Chapter 57 - Of Danes and Saxons

All Danes and Saxons had their views on the gods they serve, and they were all different from each other. They even hated each other because of the various religions and beliefs they had; Saxons believed in only one god, the Danes believed in all of the Norse gods. Katherine walks back to her throne next to her husband, and they both take a good look at Delphine and Simon. The two demon hunters had white skin, and they both never believed in the gods the nordic people worshipped. They carried on with whatever else the two earls had in mind to say to them as the guards were still behind the exit doors.

"Wife, you've made yourself clear. Quite a performance, now it's my turn," Einar said. He gets up from his throne and begins to walk towards Delphine to say some things to her, as Simon watched on.

"How can I help you, your majesty," Delphine said.

"You can help me by helping Osbert out by whatever speech you got rehearsed and have him return to me with whatever it is you desire," Einar said.

"As long as I'm here, I'll do whatever you say," she said. The earl walks around Delphine and Simon to see what it is they are hiding from his face, and it turns out that they do not have anything secretive to show.

"You seem like a charming lady. If my men were careful enough, they would have their way with you," he said.

"I didn't come here to be some pet to your men. I've come here for a much larger reason," Delphine said.

"Again, if you got any news to say to me, report it to Osbert so that he can tell it to me," Einar said.

"Why don't you want me to report it to you myself?"

"Because you're a stranger," Katherine said.

Then Einar answered and spoke to Delphine, saying, "Because you're new around here. And I have to be able to know you first and see if I can trust you. You may be what they say you are, but if you're going to stay here with your friend and comrade, you still have rules to follow. You do know what rules are, don't you? Until we can develop some sort of relationship, you will do as you're told. If you need a place to stay, try out one of the taverns. I'm sure they got plenty of rooms for you two."

Then, Osbert gets in front of Delphine and Simon and looks at them; this was a sign of telling them that they are done speaking with the earl, for now. His very appearance showed bravery and strength to those who wish to test his might, and his face spoke a thousand words.

"We'll meet again, earl," Delphine said. She then followed Osbert out from the palace, and the guards were done being behind the doors as they watched the demon hunters leave.

The guards went back to their duties as Einar and Katherine continued to sit with each other. Einar saw that his wife always acted severe and suspicious about certain things that may or may not be her concern.

"Well, she seems formidable. Also, it's as if she knew she had to come here," Einar said.

"That knight cannot be trusted. You know it, and I know it," Katherine said.

"That may be, but they may be our chance of defending this city against a higher threat. Even if they don't seem trustworthy, I still sense something inside of them," he said.

"Einar, look at how they have all appeared before us. Imagine what would happen if they plot against us. Think about all of the lives that would put in danger because of them."

"No. Such an event will never happen. They would never do such a dishonorable thing. She killed a giant demon from a Saxon sanctuary and saved countless lives. Her will and honor are absolute, and she is no longer any stranger. She is a knight who walks in the night and hunts down the night creatures."

Then, he said nothing more to his wife and began thinking about other things, and he leaves the throne room and goes someplace else in the palace. His wife never agreed with certain things that he would say to another person; the two demon hunters may be considered heroes, but not in her eyes. In her eyes, they are just people who wander into cities and villages that they are not welcomed at. There has always been an alternative to those who have a reason for coming to a nordic town and staying for the night. Einar may be a strong warrior and leader, but he had a soft spot for those who fought with the strength of many men.

Meanwhile, Delphine and Simon were still following Osbert, and he led them to a large tavern with many rooms for people to rent. They were starting to have a large habit of finding either a bar or an inn to stay at and rest.

"Alright, since you're our new guests in this city, I need to know the truth on why you're here," Osbert said. Simon tried to think of something to say, but he knew that Delphine told him that she would do all the talking.

"We are here because we need to go to that mountain over there. I believe that there is something in there that calls for me," Delphine said. Osbert became surprised, and those words opened his mouth; the misty mountains is quite clearly a dangerous place to visit.

"Delphine, what you're asking for is insane. Impossible. Don't you know what you're even in for if you go inside that place?" He asked.

"I have hunted down many creatures besides demons. If I go towards that mist, I'll draw my sword against whatever comes my way," Delphine said.

"I'm sure you will. But, I'm saying if you go inside the mountain, there is an ancient creature beyond all recognition," Einar said.

"And what am I to expect when I get inside?"

"Inside that mountain is a dragon. But not just a dragon... an elder dragon. There is also a strong mortal who takes care of the dragon and wields a sword that can summon a great army. It's absolute nightmarish once you start thinking about it. We thought that all dragons have gone extinct. It turns out that there is one who still lives and draws breath next to its master."

Osbert tries to speak to them silently because he did not want to cause a scene as the day goes on. He goes into such great detail about the elder dragon, but he had to keep his voice down so that nobody else can hear about the giant creature.

"Is there a trail which leads to the mountain. How do I get inside?" Delphine asked.

Then, Osbert answered and said to her, "There isn't that much to tell you on how to get there. Just follow the trail, which will take you there. But know this, those who walked into that mist never returned. Now, if there's nothing else you can tell me, I'll go ahead and return to Earl Einar."

"I don't have any more to say. I have all the information I need," she said.

"Well, enjoy your visit at Bebbanburg."

Then, he turns around and walks back to the palace to inform Einar about what Delphine and Simon are going to do. The people gave a good stare at the earl's brother, and they knew not to waste his time during the day. Then, Delphine looks at the tavern and hears a bunch of men celebrating and drinking ale while listening to music. The music they listened to was entirely from the Viking race; the songs were not in English, and they were very long songs that could last more than six minutes.

"Now what?" Simon asked.

"I dunno. I got lots of coins from Gisbourne. Let's rent a room for the two of us," Delphine answered. Then, she led the way to the tavern, and Simon followed her, and he looked at some of the people who were staring at him.

He was pretty silent the whole time he was with Delphine in Bebbanburg, but he still kept his mind straight. Delphine kept the door open and allowed Simon to go inside first, and she closes the door behind her as she goes inside. As they enter the tavern, they were greeted with many men drinking wine and speaking with each other about things that have been occurring lately. They did not want to be so easily recognized by the men who were talking about certain things.

Simon continued to stay behind Delphine as he stared at the nordic men doing things and drinking either wine or ale. Like Delphine, he did not have any time to sit with them and discuss ideas about him and listen to some music.
