The emergency room was literally overflowing with different kinds of patients and medical personnels buzzed around, maneuvering the the crowd and picking out the most critical conditions to handle first and Jane was not left out.
She rolled a groaning man on a gurney, along with paramedics into the emergency ward and looked around for an emergency doctor.
"Doctor Shawn, a patient requires emergency surgery", she called the attention of an older doctor who was in the process of intubating a patient.
"There are other doctors in here, please get one of them to help you", the man waved her off and pulled his gloves, signalling the end of the procedure.
"If there was I wouldn't be bugging you. Are you doing it or should I leave him to choke on his own bodily fluids when there's a doctor from the surgery department here?", Jane snapped.
The man turned and looked at her, a shocked expression on his face. A few other nurses turned to look at her too, not used to the icy tone she used.
"What's the case?", he snipped.
"He was in an accident. No external injuries except for a few scratches but the soft tissue inflammation around his ribs suggests a ruptured spleen. His chest is congested too", Jane replied him, not minding his irritation.
She too was irritated.
The doctor went to examine the patient and soon conformed what Jane implied before the patient was wheeled towards the theater.
Jane heaved a sigh and went to check on other patients.
"Nurse Newman, could you finish this please?", a young nurse like Jane asked her.
The nurse was cleaning up an older woman with a very infested suture that leaked puss and her nose was scrunched up at the offensive odor that came from it.
"No I can't", Jane snapped and kept walking.
The nurse stared at Jane, dumbfounded at her attitude.
Jane walked into a changing room and pulled her scrubs before slipping into a black blouse and black baggy jeans.
"Are you leaving already?", a nurse asked her.
"Yes"
"We still have emergencies coming in"
"And my shift finished seven hours ago", Jane shrugged on the blouse and packed her scrubs in a cellophane wrap.
"You have been off since you came back", the nurse stated and crossed her arms.
"You mean I've not been a pushover since I came back?", Jane mused and stuffed the cellophane wrap into her handbag.
"No.... That's not what I meant. I just mean.....", the nurse stumbled on her words.
Jane stared at her blankly, waiting for her to complete her sentence but the woman couldn't produce any more words.
"That's what I thought", Jane sassed and walked out of the changing room.
She got out of the hospital and breathed in the cool evening air before starting her walk home.
Her calf still stung occasionally but it was bearable now and honestly, she didn't mind the pain.
It was better than the pain of her heart breaking when she remembers the past few weeks. Her phone buzzed and she ignored the call when she saw the caller ID.
It has been three weeks since she returned to the city and refused to pick any call from home. They call every three minutes and send her about ten messages before a day is over and she ignores every one of them.
After her morning encounter with her sister, she left at dawn the next day and left them without a dime, of course money was a big motivator for the many calls she got from them.
She talked to a couple of divorce lawyers and they all said the same thing. She will never be able to get that house in Abbey hills if Douglas's name is on the documents but she didn't want them to be left with anything so she will keep looking.
By the time she got to her apartment building, her legs felt stiff and all she wanted to do was to lay down and sleep both the hospital and home stress away.
She was also hungry. Which was why she headed straight to her kitchen when she locked her door behind her and flicked the switch on but a scream that came from the depth of her belly was all that could be heard from her when she found the figure sitting on her kitchen island.
"Hi", Sergio waved at her and chuckled at the knife she hastily grabbed and pointed at him.
"What are you doing here?", she asked him, moving slowly towards him with the knife aimed at him.
"Is that a way to treat your guests?", he mused.
"You are that man from the funeral", she observed.
Sergio tipped his hat and pulled it off to reveal his face, confirming her observation.
"Yep"
"So what are you doing here?", she still held her weapon.
"I might have what you need", he shrugged and picked up a banana.
"What could that be?", she asked skeptically.
"I need a nurse and you need a lawyer that can help you get your properties if you divorce your husband", Sergio bit into the banana and stared at her.
"How did you know I want a divorce?", she dropped the hand holding the knife but still stood on guard.
"Love, you've visited seventeen divorce lawyers and asked too much questions on Quora, it's a surprise the whole city doesn't know by now", Sergio stood up and threw the banana peel into her trash can, Jane held the knife up again.
"That anger that you feel inside needs to be transformed into an energy, any form of energy. You've worked too hard to crumble like this. You have two days to make a decision", Sergio started for the door.
"Oh... I'll be visiting again"
He walked out of the house, leaving a very confused Jane to her thoughts.
