I followed the others as we were led to a tent where we would be set up in. I looked around inside the tent after I stepped inside. After a moment I went over to the bunk closest to the entrance and sat on the bottom bed. Jamie went over to me and put her stuff on the top bunk.
There was only enough room and beds for the twelve of us including Togami. It seemed I was bunking with Jamie now. I didn't mind who I bunked with but this was probably for the best for the two girls in the squad to bunk together.
I nodded to her before looking over to captain Sean and Togami as they talked. Sean was apologizing for the lack of space and having to put Togami in the same tent as us. Togami on the other hand didn't seem to mind it saying it would help him to get to know us better.
Of course as I knew Togami he was only wanting to keep us in line. Which didn't bother me as I really didn't care for this war or being in the military. Although, I did have concerns about the others lack of structure which I figured came from the fact all of them were veteran soldiers who were recently pushed into the same squad.
Normally with most of their ranking they would at the least be leaders of their own squads but instead they were all put into the same squad. With this thought I wanted to find out why. I looked at Jamie who was looking at Togami and Sean and asked.
"You're a staff Sergeant, Jamie so why were you put in this squad and aren't in charge of your own squad?" Jamie looked at me surprised before chuckling as she answered, "oh that because like everyone else here has outstanding combat skills. Talking to the others we all at least have done significant things on a battlefield which either got us a metal or rank up."
I nodded, "so I guess that explains why this squad was made" Jamie asked, "what do you mean by that?" I spoke, "meaning this squad was made to be with the best fighters and have the best fighting prowess. We most likely are going to be used in many raids and attacks. We'll be having a tough time." Jamie blinking, "oh…"
I nodded softly before laying back on the bed thinking. This news meant I would be having a harder time than I originally thought. I really just wanted to go home but, as what to do now? With the knowledge I had learned about my father and my inability to sit still would it be best if I went back to my life as a fitness trainer?
I just didn't know at the moment. I did have many questions about my father but as was I wouldn't be able to find anything about him. Perhaps it was for the best, I was in the military right now so I could blow off some steam while doing some good for the country. I wasn't sure but I at least wasn't sitting around anymore letting me burn some energy.
I looked to the others before I stood and left the tent getting looks from Togami and Sean. A curious look from Sean and a 'you better not cause trouble' look for my brother. I looked around once outside the tent looking at all the facilities around. I could easily locate the medical tent from the people entering and exiting.
We no longer put signs by the tents to say what they were due to the danger of attacks directed at any important facility. Too many times had it turned bad for us so we just gave it up and had to remember which was which. I had no problem with this as it was easy enough for me to remember. Though for others it could be an issue for others who had bad memories for remembering where everything was but of course they could always ask others.
I walked around identifying the different tents and their uses. After a while I made my way to the boundary of the camp and looked around the area around the camp. After some time as I stood looking into the treed area and I could feel a gaze on me and I pretended not to notice as I tried to identify where it was coming for and after a while I could tell the gaze was coming from behind me.
I slowly started to walk to the other side of the camp where the hill was and looked around as if I didn't know I was being watched. The gaze seemed to be watching just me and not the rest of the camp and I wondered who could be watching me. I had already figured the person who was watching me wasn't in the camp as even after I moved to the other side of the camp and kept my back to the camp the gaze did not remain behind me.
This put me on high alert and subconsciously I tensed slightly. I then looked up at the hill once I made it to the opposite side of the camp and knew the gaze was coming from the hill. I scanned the hill but the moment I started, the gaze on me vanished. I frowned concerned and headed up the hill. I knew there were some soldiers on the hill to prevent ambush but the gaze was the same gaze that had watched me before.
I couldn't overlook this anymore as it could become a real threat to the camp and to myself as I still hadn't managed to catch even a glance of the person. Which was unusual for myself as before when I looked for who was looking at me, I managed to always at the least catch a glimpse of them. So, for one to avoid my notice I knew they could not be normal. Perhaps they were even like myself which would spell a disaster for the others.
I climbed the hill looking out over it for any kind of movement or anyone not meant to be there but found nothing suspicious. I went to the top of the hill and saw the few soldiers who sat guard just to the opposite side of the camp on the hill looking for trouble. I waved to them in greeting and spoke softly.
