Chapter 59 - The Mountain Path

Delphine and Simon were already on the first floor of the tavern and waited by the counter for the tavern's owner. At this rate, there was not a lot of people sitting down because they were outside either going home or taking a walk. During this time, Delphine and Simon ate whatever was on the menu and drank their best wine the tavern could make. They always had ale and wine to drink for people who were ever interested in walking into the bar. They were eating dinner inside the tavern for about twenty minutes; they were filled and energized for the night.

Then, Delphine and Simon made sure that their swords were on their sides and began walking out of the tavern. Everyone who is in there spoke amongst themselves about the demon hunters and still wondered if they should trust those two. Delphine led the way out of the city and opened the two front doors, and she walked out onto the long road as Simon stays behind her. Osbert and the guards watched them leave and told them to keep the doors unlocked if they ever come back to the city. He knew that they might eventually come back, but only to speak words with either him or Einar.

On the brink of the evening sun, Delphine and Simon walked on the dark road that leads to the misty mountains. Truthfully, the hills were very dim and ancient; beyond the mist is the entrance to the gigantic mountains. Delphine led the way as Simon looked at the hills and the trail that leads to the entrance. She did exactly what Osbert told her to do, and she knew exactly what to do once she goes in front of the mist. She and Simon had no choice but to draw their swords and fight against the creatures guarding the place.

"Delphine, do you know exactly what you're gonna do?" Simon asked.

"Yes. I have the words from Osbert. He pretty much told us everything we need to know," Delphine answered.

"We just follow the trail and into the mountains. And we just kill whatever's in our way," he said.

"You catch on pretty quickly. It's something we'll have to get used to doing while on this journey. And when we get in there, well... I'll just tell you when we get there."

"Ah, there it is. The thing you usually say when there's danger before us. Indeed, I have not forgotten the things you commonly tell me."

"This time, the danger is more real than you'll ever know. This is not like one of the more common nights we both share. We are headed towards a far greater threat. I dunno if I should trust the fact that a dragon is waiting for us."

"You sure that a dragon lies inside there? And is it true that some guardian is protecting the dragon from strangers?"

Delphine was already not believing anything that is coming from the lips of the nordic people. She was not so restrained by the fact that the northerners would go out their way to try and convince her of this dragon.

"There haven't been any dragons for about a hundred years. I know dragons, and they don't live as long as some people seem to claim," Delphine said.

"I can see why you don't believe in their words. It might take a long time for them to convince someone like you," Simon said. Then, they both said nothing more as they were walking with each other towards the mountains.

They were both prepared to face the night creatures like all the other times, but not as ready for the dangers that await them. They held nothing back as they walked under the evening sun, and they did not look back at Bebbanburg to see if they forgot something. Commonly, Delphine feels her pockets and back pockets to see if she forgot something that she will be needing. She was always self-determined to do anything just so long as she stays alive on her journey. Delphine and Simon start to see that they were getting much closer to the mountains because they followed the long road.

If they did not do as Osbert told them to do, they would be aimlessly roaming around and likely find themselves in a trap. They put their trust in each other and kept moving forward as they remained awake to see how it all ends. It was not long for them to realize that they were close enough towards the mist; thankfully, it did not take as long as they thought it was going to take. During that time, the sun was already down, and the moon appeared above the sky, and they sensed a fabulous presence waiting for them.

"So, this is the place?" Simon asked.

"We have no other choice. We must go inside and fight everything that comes for us," Delphine answered.

"The feeling is more intense than I thought it was going to be. I know it's cold and all, but I get even more chills just by thinking about it," he said.

"Don't be afraid. You may not be able to cut through the mist, but we'll just have to walk slower than we usually do. If we run, we'll fall and die. Just keep holding your sword and stab whoever tries to kill us."

"If that's the case, what happens if I stab you without realizing?"

"You won't. That's why we must stick together when we're out here. If I do get dragged by something, just get back here as soon as you can. I'll just find my way out."

Delphine warned Simon of the many traps that might be set for them, and she would do even the most impossible things to have him be safe. But, those were things that would likely happen; she had it within herself that she will always protect the young hunter.

"That's a pretty dangerous way to live, Delphine. I know I do a lot of pretty dumb things, but not in a way that will make me choose how I should be in that situation," Simon said.

"Yeah... I know. That's why it's kinda my job to make sure you live to see tomorrow," Delphine said.

"Very well. I'm ready now. Let's hunt some demons," he said.

"That's the spirit. Now, remember, stay behind me."

Delphine was always worried about what would happen to Simon because he is not bound by wolves nor demons. She already told him how she unleashes her inner-demons and where it all comes from, but she never told him enough about herself. Eventually, she would have to say to him what her true nature is, and she will likely tell him what truly happened to herself. Delphine and Simon pulled out their swords and continued to stroll in the mist; they kept their wits to themselves as the night has just begun. The great fog is about five miles long and a thousand steps to get out of there.

Suddenly, Delphine and Simon begin to hear voices calling out to them, and they continued to stick together. But, these were not demonic shrieks nor creature noises; they were sounds that sounded oddly familiar to what they usually listen to. The sounds were the same as what Delphine and Simon sound like, but none of them knew how this was happening. As they walked, they began to hear their names being called from the horizon and still sounded exactly like their real voices. Delphine and Simon stood beside each other and held onto their weapons, and they all waited for some mysterious person to stand before them.

"Delphine... Delphine, the Ebony Knight," a dark female voice said.

"Who's there? Who are you?" She asked.

"Simon... Simon," a male voice said.

"Am I hallucinating? What's going on here?" Simon asked. Nobody could give him an answer, and he took a few steps forward to see if he could continue walking on the trail.

But, Delphine told him not to walk off all by himself; she did not want to waste the entire night just looking for him within the mist. Before any of them could say anything else, the dark male and female voices were coming back for them.

The voices continued speaking with Delphine and Simon, saying, "Your death is on its way. The day will come when you will all be cursed into the darkness. The demons will devour you. The Demon Wolf will once more rule the world! Your heads will be served as warning! Your fates have been sealed, and your souls are damned!"

The male and female voices sounded exactly like the two demon hunters, but it was things they would never let themselves say. They both continued to look into the horizon to walk on the trail leading out of the mist. Delphine and Simon tried anxiously to not succumb to the schemes of whoever is leading them into temptation.
