted the cabin. Good luck!" Becky yelled as she jumped into her car. It was strange how eager she was to leave.
The keys turned easily in the lock and the door opened. She placed the envelope on the kitchen counter with them. Silvia heard nails tapping on the floor and a little whine behind her. There was a small grey puppy sitting there. "Where did you come from? I didn't bring any dog food." She said and it tilted it's head in response. Was it trapped here all week? She was sure it wasn't here before. It whined once more before making it's way to the front door and scratched. Well, it seemed to be house trained. It looked at her once more as she opened the door and went back to the kitchen after it went out. There was a separate envelope with her name hand written on the front. She nervously stared at it for awhile. "Might as well find out what it says." She thought as she opened it. " My dearest Silvia, What a poor excuse I am for leaving a letter instead of talking to you in person but sometimes talking isn't an option. I hope this finds you in good health. You undoubtedly found Everest. He's young but makes a good companion. He pretty much takes care of himself but if you ever can't find something just ask him. You probably wonder where I've been all these years. The answer is here. This was my home. Truth be told, I didn't know you existed until two years ago. I became ill and figured it best if I stayed away. I still wanted to leave you something though and am glad you took it. If anyone asks it's important you say you bought my cabin. There's so much about the world you don't understand and if others find out you're my blood you could be in danger. I'm sorry I can't say more. I love you though I never met you. Always and Forever, Ryder." At least it answered some of her questions but also left more in place. Was her father a bad person? Why would she be in danger? Was it a mistake to come out here? Her thoughts were interrupted by another scratch at the door. The pup sauntered in as she opened it. "Everest huh?" She asked and it barked back in response. She went back to the kitchen to put away her groceries and start dinner. The puppy curled up on the rug in the living room to take a nap.
