A loud shriek echoed through the dark apartment and a thump followed suit but not before the lights came on to reveal Sergio, clad in his usual black attire, sitting on Jane's couch like he owned the place.
He tilted his head at her and trailed his eyes down her body to her handbag that she had dropped earlier.
"Why do you keep doing that? What happened to knocking and entering like a normal person?", Jane snapped at him.
Her hand was still on her chest as she tried to regulate her breathing. Sergio just looked at her, his eyebrows raised.
"So?", he asked.
"So what?", she side eyed him and picked up her bag but before she could catch it, the contents spilled out.
"I made an offer the last time I was here", Sergio sighed and placed his left ankle on his right knee.
Jane quickly packed her bag and came to sit down opposite Sergio.
She had thought long and hard about what he offered two days ago.
Her heart still felt heavy and she felt bitter and scorned. It was as if she had been a fool all her life and she's just knowing it and she wants justice.
A little part of her didn't care how it was gotten, she just wanted to show them that there was more to her than just a plain Jane but she felt lost.
All her life, the only thing she had ever taken serious is her books, her looks has never been a concern to her. She had always been this oblivious girl that avoids confrontation like the plague and that was something that people always abused about her.
Now she doesn't know how to be a woman, on her own new definition of being a woman. She knew that a divorce will never favor her and that little part of her wanted to take Sergio's offer.
She picked on the thread of her brown blouse that she paired with white leggings as she contemplated.
"Who are you?", she looked at him.
Sergio rubbed his face, his hand stroking over the smooth beard on his face.
"Sergio Delgado", he replied her and threw his hand behind the couch.
"Delgado? That name sounds familiar", Jane sat up.
Sergio just hummed.
"Delgado as in Juan Delgado? As in Mors Certa"?, she gasped.
"Yes. That Delgado. Now your answer", Sergio replied, an impatient edge to his voice.
"What is it to you?", Jane asked instead.
"Do you always stall when you are at crossroads?", Sergio asked her.
"I'm just curious. I do want revenge but I can't help my curiosity. It doesn't look like you have anything to gain from this arrangement. The Mors Certa can afford any nurse or doctor so why the offer?"
"I'm yet to figure that out myself but I know this, I don't take well to betrayal. When you were shot, there was no news about your disappearance. Naturally I got curious. Maybe I want in on the fun", Sergio shrugged and stood up from the couch.
Jane's eyes followed him as he moved around with grace, his broad shoulders and domineering height making her apartment look small.
Sergio Delgado was in her house.
She was still confused.
"I don't plan on getting involved with mafia troubles", Jane said after a beat.
"But you're already involved", Sergio turned to look at her, his dark orbs narrowing at the fidgeting woman.
Jane stared at him, oblivious to what he meant and Sergio sighed.
"When you were shot, I left the cemetery with you. Anyone can think there's something going on between us, that puts a target on your back"
Jane found herself blushing to his words, especially when he said something about something going on between them.
Sergio was an incredibly handsome man that his presence dominated anywhere he was, his scent too and while Jane had attracted a couple of men here and there, she had never had a man like Sergio look her way.
She knew it was an assumption but still, she found her face getting hot which was why her head was cast down to hide her embarrassment.
Sergio tilted his head at her, his lips involuntarily lifted at her actions that he found cute.
If only she knew.
"So?", he asked yet again, this time his voice was soft.
Jane wrung her hands together and bit her lips, an action that Sergio zeroed his eyes on.
"How do you want to help me?", Jane whispered.
"By making Jane Newman a force to reckon with", Sergio returned to the couch and sat down, his legs spreading further apart as he bent forward.
"You have always wanted to be sexy, be heard, to be respected.... You will finally get what you've always wanted"
It felt like a promise, one that got Jane to lift her head and stare at this beautiful man who was willing to clear a path for her yet nothing about him seemed hostile.
Yes, the name Delgado was always associated with danger and wickedness and she was sure this man lived up to that name but right now, he didn't seem hostile.
"I will go with you", she nodded her head.
Sergio leaned back and crossed his ankle on his knee again with a sigh leaving his lips.
"And I will finally get what I've always wanted too..", he murmured to himself as he looked at her.
Things were finally beginning to fall into place.
