Dawn never stood out, she was plain and boring, a homebody, with brown hair, and black eyes and at times she was called ugly.
She was scrawny and had no friends; she was the type of girl everyone called a weirdo and often laughed at a lot.
Today she was going to be a maid, that's all she could do as her mother had no financial means, and most of her clothes went up to date.
Not that she minded, but now as she sat in the living room.
"I hear you go to the same school as my Grayson."
She knew Grayson all too well. The typical blonde hair and blue eyes, athletic, drove a Harley and was wanted by every girl.
He did not conform to the rules, smoked at school, was rude, and was a certified asshole, "Yes mam."
"You don't have to be nervous, Dawn. I'm glad your mother sent you to live with me. I'm sure where she went to will be for the best."
She nodded.
"Is there anything you need to know?"
"No, mam."
Dawn meant it, she had seen every inch of the house, and where she was cleaning. There was a loud noise.
"I'm leaving." And it was Grayson. He looked at them weirdly.
"Grayson, this is Dawn. She will be working for us and she goes to the same school as you."
"I have never seen her." He replied.
"Oh, wait, is she the freak?"
"Grayson! Mind your manners!"
"I won't. I call it as I see it. She better not think that she can talk to me at school."
"I'm sorry." His mom said and got up as her phone rang.
"Such a waste to have a maid that looks like you," Said Grayson.
She looked down and did not talk back. He only knew her as a freak, but he did not remember how much he bullied her.
Dawn got up and made her way to her room. That will be where she would be if not at school or cleaning.
The room she had was better than anything she ever had, and what Grayson had said about her was nothing new.
Her whole life that was what everyone called her. She was quiet and making friends, everything was hard for her and anxiety was her best friend.
She unpacked everything in her room and when done, Dawn was hungry and was a bit nervous to go and open the fridge.
There was a knock on her door. "Come in."
The door opened. "Aren't you hungry?" Grayson's mom asked.
"Yes, mam."
"Come on, then."
She got up and followed her into the kitchen.
"You don't have to starve. You can come get some food anytime."
"Thank you."
"Sit."
Dawn did just that and sat down. Grayson's mom worked and put a plate in front of her when she was done. "thank you so much."
"Eat up and if you want anything else, check the refrigerator, and if you need anything else, you can come to me."
"Thank you, mam."
Dawn started to scarf down her food. It was delicious and thankful that she had made her such a precious meal.
She and her mom often ate leftovers, nothing like this. When she was done eating, Dawn went to her room and started to do her homework.
Between moving, she did not get a chance to do it, and when it was time for dinner time, she went to the kitchen and found two plates.
One with her name on it and the other with Grayson's name on it. She opened hers and sat by the kitchen counter.
Even though they had not sat together, she was glad for that. Making conversation was hard for her.
She had taken in everything and was coming up with how she would clean the whole house.
The door opened, and she jumped when Grayson made it to the kitchen. He came in,
"Shit, I forgot that I have to get used to seeing your ugly face."
She did not respond. What could she say to that? And she was very anxious,
"Don't you speak?"
"Yes, I do." She replied, stuttering.
"What are you stuttering for?" He opened his plate and popped it in the microwave.
She did not respond and looked down. She was now forcing herself to eat fast so that she could be away from him.
He took his plate out of the microwave and sat across from her by the kitchen counter, and he was eating his food loudly.
"So how long are you going to live here?"
"I'm not sure."
"What is your name again?"
"Dawn."
"Dawn..."
Dawn did not know why she liked the way he said and tested her name, she knew that these feelings were one that she should not explore.
"Why are you red?" Grayson asked her.
She just kept quiet."
"Answer me when I talk to you!"
Dawn's heart beat faster. "It must be hot."
"Even answering a few questions seems to be hard for you."
Dawn nodded. She could not just ignore him. He seemed to hate being ignored.
"I hope you will clean our house well and don't interfere with me unless I talk to you or when you have to clean my room."
"Of course." She replied quickly.
"Geez, you're so fucking boring."
"I don't like to talk."
"Who does not?" Grayson replied, in a snarky tone.
"Of course, you won't reply."
"We all can't be the same."
She saw red in Grayson's eyes and he seemed to be angry as to what she had said to him.
"What did you say to me?"
"Sorry, I meant we are all not the same."
"Don't back down now, come on, carry on." Grayson challenged her, but she did not say a word, she was now afraid.
He was the one who had asked her but when she responds, he becomes furious with her.
"Don't make me ask you again."
"All I meant is that I like to be quiet. I'm not as cool as you're..... that conversation comes so easily to you."
He seemed to calm down. "I guess, can't be a coward like you."
Dawn wondered as to why he was going in on her so hard, for someone who wanted for her to speak, he seemed to not like to be challenged.
"When we're at school, don't even think about fucking talking to me."
"I won't...β¦"
"If you do talk to me, I will make sure that your life will be a living hell."
Dawn nodded fast, and finally, she finished her food, she got up and started to fill the sink so that she could clean the plates.
"You should be glad that my mom let you come clean for us because personally, I would never let someone like you in our house."
She finished washing the dishes and felt her hair being gripped. "Don't fucken ignore me."
"What have I done so wrong?"
He let her hair go, "What the fuck? Don't you shower?" he wiped his hand on his pants.
"This day is just bullshit, and you're making it harder for me." He carried on.
"I'm sorry." She replied and meant it. He seemed to be in torment.
"Whatever."
He threw the dish into the sink and it splashed on her face, and he had disappeared. She could finally breathe again.
Living here would prove to be a challenge only if she would bump into Grayson, so she hoped that she would not bump into him often.
He seemed to be unhinged and seemed to have ridiculous mood swings, yet her heart beat for another reason.
She shook her head, winning the lottery would be easier than her ever getting a chance to be with him.
She was okay with that, she knew that he was too cool for her in every aspect, his looks, his attitude, and the type of girls that he usually went for.
She had no chance at all, and that would make her put him away from him, away from his mind, when she was done Dawn went to her room.
After making sure that all her books had been packed, and her uniform was ironed and out for her to just put on.
She switched off the lights and went to bed.
