Chapter 34 - Strange Duo

Raaz realized they shouldn't talk about Hagam's work in such a place, so he decided to have a drink and discuss other matters.

It was quite a spectacle to see such a refined noble having a cup of tea with a someone who resembled a street rat, especially since said street rat reeked of blood. The two acted with little to no elegance, they were having a loud conversation and disregarded anyone who tried to intervene. Hagan noticed the stared and whispers but since Raaz disregarded them, he did too. Hagan was mostly hoping to talk about potential jobs or some better housing. There was nothing wrong with the Moonlight Inn he was staying at, he just wanted something more… elegant.

But, Raaz was mostly making small talk, asking questions, which Hagan obviously had to answer at least somewhat truthfully, and making jokes. All was well, it was comfortable, there was food and drinks, and there was a surplus of elegantly beautiful people in the room. Then a few nobles got a bit brave.

"That kid reeks."

"What is he doing here."

"He doesn't deserve to be in a place like this, let alone talking with Marquis Raaz."

Raaz glanced over at the gilded nobles and they stopped talking.

… For a little bit.

A particularly nosy person approached their table, he had black hair and brown eyes. He had on a green blazer with a white button up, his pants were black and all of it seemed to be crafted with exquisite finesse.

As he approached, Hagan manifested his Sword of Light, he'd increased its rank and was now able to change its shape. He made it into a dagger and hid it under his sleeve, since it was crafted from the surrounding light, there was practically no chance of seeing it manifest.

"Ah, it's nice to see you on such a fine day, Marquis Raaz. I hope you've been well."

Raaz shifted his posture and smiled.

"I was well."

He responded with a friendly tone.

"I couldn't help but notice you didn't greet my esteemed guest here, Mr. Hagan." He said as he gestured towards Hagan. "May I take that as a slight to me and my friend here?"

The man immediately recoiled back a little and with a panicked expression, bowed a little.

"Oh, umm. No- No Marquis. I apologize."

Hagan didn't fail to notice the glare he was being poked with by many people, including the scoundrel who approached him. He also noticed the man still didn't acknowledge Hagan by greeting him. Hagan sighed and looked at Raaz who had an unpleasant expression on his face.

"Viscount Ericsson, do you not remember what had happened last year? You know, that time when you older brother who was meant to inherit the title had a trouble some encounter and was killed?"

"Yes, what of it?"

"So you do remember the people you hired, you do remember the forged letter you wrote, and you do remember paying a group of mercenaries to attack a carriage, I presume?"

"Wha- what are you talking about?"

"Oh my, must I spell it out for everyone here? You forged a letter addressed to your brother, had him leave in a carriage, and then hired bandits to attack and kill him. Did you honestly think nobody would find out? Who do you think those mercernaries actually work for? Me obviously, you must know that I am a co-owner of the Mercernary House!"
