Chapter 2 - The Shadows That Haunt

Selena Sinclair opened her eyes, feeling the sunlight streaming through the curtains of her room. That morning, as usual, was quiet and still. The city outside seemed busy, but Selena's world felt motionless. Every step she took, every decision she made, was always tied to a past she could never let go of.

She sat on the edge of her bed, taking a deep breath. There was only the sound of the ticking clock and the sigh of the wind from the outside. Nothing new. Nothing exciting. Selena had grown used to her empty routine—office work that gave her no room to dream, and days that repeated without any clear purpose.

That day, like any other, Selena went to the office. But even though everyone around her seemed busy, Selena felt like a stranger in their world. Her thoughts often drifted back to her childhood—the sound of her father and mother's shouting that always filled the house. Every conversation she heard seemed to stop in her ears, as if something was interrupting. Her memories resurfaced—the nights full of anxiety, the faces arguing without end.

When she entered the office, the usual lively atmosphere felt hollow. Selena sat at her desk, staring at the empty computer screen. Tasks piled up, but she felt no energy to complete them. She was burdened by her own thoughts.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.

Selena lifted her gaze and saw her colleague, Lucas, standing in the doorway.

"Selena, here are the documents you need to sign," Lucas said, handing her a stack of papers.

"Thank you, Lucas," Selena replied, taking the documents without saying much. She felt trapped in this routine, like a machine that kept turning even though her heart was empty.

However, something felt different that day. That morning, Selena overheard an unusual conversation. Rachel, her cheerful coworker, was talking excitedly in the break room. "Did you know that an important guest is coming in this morning?"

Selena looked over, a bit curious. "An important guest?"

"Yes," Rachel said with a wide smile. "The director of Quinn Enterprises is coming to check on the progress of our new project. He's known for being very wise and caring towards his employees. We might get the chance to meet him."

Selena was taken aback when she heard the name. Quinn Enterprises. A name she often heard in the news. A highly respected company, led by someone not only known for their success in business but also for their involvement in social causes. Famous for being humble, frequently involved in charitable and educational events.

But Selena felt confused. Why was someone so significant visiting their team all of a sudden?

The day passed as usual, but that feeling of curiosity continued to linger in Selena's mind. Work piled up, but her thoughts were still adrift, trying to figure out what was really going on.

When she finished her tasks and was about to leave, something caught her attention. On her desk, there was a small envelope with "Selena Sinclair" written on it. Without thinking much, she opened the envelope.

Inside was a simple note with neat handwriting:

"Congratulations on your hard work, Selena.May your days be filled with happiness. Keep inspiring others."

Selena stared at the note, confused. There was no clear sign of who sent it. Just simple words that felt warm and thoughtful. Selena felt something stir in her heart, even though she didn't know who had written it.

Rachel then walked into her office, glancing at the open envelope. "Oh, that's probably from someone who appreciates you. It seems like they really care about their hardworking employees but choose to remain anonymous."

Selena fell silent, feeling the sincerity in those words. Even though she didn't know the sender, she felt a brief sense of comfort. The words brought her a sense of encouragement without expecting anything in return.

Outside the window, the rain began to fall again. Selena reflected on everything that had happened that day. Though she still felt adrift from her past, today she felt a little calmer. Maybe, just maybe, this was a sign that something better was waiting for her.
