Chapter 5 - The Status System: First Excursion

Before even a single word was spoken, the sight of multiple mana orbs being formed told Cypher all he needed to know; his fatigue was still a detriment, but it would stop him. There were eight total men, four behind Gallow and Gallow, respectively. Cypher shot up with Gallow doing the same mana orbs dispurses and shoot into creation; as Cypher destroys all the mana orbs behind Gallow, the men had generated manifesting eight of his own. Before they could realize they had lost the mana orbs, the generated Cypher began configuring them to hold his rage.

Gallow, before Cypher even stood, had created four mana orbs and infused them with his rage; they did not turn blue nor red but vibrant ivory white easily distinguishable from the natural color of unfocused mana. As Cypher stood, multiple loud booms erupted behind Gallow, telling him he had nothing to fear. Taking control of the mana orbs, he creates Gallow configure them to mimic lighting and send his veins in an angry fury as he holds up his arm, sending out his mana lighting.

Anna sat at her lunch table, annoyed from the constant praise of the men and even some females around her; she'd noticed for the first time Cypher was actually here. Though she thought it strange that he held his head the entire time he was in here, and even more so that he was sitting at Gallows table. No one dared sit next to him. He had made a name for himself by insulting everyone around him that annoyed him. And it seemed he didn't mind Cypher's visit since he just sat down and started eating his food. Anna thought of taking a page from his book and trying her luck at it, but she knew she could never.

Anna's attention was focused on a female that sat down at Gallow's table, Gallow looked at her, and she seemed to give a broad smile and start talking to him. She saw Gallow's lips mouth off a few words, and the female's entire demeanor changed, and she just sat there staring at the table with a hurt grin. Anna snickered to herself until moments later; she saw a man walk towards Gallow's table and start talking to the female; less than a few seconds later, Cypher began to stir. He seemed to pick his head up and look around as if he didn't know where he was, and for whatever reason, this made Anna laugh.

The man generates mana orbs and places a poison status effect within them, changing their colors to mimic other status effects. Anna sighed, remembering when someone tried the same tactic on her; she hated the idea that someone could fall for it. Studying the facial expressions at the table, Cypher didn't seem to like the false showing. Cypher appeared to throw an insult at the man who responded in kind, and without missing a beat, Gallow seemed to strike out at the man as well, who at Gallow's words seemed to back down, leaving the table.

Cypher seemed to lower his head, and Gallow went back to eating; the women seemed happy to have the man leave her alone. Anna thought the conflict was over until she noticed the man walk over to two tables and relay some message, followed by everyone at the tables walking toward Gallow and Cypher. The group circles around the table and each seemed to generate two or three mana orbs. Anna felt fear and worry begin to set in as everyone at the table noticed what was going on and most of the dining hall. Anna recognized the two legions, The black and red dawns, respectively; they were nothing but a group of none exalteds who decided not to play by the pre-academy rule and got ostracised by the non-exalteds leader, Cloth.

Anna and the rest of the dining hall watched as within seconds of the dawn's mana orbs were being generated, Cypher shot up. Over rod, all of them that were positioned behind Gallow and in the same breath, Gallow seemed the generate three mana orbs before any of the dawns could create one. The mana orbs Gallow spawned burst into white lighting, a mana attack, that each struck one of the mana orbs the men had made. Anna was confused at the action until white static shot out from the his initial spheres, bouncing between their neighbors, eventually dismantling them all.

Anna has never seen mana in use, and for a good reason, the attack form was rarer than an exaltation. She was shocked that not only did Gallow have that but a mythical exalted status. She, like everyone else, thought about cheering when they saw the attack orbs laid to waste, but then what Cypher and Gallow did next was just too much for cheers to be appropriate. Cypher's existing mana orbs grew to a deeply saturated blue with black veins running along with the static-filled spheres, his hand shot out, and in a flash, the neck of one of the men was hit with a blast of necrotic lighting. The man began to fall with a spray of burnt or burning blood flying in the air, but before he even got halfway to the ground

The man's head was nearly taken clean off; the man began to fall with a spray of burnt or burning blood flying in the air. And before he even got halfway to the ground, following the attack, Cypher used his other orbs to perform the same action. Before even he could let off his next shot, Gallow took one of his own, sending a shot of mana lighting through a man's chest. The damage was terrible, there was a small hole about the size of a penny through the man's chest, but the burns were horrid. Bubbling and charred flesh were on the man's chest and back.

Everyone in the dining remained quiet; no one dared make a sound. The other men finally managed to get up their mana shield and even managed to use low-level nullification to break four of Cypher's six orbs. But none attacked; they didn't even have the chance to before Cypher and Gallow jumped on two of the men knocking them to the ground. Gallow held out an open palm, and Cypher threw a clenched fist at his target's head. Both motions followed with a flash of lighting and screams. Both men had shields up, so the damage was dispersed throughout their entire body instead of one spot; the pain was spread through their teeth, their eyes, their toes, anything and everything that could fill pain would have to deal with the effects of those attacks. It was the only method to continue fighting, but the men didn't get up after those attacks.

At that point, Anna watched, conflicted, as the two of them took out four men in less than a minute; she almost began hoping the others would be able to stop the two of them. She watched as they both generated orbs and began to prepare for the final section of the fight; she almost thanked god that they would eventually fight back. Before anything aggressive happened, two of the men used mana orbs to heal the fatally wounded quickly; Anna knowing every aspect of healing, knew they could be saved if they weren't already dead. The way healing worked allowed even the most fatal wound to be healed if it wasn't too late because even something shocking could be turned into the disgusting slimy fluid produced over the afflicted area. The substance held everything from the person's wound, infection, trauma, heat, cold, anything. The only problem with it is that it's difficult to remove from the body.

Anna watched as the two attacks faced off with Cypher and Gallow, that was until her attention was taken away by a woman who had regained her voice and learned she could scream. Her action set off a chain of cries from men and women as the dining hall began to flood outwards of the terrified. In the chaos, Anna sat still, watching the pending duel. At that moment, she felt her table shift, causing her to turn her head; sitting next to her was a smiling gambler. Cain showed his teeth in a broad smile, "And how do you do, Anna?"
