It was dark when Silvia heard scratching at the door. Everest came walking in and curled up on the carpet with his tail over his snout. "Where have you been all day?" She asked but he just huffed in response. "Am I suppose to fix dinner for you too or do you eat while you're out?" With this he looked up at her and stretched. He made his way to the bathroom when she heard his voice around the corner, "Actually, I'd love something but I'm going to take a shower first." She pulled cornbread out of the oven and heard the shower running. "I think I met your brothers today!" She spoke up. The door opened and he popped his soapy head out. "I smelled them...What did they want?" He asked. "They wanted you to come home." She shrugged. He then slammed the door in her face but she heard him yell, "Did you tell them I was here?" "Sort of...I told them I had a puppy I had found." She responded. The door flew open and Everest snapped, "You shouldn't have!" He was dressed now and pushed past her. "You just said you smelled them so, they probably smelled you too!" She yelled and Everest squinted his eyes at her. "You're right! Good thinking then!" He smiled and shoved a piece of cornbread into his mouth. Food sprinkled out as he asked, "Anything else?" "They wanted to know my name and how I got this place. I told them I bought it and only gave them my last name. Don't talk with you mouth full!" She snapped. He quickly swallowed and muffled a laugh, "The less they know the better." "So, what kind of danger am I in?" She asked. "Not much as long as they think you're human." He winked. "And what if they don't? What happened to Emma?" She asked and Everest's eyes grew large. "Emma was a tragedy... She was human... Like I said before only half bloods can be turned... Usually on their sixteenth birthday by their fathers...You're not sixteen and our father is dead so, I'm suppose to turn you. Then you'll be either courted or hunted..." He paused grabbing a drink, "If there's no mating pull you are hunted by all eligible males for claiming rights." "I'm not sure I understand... Am I property? What was my mother?" She shrieked with anger rising as Everest slowly nodded his head. "If it's alright, I don't want to talk about this anymore. Besides, I'll be in more danger if they find out." He said wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "What do you mean?" Silvia asked. "There's no laws to keep you from killing every guy that tries to claim you...The punishment is death for not turning any half blooded female." He said looking down to the floor. "What was dad thinking bringing me here?" She asked. "If they found out you existed I'd be put to death no matter what. This way we have a choice...but if you got sick from Emma's bite I would've had to turn you anyways." He shrugged. "If Emma was a human what did it matter?" She asked. "Turning is done with a bite...she was in transition. She could have started it in you but because she was sick it wouldn't work right. Foaming is a sign of a human...Fever is a sign of a wolf. I would've had to finish what she started or you would be in constant pain." He said with a grim smile. He finished eating then looked at her, "I'm going home for a while when the sun comes up. Maybe my brothers won't come around if I do. I'll come back after a few days."
