I went into a building and glanced around seeing it was a cafeteria. I nodded slightly and looked to Togami and the others who had followed me. I could tell they were all on high alert after what I had said.
The men who had originally walked over to greet them were looking at me with tense gazes. I glanced over at everyone who filled me inside and those in the cafeteria already.
"We won't be seen from in here." Togami asked, "you catch sight of our watcher?" I shook my head, "not even a shadow. We aren't dealing with a normal person. More likely it's someone like myself"
Togami nodded softly. I had noticed Togami had lost his original skepticism since our last mission. This was a good thing as to prevent more damage and have better results.
I looked at the men who had originally walked over when we landed. The men looked to be in charge of the base and were unfamiliar with what had happened. One of the men I noticed was a lieutenant colonel. I looked at him and asked.
"Who are you, lieutenant Colonel?" "I am Lieutenant Colonel, Nick. I was instructed to tell you, you'll be going to your stationed base camp tomorrow morning and to find you a place to sleep for the night."
I nodded and looked to Togami. I didn't want to deal with such things and was hinting him to do what he does best. I may have good senses and am good at killing but since the accident I did not have good people skills. Although, I never really had good people skills to begin with. I could get away with dealing with people but it wasn't my favorite thing to do so, if I could I'd leave it to others.
I ignored the others as I stood thinking about the set of eyes I had felt watching us. It wasn't the first time I had felt eyes on us but I had been able to catch at least a shadow of the person watching but this time I had seen nothing nor gotten any idea where that person was hiding. This had never happened before which befuddled me some but also put me on high alert. Whoever had been watching us had to have been at least the same strength as me or stronger.
I snapped out of my thoughts as lieutenant colonel Nick led us out of the cafeteria. I followed looking around the surrounding base for any signs of being watched or any creature out and about. I only managed to catch sight of some birds and nothing else. This raised many questions in my mind about who had been watching us earlier.
I followed the others as we were led into an empty tent where we could spend the night in, before we set off for our stationed base camp. I went and sat on a bed near the entrance to the tent and looked to the others as they chose a bed to sleep on for the night. It was already getting dark outside the tent and watched as Togami and lieutenant colonel Nick were talking for a while before Nick left.
I lay down on the bed on my back closing my eyes thinking. I wanted to know who was it who had the skills to avoid my detection after I sensed their gaze. I was also very curious to know if they had any connections to my unknown father. It might even be possible that person had been my father but this was just a far fetched idea I had. It was most likely someone who had nothing to do with me or my unknown father.
I sighed thinking of this throughout the night until I finally fell asleep for a short time just before dawn. When I woke the sun was just rising over the horizon and the base was coming alive with troops moving about for the morning call. I sat up and stretched looking around to the others who were stirring from their slumber.
I stood up and went outside the tent to get some fresh air and have a look around the base. I was both looking at the base's activities and looking for dangers. I looked around for a while before looking at the others who started to leave the tent. I nodded slightly to them as I stood waiting with them and soon enough lieutenant colonel Nick walked over.
I heard him say he was to take them to the humvees that would take us to the base camp we were to be stationed at. I looked at the others before we followed Nick to a group of humvees ready to take us to our destination. I looked at them and saw a group of men around the vehicles. I immediately knew they were the team taking to our base camp.
I walked over and looked at the humvees critically. As I looked at them assessing the damage on them I ignored the others as they talked. I only snapped out of my assessment of the vehicles when Jamie tapped me on the shoulder.
"We're going in the same humvee. Me, you and Charles, along with another guy who's going to drive. And lucky us we are in the lead humvee." Jamie explained.
I nodded saying nothing before following her to the humvee we were to be in. I got in behind Jamie and had a seat seeing Charles already sitting in the vehicle. I saw a man whom I had seen standing by the humvees earlier sitting behind the wheel and he looked at us all before introducing himself.
"I'm captain Sean, I'll be taking you to camp green. It's a pleasure to meet you all." I nodded, "Private Kanami Suzuki." Jamie spoke, "staff Sergeant Jamie wilks." Charles spoke, Warrant officer class one, Charles Whane, pleasure to meet you sir"
Captain Sean nodded before he started the humvee and started out. I sat back in my chair and looked out the window thinking. Though I may have looked relaxed I was still on guard. I didn't want to be caught unawares by anyone or anything.
I watched as the scenery outside the window passed by as we drove. Several hours had already passed as we continued to drive through the land headed for our base camp. I looked to the others as they fidgeted in their seats even captain Sean was getting fidgety.
Captain Sean finally spoke, "I heard your squad was made up of experienced people. So why is it your in this squad Private Kanami?" I spoke, "I've had experience fighting but had never been apart of the military so when the draft came I was shoved into this mess"
Captain Sean paused for a moment before asking, "you got shoved in when the draft came in then that would mean you came in with the experienced soldiers. You must have not gone to boot camp. Who would do this to a rookie like you?"
I sighed and after a moment spoke, "General S.S. Howser sent me in without boot camp saying it would be pointless for me to go to boot camp. Though he was right about boot camp I still would rather not be here"
Captain Sean looked stunned before asking, "what did you do to get the Generals attention and approval to just come straight to the battlefield?" I paused, "I helped put a stop to the 2072 revolt with him."
I sighed helpless as Jamie and Charles stared at me and Captain Sean kept looking back at me over his shoulder with shock on their faces. I looked back out the window ignoring their shocked looks. I heard Charles speak up after a while of silence.
"I knew you met the General during the 2072 revolt but I had no idea you actually participated in the fighting"
I looked at them and nodded, "I more than participated.." Jamie asked, "what do you mean?" I paused before speaking, "you know I was a victim when it first started but I also fought. After waking from the hospital I joined Howser and fought the revolter's. I was the one who killed their leader."
I looked away as the others went silent. That suited me just fine. I didn't want to talk anymore. I just wanted to get to our base camp and not deal with any of the others for a time. I would have liked to just go out for a long run or get into a good fight to clear my mind. But since I couldn't I could only sit quietly as my thoughts went back to that time when I woke in the hospital.
