Chapter 12 - Chapter Twelve

I changed into some regular clothes given to me before leaving the hospital. It had been four days since I had woken up in the hospital. The doctors had run so many tests to figure out hay had happened and only discovered not only was I healthly but all my senses were much more highly advanced.

I could hear things I shouldn't be able to almost like a bat and vision like that of an eagle. I also had a sense of smell similar to a bear. I had become much more adept in all my senses and had no trouble doing things I couldn't before. I was more athletic as well which surprised everyone especially myself as I had never liked to exercise before. The thing that changed the most was my ability to sit still. I just could no longer sit still for long periods of time.

It seemed like I had become an apex being. My senses were at the highest alert and it took some trying to get used to. I didn't even need to sleep that much either. It was hard to get used to in only a few days but there was nothing wrong with me to hold me in the hospital so I needed to leave.

I left the hospital building after saying farewell to the doctors. I still had some tests being run but those tests would take more time. It was only a few blood tests looking for abnormalities. I knew it would take at least a week to get those test results in and since I had worked in a few hospitals as an ER doctor I knew what dangerous signs to look for.

The moment I stepped out of the hospital I saw General S.S. Howser standing outside. He waved me over when he saw me and I walked over. He had been visiting with me to learn more about the rebels revolting and the files I had given him. I had already told him all I knew but he kept bothering me for more information to the point I was just repeating myself and giving details of what the rebels looked like.

"Kanami, I'm glad you're ok and finally discharged." I nodded, "me too. So, what do you need help with?" "Well, I was hoping you could help with countering the rebel forces. I've heard your the best at strategic warfare"

I nodded once again before I stood thinking about it. I first thought about refusing but after I remembered the rebels had tortured innocent men and women it sparked my anger. I wanted to get justice for those people they killed.

"I'll help but, I want to be able to go in as well" Howser looked at me shocked, "go in? You mean you want to participate in the attack?"

I nodded affirmation, "yes, they need to pay for the innocent people they had dragged into this mess and killed." I saw Howser nod, "very well you may participate but you'll stay by my side during the whole time"

I nodded and was invited to go with him in his car. I got into the car and sat down next to him calmly. I then saw and felt the car pull out from the hospital driving away. I watched the surroundings outside the car as we drove through town. The town was fairly empty of others.

I figured this was due to military evacuation orders to keep people safe and away from the rebels. It was a good move especially since I knew what the rebels were capable of. I had been told the rebels had taken over the downtown part of San Francisco and barricaded themselves in demanding to become their own sovereign nation.

Of course no one was going to agree due to them attacking the innocent people around. And the rest of the country who heard about this were angry and wanted justice. The country united against these people who acted like terrorists bent on destroying the lives of the innocents.

The revolters had planned their attack to the point that they blew up several tall buildings around the area they claimed killing thousands of innocent men and women. This was a point unacceptable to the country and now the country was united against these rebels.

The rebels had made the mistake of taking innocent lives and using hostages like myself when they first started their attack. This mistake caused them to burn any hope of a peaceful revolt as now the military was sent in with the citizens backing the decision to put an end to this revolt.

It was rare anymore to get all the citizens of the country to join together against a common enemy such as the rebels but they had. The rebels had crossed the line by attacking innocent people. And this also led to an increase of people joining the military. This hadn't happened since the last world war when to protect our country and citizens the country had to join together to fight.

I shook my mind clear of my past memories as we came to a stop finally reaching our base camp. Camp green was located directly on the frontlines and saw the most battles. This also meant they had the most soldiers coming and going on a daily basis. It also meant there were more patrols coming and going although we had many technical devices to help.

I, myself would rather do the work myself but there were things these devices could see I couldn't. Although, I can see and hear things normal people can't but these devices are helpful for early attack notifications but there's a device to counter it as well. So, all in all, it is a battle to see who has the best technology along with who has the best weapons and most numbers.

This led to mostly gorilla tactics and probes. So most often soldiers were just waiting for attacks or doing the attacking themselves. I knew for myself I'd be in most attacks and rise in the ranks swiftly due to my future successes. I honestly could care less if I moved up in rank or not. I wanted nothing to do with this stupid war. I had no choice though.

I got out of the humvee with the others and looked around the camp. It was mostly just some temporary tents and an outside cafeteria. It was a nice camp but one thing I disliked was the fact we had several trees on one side of the camp and a rock hill in the distance on the other side. It was a great place to get ambushed although it was a nice spot to hide from prying eyes.

I looked to the others as they stretched out seeming much more relaxed than me. I could understand why they were relaxed but at the same time I could see all the potential dangers. I took a deep breath and stretched out my stiff muscles while looking around. The camp was nice given how busy it was but that didn't bother me at the moment. It meant there were more eyes to keep watch out.

I looked to Captain Sean who had gone over to tell his men to get some rest and talk to my brother about our lodgings. It seemed Captain Sean was actually in charge of this camp. He had gone to the base before to pick up some documents and pick us up. I decided he was a good man since he had actually decided to drive us himself and talk to us.

The man wasn't as strict as most commanders I'd heard about. Although, since I joined the military I had yet to meet a strict commander. I had met a few strict soldiers but since I joined there were not as many as I had heard about. I mostly met carefree men and women who didn't care much for being strict.

Of course, I had only met seasoned soldiers and no newly joined soldiers. This probably had to do with the attitudes and strictness of the commanders and soldiers I had met. They knew what to do and got it done properly rather than goof off and so this gave them time to relax some.
