Chapter 9 - Another Night

The sun set but Silvia's nerves wouldn't calm down. Some vacation this turned out to be. She made herself some warm tea and sat in the living room. She wanted to light the fireplace but didn't know how. Shouldn't she make sure the chimney was clear first? She decided to turn on the television and curled up with a blanket. The days were warm but when it got dark there was a chill in the air. The news flashed a picture of Emma, "Animal attack of a local girl resulted in her death. She has been identified as Emma Smith by her family and there will be a celebration of life this weekend. The community has started a fund to pay respects..." Silvia turned the TV off and as soon as she did she heard howling. It seemed to be more than one but off in the distance. Still sending a shiver up her spine. She peered out the window and had her voice get caught in her throat. Through the dark a pair of silver eyes gleamed and she couldn't look away. It was like walking on a cloud. She was drawn in and felt swallowed by their intensity. Her heart pounded as they seemed to be getting closer. Fear clenched her throat but something else as well...Almost excitement. Then the howls erupted again and the eyes disappeared. She kept looking almost missing their gaze. What was wrong with her? It had to have been a werewolf. She turned off the lights and heard some more howls as she slowly made her way to the bedroom. She looked out the window again only to see the stars shining brightly. That was a sight she didn't get in the city. It was beautiful really as the moon beamed. It was a full moon and Silvia looked at it almost in awe. Then looking down she noticed the eyes were back. Could they see her? They just stared at each other as she slowly backed away from the window and towards her bed. Again she couldn't look away but they didn't seem to be moving closer this time. They were just watching and she felt an odd sense of peace. Goosebumps traveled the length of her body and there seemed to be a low hum in her mind. They held eye contact until her eyes drifted to sleep. Her mind was saying she shouldn't but she was exhausted. It was like a lullaby being played just for her and oddly enough she slept well that night. It was actually the best she slept in a long time.
