"There were a gang of people eating with him, but he was left there after he was drunk." After Sheena paid the bill, the female boss said by shaking her head to show her disgrace. "Such kind of friends."
"Some left when they were full." The young waiter caught up in an angry voice.
Sheena sneered and didn't say anything. If those friends could be counted as friends, their family wouldn't be ended like this. They knew nothing but gambled and idled around with her farther. None of them had a complete family, some were divorced while some were alone with kids. Sheena had ever met one of them left his kid alone at home for a whole day without leaving anything for his kid to eat, it's her who went there to look after that kid for a whole night before he came back with a drunk body without any thanks.
This was the life of the gambler, so was her father's. If not for her Grandpa Bryant, her family may have been smashed into pieces by all those quarrels and fights at those dark nights.
Therefore, for such gamblers like her father Evan and his friends, Sheena wouldn't have too much expectation. As the saying goes, expecting less would be better than being disappointed over and over again.
"Could you handle it?" The young waiter inquired with worry in eyes after he had helped her to escort him into the taxi.
Sheena thanked him with sincerity. "You helped us a lot and thank you. That's enough."
For such favors, she didn't want to owe others too much. As long as she could handle it, she would rather do it herself.
Therefore, when she had successfully dragged Evan Hathaway into her rental apartment, she was dead tired.
"Could you handle the rest?" The neighbor who had helped her to escorted her father from the lobby of the building asked in a friendly way. Yes, she was lucky that when she was dragging him to the building and taking a rest in the lobby, her neighbor in the opposite room had come back from the night snack that he gave a hand to her. In fact, she was a little embarrassed. Since the very beginning of moving into this apartment, she had never tried to talk to the neighbors even they'd met for times.
Therefore, it was the first time for they chatted and it's due to the trouble she was running into.
Sheena opened the door and thanked him sincerely, "Thank you very much. I will handle the rest."
"Okay, good luck." After saying that, this "acquaintance" went into his apartment.
"Oh, forgot to ask his name…" Sheena suddenly thought of this and when she looked back, the man had closed the door.
"Okay, next time to say thank you with gifts." Sheena murmured to herself and then focused on looking after her father.
After a simple cleaning on the clothes or the limbs, Sheena let Evan Hathaway sleep on the soft in the living room. During the whole process, Evan Hathaway had slept so tight he didn't struggle or wake up.
Deep into Sheena's heart, she would rather like his sleeping tight when compared with being awake. For if he was awake, she may lose temper and complain for justice.
How come a father messed around like this when his own father was hospitalized for cancer? However, she knew blaming at such a moment would mean nothing but quarrels and fights.
Therefore, Sheena chose to sort out herself after the entire process of looking after her father.
Diving for the bed, Sheena finally could breathe out all the tiredness she had gathered in the whole day. It's a tough day, and she knew the most important thing now for her was to take a good rest. Collected from the experience in the past, nothing would be the worst but worse.
In the next day, right before the first glimpse of sunshine shining into through the window beside the bed, Sheena was wakened up by a bang from the living room.
Without a second thought, Sheena jumped up from the bed and rushed out of the bedroom.
"What's the matter?"
When she got out, what she saw was her drunk father fallen from the sofa and smashed a water cup into piece.
Hearing the voice of Sheena, Evan Hathaway originally was on all fours on the floor and struggled to sat up. He was in a embarrassed face that Sheena could tell he may be embarrassed for the drinking.
Right at seeing the awake face of Evan Hathaway, Sheena couldn't show any gentle face.
"I just wanted to drink a cup of water." Evan Hathaway said as if doing something wrong.
Sheena gave a sardonic grin, "No need to pretend. Just enjoy whatever you like." Putting a cup of water on the tea table along the sofa, Sheena planned to go back the bed room for a rest.
Last night she was too exhausted that she had asked for a leaving from the internship company, which had approved.
Evan Hathaway was ablush in face, but he interrupted the leaving of Sheena, "Hey, how much the night snack last night? I guess you've paid it."
Sneering, Sheena bit her lower lip and then turned around, "wow, you did remember you haven't paid the bill of the night snack, how about your friends, why didn't you guess it's paid by them?"
However, Evan Hathaway just ignored the mocking of Sheena and still struggled to put in a good word for them, "their life is not easy, what's more, they have lost their shirts in the gambling house."
It turned out that he did go to gamble and lost a lot. "So, they are pitiful that you are kind enough to clean up the mess for them? Wow, such a hero!" Sheena just couldn't withstand his unproper kindness.
"Are you the only winner yesterday?" Sheena was amazed if he would admit such a situation.
When he treated the family the last time was his winning in the gambling house with 1,000dollars. Sheena could still remember the scenario when he asked them to order everything they would like to eat. In the usual time, they wouldn't have such a timing of choosing the dishes they like. Both Sheena and her sister Cherry were delighted for the happy hours they had spent in that restaurant.
"No, I lost all my money…" Evan Hathaway looked up when saying this, as if afraid of hearing the blame from Sheena.
Hearing the expected expectation admitted by Evan Hathaway, Sheena was amazed that she was not that angry as expected. After all, she had solidified the expectation of results herself that when the results came out she had alaready accepted it.
"Whatever you did is none of my business now. Pack up yourself before you leave." Sheena said and entered the bedroom without waiting for the acceptance from Evan Hathaway. "By the way, please mind the bill paying, I wouldn't have so much money to cover all those shits."
Nothing was heard from the mouth of Evan Hathaway.
An hour later when Sheena was awake from catching up on sleep, she was surprised the living room had been cleaned up and Evan Hathaway was still sitting on the sofa and watching TV player.
"Why are you still here?" Sheena didn't get the answer yet but she had a kind of sixth sense that his behavior was weird enough.
Evan Hathaway gave a flattering smile, "Sheena, before my leaving, could you give me another 3,000dollars?"
With widely-opened eyes, Sheena was shocked by the saying of Evan Hathaway. In the past, Evan Hathaway did asked her for money since she could do part-time jobs and earn money, but every time he would just asked for several hundred as a kind of pocket money. The bill last night had been already a unusual case. However, Sheena had convinced herself to accept it since it's a bill for a gang of people's night snack. But that's all she could accept. How could he just ask for several thousands when she was still a semi student yet.
"What?" Sheena looked back to Evan Hathaway and couldn't believe what he had said out.
Evan Hathaway didn't dare to look into the eyes of Sheena, and he just looked down and stared at that cup of water that had been cold due to the passing time.
"Give me 3,000, then I wouldn't bother you this week." Evan Hathaway insisted but didn't looked up.
It turned out that, the house cleaning did have its price, and the bill was deemed to pay by Sheena.
Sheena sneered, even though she knew her father wouldn't see because he didn't dare to look up. "I haven't gone out for work, how come I have so much to pay all you're doing?"
Deep down in heart, Sheena still expected her father would have some faith and conscience in knowing the wrongness of doing this. However, things seemed to not go as she wished.
"3,000 is enough, I wouldn't ask you more." Evan Hathaway was as if deaf and kept insisting the money asking.
