Chereads / Delphine of Moria / Chapter 61 - The Difficult Trail

Chapter 61 - The Difficult Trail

If they stayed inside of the mist much longer, there would be a high chance that Erron and Scarlet would return to continue taunting them. Delphine could tell that they were coming back, but she did not know the day nor the hour. Eventually, she would have to kill them and send them back to their maker; she will need to be up to the challenge of taking their heads. It would use up a lot of her energy and stability to raise her swords against the one who is just as powerful as she is. Delphine and Simon proceeded to run towards the moonlit night as they could no longer see much of the mist.

Then, they made it out of the giant fog and saw the mountains to be much bigger than they thought it would be. The hill itself was about thirty thousand feet tall, and the trail itself led straight to the place's bottom point. There were steps within the path that made it easier for them to walk down since there was no way for them to climb up the mountain. Then, Delphine walked on as Simon moved behind her since he did not want to be pushed down. It was quite evident that the trail led to somewhere easy to tread, but challenging to find out how they should escape it if they need to get out.

"Simon, be careful with this trail," Delphine said.

"Yeah, tell me about it. It's such a long way down," Simon said.

"Indeed. That's why I need you to be behind me while on this trail," she said.

"There's going to be a bunch of wolves and other beasts. Do you think they have the guts actually to try to eat us?"

"They're all wild animals, Simon. What makes you think they're not going to try and jump on us? They won't do that if we try to attack them. Of course, if there are demons abroad, then be on your guard."

"I don't know if I ever told you this, but why do you wear black armor? Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I'm generally curious."

Delphine knew Simon was far too curious to be thinking about the armor that she is wearing. She could go on for a good hour as to why she wears ebony armor and wields an ebony greatsword when she goes into an onslaught.

Then Delphine answered and said to him, "Well, I wear this armor, because it's much easier to walk in the shadows and harder for the demons to see who is coming for them. It only works for those who have a large amount of strength, durability, and stability. Not that I became so powerful by default, but I wear it to protect me from many powerful creatures and tougher opponents. Some of the demons can be met head-on, but others can be taken down by stealth and if you're very quiet on your feet. But, since we're having this conversation, I want to know something about you. Are you enjoying these battles and onslaughts that we both find ourselves in?"

Then Simon answered and said to her, "I never really enjoyed much of the onslaughts against the demons. But, now that I feel much stronger than I used to be, it seems pretty easy for me to take them all on. It also depends on how tough the creatures are until I face them. Sometimes, it takes more than a single night for me to develop and adapt my skills are archery and swordplay. I'll probably enjoy it if the demons don't seem to enjoy it."

Simon did have a point for saying that to her, and he did enjoy hunting to the degree that would make him get much more durable. He was already strong enough to fight demons, which take some time to kill, but he still did not have the same strength as Delphine. Suddenly, Delphine saw a bunch of demons climbing up the cliff they were standing next to, and they were all ready to fight the demon hunters. The creatures refused to leave without a fight; they held onto their swords and axes as their eyes stared back at the ones who have been hunting them down for many years.

Delphine and Simon had their swords at the ready when they were staring at the ones who were sent to kill them. They all had a reason to avenge the deaths of their fallen comrades, and they were not afraid to sink their blades into the bodies of the demon hunters. Since it was already nighttime, the night creatures were already prepared to fight against Delphine and Simon. They mostly desired to kill the Ebony Knight because she was the one who killed more demons than Simon did. Delphine realized that she couldn't waste any more time just standing there and watching them come to her.

"Simon, try to keep up," Delphine said.

"Delphine?" Simon asked. She did not answer him because she already had her mind set on defeating the demons and going inside the gigantic mountain.

Delphine charged towards the night creatures and had her greatsword pointing at their bodies instead of waiting a single second. She then swung her sword at all sorts of directions and began killing every unique beast that held a weapon. She spins around with her sword so quickly that the demons did not have a chance at fighting back against her. Simon follows her and tries to cover his face from all of the dismembered body parts from all of the demons. Delphine has always been a relentless person in onslaughts, yet she would give her own life to protect Simon from the strongest of all the night creatures.

She made sure none of them expected mercy from the likes of her; she swings her blade at their heads, arms, and legs. Simon could not take a stab at any of the demons as Delphine killed all of them without showing any peace. She was not like the Wolf Queen when it came to changing things in the world. Lagertha could change almost anything, but she cannot change human nature nor the hearts of those who succumb to power. Before she even knew it, Delphine already killed the large group of demons and watched as most of the body parts were falling.

He stood there and watched as the blood and gore of the night creatures were either staining the floor or raining down in the sky. Simon then walks towards Delphine and starts walking over the big puddle of gore before him and only looked ahead. Delphine looks down at her blade and watches her reflection through the large stain of blood. She knew that there would be even more demons along the way and trying to stop her from reaching her destination. Simon looks at her and tries to think of something to say to her before they could walk any further, but it was hard to speak with her in the state she is in.

"Simon... come here," Delphine said. He walked to her and did not say anything until she looks at him, and he saw that she still had blood running from her hands.

"What is it, Delphine?" Simon asked.

"I need to know if you still trust me. For a long time, I've protected you against all the odds and all of those who would try to kill us," she said.

"You and I have given our lives to protect the people of this world. In the eyes of many people, you're a hero," he said.

"There will be more of those creatures along the way and more people to tempt us and stand in our way. But on our journey, you've shown that you can be stronger and more admirable than most knights and hunters."

"My purpose in life is exactly your purpose. To stand up and fight against the creatures of the night. Such has been the reason why I still live."

Delphine spoke to Simon about this because she wanted to make sure that he is strong enough to fight against much larger foes. The enemies they will be facing from here on out will be more different than what they are usually used to. Then, Delphine turns around and looks at the highest peak of the mountain from about twenty miles away. It would take her until midnight when she reaches the entrance, and she could not waste her time talking to him and not walking anywhere.

"We cannot stay here any longer. I'm not leaving this place until I get what I need," Delphine said.

"Let's keep going," Simon said. If Delphine needed to talk to him about something, she had to keep walking and talking at the same time.

The moon began to be full, and all the stars in the sky seem to disappear as another demonic presence started to appear.
