Jayden's POV
I charged at Seth, my only thoughts were to protect my mate. I knew Seth had no plans of hurting any of us, but when a werewolf was angry, he was unpredictable. Right now, he could kill me if he had a chance. I knew because I could hear his every thought.
"Calm down Jayden, please don't do something you'd regret", Eric said in my head. He was communicating to me through his thoughts. He must know Eric and I were about to fight.
I had no intention of hurting Seth, but I had no intention of doing nothing either, if he attacked then I would have to defend.
"Seth is brother Jayden, please", Eric begged desperately. I could hear his heart beating wildly, he was probably running to where we were. He had gone out with Betty, his mate, and I felt a little bit bad for cutting short time together time.
Seth took a step forward, his lips curving back to show his long, razor-sharp canines, he was planning his attack carefully since he knew I was much faster and stronger than he was. Reflectively, I moved forward but stopped in my tracks when Jovita stepped in between us, her eyes were pleading.
She lifted her hands slowly to touch me, and I felt my wolf slowly calming down, but that was for a short while, as the next thing knew was Seth running towards me, a growl erupting from him.
I swept Jovita behind me, meeting Seth's attack heads on.
"Nooo", Jovita screamed in a shrill voice.
I tried my best to tower Seth away from her, I didn't want her to get hurt.
"Stay away, you don't want to get in between", I heard Eric say to her. He must have arrived already. I sighed, relieved. Now I could attack my opponent with a focused mind.
Charging fully at Seth, I tossed him deeper into the forest. We needed to have a good talk.
"How could you?" Seth groaned in his head. It seemed he wanted to do the talking too, I realized with a chuckle.
"I don't think I owe you an explanation Seth, she's my mate!"
"How can you be certain?" He screamed. She's yet to wolf out yet you claim to be her mate, are you trying to toil with her feelings?"
"I cherish her more than you'd ever know". I stilled for a while, startled that those had just come from me.
"She's not one of your games Jayden. What happens to her when you complete your mission here, what happens to her when the pack rejects her?
His words cut deep. They weren't far from the truth. What would happen to Jovita when I completed my mission here? My pack already expected me to choose a strong Luna after completing my mission. My father was old already, and the throne needed a successor. I could say Jovita was my fated mate, but that won't work as great whites had the special advantage of switching their mates.
It was what Seth was trying to do, I realized. He was a great white, so he could abandon his mate for Jovita.
A sharp tear on my forearm, followed by a flow of blood and a stab of pain reminded me that I was on a battlefield, and not a thinking space.
Incited with mad pain, I attacked Seth viciously, pummelling him repeatedly until Eric managed to tower me away.
When I looked at Seth, he had transformed back to his human form, looking fragile and weak. His strong well-built body was covered in blood, and his breathing was shaky. For a moment I was scared I had killed him. I had never fought with an enemy and left them alive, I was grateful for Eric's timely interference.
I transformed back to my human form, staggering to where Seth lay, dreading the sight of the fatal damages my punches must have caused. Eric hovered him, examining his injuries.
"He only has a few minor injuries which would heal in a day or two, except you decide to heal him yourself", Eric said, when I reached where they were.
"I didn't mean to go that far", I said, still surprised at how fast I had defeated Seth. My wolf seemed to be a lot more active when it came to matters concerning Jovita.
I felt her presence before I knew she was there, the wind carrying her sweet scent towards me. My heart did a quick race, and for a moment I was scared she would consider me a monster seeing what I had done to her friend.
I heard a low gasp escape her lips as she edged forward. I didn't want her to see me this way. I felt beaten to the core.
"Seth? Seth? She called half-walking, half-running towards us.
I could feel my heart break into a million pieces. She hadn't even cared whether or not I got hurt, her only concern was Seth.
I stood from where I had been squatting beside Seth to stare at her, but she barely noticed me, her eyes fixed on Seth's beaten frame.
I flinched as she breezed past me, stooping to cradle Seth on her lap.
"Are you okay?" She asked in a low, soft, soothing voice.
I took a step backwards as I felt my chest twist in pain.
Slowly I turned around and dashed into the forest, my wolf couldn't bear the sight.
What hurt me most was the fact she didn't even notice my absence.
