Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Success is elusive for the underprivileged

Haha, in fact, the bank president doesn't know this girl either, right? Why did the president greet her directly? Later, the vice president told me that Zhou Zhou's mother is the director of the Price Department. Through connections, she found a certain vice director of the Banking Regulatory Bureau. This vice director directly called the bank president, and the big boss could only nod in agreement. Since the hard conditions were met, nothing else mattered. This was the first case. Later, I even heard that after this position was confirmed and Zhou Zhou signed the work contract, Zhou Zhou's mother, father, the vice director of the Banking Regulatory Bureau, and several of our bank presidents had a drink together. It was clear that only after Zhou Zhou signed the official contract did they have this feast. As for me, being at a low level, I wasn't qualified for this high-level invitation.

To find a good job and get the top leader's approval, if the competent department and the top leader of the unit give the green light, it's almost a sure thing. Maybe the unit even has to curry favor with you.

Since then, Zhou Zhou has gone to the sixth floor, the branch office, mainly responsible for the liaison work with the relevant departments. Of course, everyone understands what played the decisive role here.

Zhou Zhou is now my colleague and is in a relationship with a young man from the provincial government. The young man also comes from a similar family background. Well, in my opinion, her future is very bright. Of course, there was an episode with Zhou Zhou. During her internship, she fell in love with a classmate. Haha, her mother found that boy... Naturally, it was just a few months of romance...

The Story of Zhiguo

If a pair of parents name their child Zhiguo, they must have high expectations for the child.

Zhiguo is the class monitor at school and also a student union cadre. He plays basketball well, has a dark complexion, is energetic, and is diligent. He is interning in the Risk Control Department, a really good kid. I often see him running up and down with stacks of materials. The Risk Control Department has the greatest power, the most business, and naturally the most materials and documents. This is a bit tiring, with endless photocopying and meetings.

Zhiguo was arranged to intern in the Risk Control Department. The Risk Control Department is almost the department with the highest salary in the bank because of its numerous requirements. Of course, there are the most business dinners, and of course, the department receives the most small gifts.

Zhiguo is from a rural area. He has studied hard since childhood and plays basketball well. He has become a public figure in the university and is also very popular among the girls. When Zhiguo heard about the internship quota, he got the news from the Risk Control Department's boss. Several times after work, I saw him at my parking spot. When he saw me, he would greet me, and this went on for several days. I knew what he wanted to do. Once, I said, "Come on, take my car. It just happens to pass by your school, so you don't need to take a taxi." That day, my wife went to her mother's house to see the children, and I didn't have a business dinner. I just wanted to drive around, so I picked him up.

At first, the child was very cautious and restrained. I said, "It's great to be in the Risk Control Department, right? Work hard and strive to stay in the Risk Control Department. It's the most important department in the bank." Zhiguo seized this topic and started his conversation. When we were almost at the school, he said, "Brother, let me treat you to a meal here." At that moment, I thought this kid was quite interesting. He had said so many hinting words along the way, and when we were near the school, he said he wanted to treat me. Surely, this kid was thinking that he was familiar with the restaurants nearby and could treat me within his budget. But then I thought, the bank only gives them an internship salary of 800 yuan per month, and I don't know if his family still gives him living expenses. I said, "I'll treat you. When you start working, then you can treat me." So, without listening to his choice of restaurant, I chose a restaurant that I was more familiar with. And thus began my conversation.

I said that since I was driving, I wouldn't drink alcohol and let him have some. At first, he was still cautious, but after drinking a bottle of beer, Zhiguo began to talk about his background. He is from a rural family and has a younger brother. His parents are pure farmers who have high hopes for him. Through this internship at the bank, he feels that it would be great if he could stay. At this moment, I suddenly felt very depressed and didn't know what to say to him. He is still a child and hasn't experienced many business dinners. After I persuaded him to drink two bottles of beer, he started to tell me the truth. He told me that the Risk Control Department's boss had informed him about the quota, how he wanted to stay, and how hard he had studied in school. I found a problem. This child is not annoying, but he always talks about himself. He is still too young and too eager to stay and work. Suddenly, I felt a bit reluctant, but all I could say was to perform well. Finally, I told him, "Your department's boss, the Risk Control Department's boss, has a lot of weight in the bank. He is more useful than I am." But Zhiguo said something. He said that the boss told him to work hard but said nothing else. It was a department colleague who told him that I might have a quota. Naturally, I could only say a bunch of empty words. Amid his complaints, I sent the slightly drunk him back to school.