"Hi, sorry to bother you but you haven't seen anything strange have you? Anything out of the ordinary?" A man spoke up looking at her, "other than you there has been nothing strange. Why are you asking?" I spoke, "no reason just checking. I'm new in the camp so I just wanted to see what's going on." The man chuckled, "well we get nothing exciting happening this close to the camp yet so relax."
I nodded and waved at them before turning and leaving. I didn't want to worry the others as with the skills this person had even if they knew anything it wouldn't help them. As since this person had managed to get past them easily enough but hadn't attacked then they weren't going to do anything yet. They might just be scouting or looking to snipe the commanding officer of the camp. Thinking of this she headed back to the camp to find captain Sean.
I was half way down the hill when I could feel the gaze from before back on me. I spun and looked up at the hill but as before the gaze vanished and saw nothing. I bit my lip in frustration before continuing back to the camp picking up my pace. I went down the hill and felt the gaze watching me once again. I glanced back, eyes narrowed but continued into the camp and went looking for Captain Sean.
I walked through the camp looking for captain Sean while still feeling the gaze on me seeming to watch my every move. I then spotted Captain Sean walking past a tent. I walked over to him and pushed into the tent not caring for the looks of surprise from others. I glanced around the tent and saw a soldier swiftly cover himself seeing me. I didn't care and looked at Captain Sean who had a bewildered look on his face.
"Keep your head low and your signia off. We have eyes on the camp and I can't find them. They are good. Don't even bother telling the soldiers to look, it'd be pointless. If I can't find them they won't have a chance. They might be a sniper so tell all other officers to keep a low profile."
Captain Sean looked at me and spoke, "Private Kanami, it's not that I doubt you but are you sure?" I spoke my voice cold as grating steel, "Very. If I wasn't I wouldn't be telling you. I never make a move without being sure. Don't panic the camp, they don't seem interested in the others yet."
Captain Sean looked at me, "what do you mean?" I spoke, "their gaze has been on me the whole time since some time ago. I tried finding them but they are good, too good to be normal." Sean frowned, "why only watch you?" I paused, "I noticed them, They know it too and so if they try to kill anyone they might go for just me first as I'm the most dangerous in this camp.'
Sean looked at me, "I doubt you are the most dangerous here. If they go after anyone I'd be the commanding officer; me. They won't go after not a private like you." I looked at him, "I could easily kill everyone in this camp without getting a scratch. I am not a normal person. There is a reason I was thrown into my squad without even going to boot camp. I can wade into a bullet strune battlefield and walk away unharmed."
Captain Sean gulped, "r-really?" I nodded, "why do you think I was able to kill the leader of those rebel forces in 2072? It wasn't luck, it was skill." I turned to the soldier who was standing looking at them with some clothes covering his private area, "You spill any of which I just said to any other soldiers; I will tie you to a pole outside naked with a knot you'll only be able to cut your way out of."
I then stalked out of the tent and almost immediately felt the gaze of the person watching me from before on me once again. I looked to the hill where the gaze was coming from but like before the gaze vanished when looking to the hill. This was starting to put me in a bad mood even as I started back to the tent I was staying in. I entered the tent swiftly and looked at the others before going to my brother.
"Togami, We've got eyes on the camp the same eyes as before. I can't find them. So keep your head low and keep your insignia off. Same goes for everyone else here." Togami blinked, "what? They followed us here?" I nodded, "apparently though so far with what I've noticed they seem only increased in me. It might be because I noticed them watching me before. They might be planning to try and get rid of a threat like me."
Togami blinked before nodding, "Be careful then." I nodded, "I will be but you also they might be another person out there sniping at us or not. I already warned Captain Sean so be on guard."
I saw Togami nod and looked to the others before leaving the tent again planning to sit and look for the person whose gaze had been on me. Once again the moment I left the tent the gaze was on me. I headed to the edge of the camp where the hill was and sat down in the shade looking up at the hill looking for the owner of the gaze. As I looked the gaze had vanished but every few moments I could feel the gaze on me before it vanished again.
With how things were going it was looking to be a waiting game for who would break first. As since I was hunting for the owner of the gaze I was able to sit there looking for many hours. Even as night fell I remained put watching. I could be very patient but neither of us had moved for several hours already.