Later, Zhiguo came to my house to give gifts, a carton of cigarettes and some local specialties. I didn't accept them. Later, because of an external liaison activity, I reimbursed him for 500 yuan. Later, the Risk Control Department's boss said that Zhiguo had given him some local specialties, but the boss's wife thought they were not clean and threw them away. For the boss, it was a joke, but I knew that Zhiguo, you might be excellent at school and a hardworking child, but in this society where family background matters, you might have lost this job. Because the Risk Control Department's boss thinks this child is stupid and gave some worthless gifts.

Zhiguo is diligent and can talk. He was a student cadre at school. Maybe his prospects would have been good thirty years ago, but now, no one cares about your local specialties, Zhiguo. This is not an era where if you work hard, others will say you are good and speak up for you.

Zhiguo is very handsome, but being a handsome boy is of no use. No one guides him, and no one tells him how to do things. Everything is for him to explore on his own. Maybe Zhiguo will become successful in the future, but his fate has been determined before the age of 40. Only after being beaten black and blue by reality and knowing the truth of society can he adjust himself well.

...

Later, Zhiguo wasn't able to stay. After several interviews, he found a job at an insurance company. It's very hard work. Later, I met him once while shopping. I could tell that he seemed very tired and had a hard time. But I think Zhiguo is okay. I just can't figure out why the Risk Control Department's boss wouldn't speak up for him? If he had said something, I might have given him some help. This was a conversation I had with the Risk Control Department's boss at a business dinner later. The Risk Control Department's boss said that once he saw Zhiguo stuffing two packs of cigarettes for guests into his pocket. This incident made him completely reject Zhiguo. Later, I asked Xiaopang to ask Zhiguo why he took the cigarettes. Xiaopang gave me the answer that Zhiguo wanted to bring them home for his father to smoke because his father hadn't smoked Zhonghua cigarettes many times. At that moment, I just felt, really, one word: Alas...

It was Xiaopang who woke me up. He said that Zhiguo's family is not well-off, and he has no bad intentions. He just wants to give his father some cigarettes to smoke. I suddenly understood. The Risk Control Department's boss was too lazy to understand and didn't want to know why this child took the cigarettes for guests. But this detail made him completely dislike this top student. This is not a big deal, but this detail made him think that Zhiguo is annoying.

Zhiguo thought that there were so many Zhonghua cigarettes, and his father smokes. Casually taking a few packs for his father to let him smoke some good cigarettes. They were originally for guests, and it has nothing to do with theft.

However, it was this filial piety of Zhiguo that greatly damaged his image in the eyes of their boss. Also because of this, because his father hadn't smoked these cigarettes many times, Zhiguo lost his opportunity.

I asked Xiaopang if he would take them. Xiaopang said, "Can't I just buy them myself? It's not good for an intern to take such things. Anyway, it's just not good." This is the difference. Is it that Xiaopang is noble and doesn't have that idea? It's that Xiaopang's family can afford to buy them, so he wouldn't do it. Maybe Zhiguo also knows that it's not good to take them because he is just an intern, but the cigarettes are good, and it's too expensive to buy and smoke them himself. Out of filial piety, the reason is still the family.

Later, I learned that it was because of this incident that Zhiguo's boss was annoyed with him and didn't say a word for him. I also couldn't speak up for him anymore. This result is really indescribable. Is it because of the family or something else? I haven't figured it out. This child is quite pitiful.

Schools won't teach you how to conduct yourself in society. Even if there is a Moral Education class, the teacher only talks about general principles, and you might not really listen. Where is the real education on how to be a person? It's all at home! Every parent has their own set of principles and methods for conducting themselves, and they habitually pass this set of principles and methods on to their children because they think it's the right thing to do. Otherwise, they wouldn't have done it in their own lives. But many ordinary parents don't think about whether their own lack of success is related to their own ways of conducting themselves. If it is related, can they still teach their old ways to their children and make their children unsuccessful for a lifetime?

To sum up, children from more privileged families are relatively less stingy with money and are relatively more cheerful in personality. Previously, I always had the impression that children from ordinary families should be more simple and honest. But by observing these children and relating it to my own friends and colleagues, really, children from families with poorer conditions are mostly somewhat sly, and there is a great calculation process in doing things. This calculation process is a good thing for parents because it is more economical, but for one's own development, making friends, and life attitude, it is a big thinking framework that often follows one for a lifetime.

The differences in thinking methods are even greater. For example, the thinking method of Xiaopang's father and his education of Xiaopang. How to correct the problems one has. How to have the ability to be self-aware. Most of these children, when encountering problems, first complain, and then think of other things. And generally, they don't think about their own faults. Both thinking methods form their own systems. From the outside, you can't see the direct consequences they produce. Therefore, as children, it is particularly easy to inherit the thinking methods of their parents. But it is precisely the thinking method that is the fundamental determinant of whether one is excellent or not.
