Jayden's POV
I stared at Jovita's opened eyes, gratitude filling my heart, I wasn't sure I had ever been this happy.
She looked at me with a perplexed expression on her face, and then her expression turned to one of concern.
I regarded her keenly, wondering why she was looking at me with those large, lovely, worry-laced eyes, I was the one meant to be worried about her, she had almost died.
It almost would be an understatement, as I had thought I already lost her. She was as cold as an ice block just a few minutes ago. Her pulse had seized, and I could no longer hear a heartbeat.
I had tried all I could to heal her, including calling the most powerful healer of my clan. The ancient one had done his job, and left saying she was communing with her ancestor, and would return soon.
I had found that confusing wondering what he meant, and at that moment, I started to feel her heartbeat slip away until it finally stopped.
For a moment my world seized too as a choking pain clutched my chest. I was breathless, and I could hear my wolf crying in my head. My wolf had never cried. Not even at my mom's funeral, but today it cried over Jovita.
And suddenly her eyes flickered open, stunning me. I was still trying to process what had just happened. Slowly, anger filled me. Had this all been a prank? Did she play dead or what? One minute she was cold, and the other she was giving me a disdainful stare, and now it was a worried look. Had this all been a joke to her?
I didn't realize I was crying until she raised her hand to wipe off my tears. I felt a warm feeling engulf me, she had never touched me, I realized. Still, my anger burned. I wasn't going to push out my anger because of how I felt about her touch, I had to get it straight with her.
"What's wrong?" She asked in a low, soothing voice that suddenly calmed my sad wolf, but I was feeling far from sad, and her voice could not soothe the raging anger building inside me.
"Was this all a joke to you?" I asked, wrenching her hand from my face.
"What do you mean?"
A confused look played on her face.
"So you're going to fern ignorance now, are you?"
"I don't understand you Jayden".
"I don't understand you either Jovita, one moment you're dead, the next you're alive? What was all that? Playing dead? A prank? Tell me, was the vampire incident even real?
She looked at me, her turquoise eyes burning with anger.
"I still don't understand what you mean, Jayden".
I could hear her voice cold now, and I was glad. At least now she felt my pain too.
"Well I guess you don't need to understand, it was all fun to you", I said, matching her icy tone.
"I didn't play dead, I can't even remember what happened to me". The last thing I remember was being strangled by a vampire, and afterwards, having a strange conversation with a weirdo who claimed to be my mother. What do you mean by your outburst?" She screamed.
"Oh, now you don't remember". Is that the new excuse?"
She stared at me, I could see livid anger in her eyes.
I knew I was overreacting, but she had put me through all this for nothing, and here she was feigning ignorance.
"What if you're wrong?" My inner voice questioned. I ignored the voice, I was quite sure I was right.
Jovita stood up, arranging her clothing and hair, her eyes darting around. She was probably trying to register where she was.
"You seem pretty much in perfect condition for a person who just almost died", I said. I couldn't hide the mockery in my voice.
"Where am I?" She asked, ignoring my outburst.
"So leaving is all you want to do?"
"Clearly I shouldn't be here".
"An apology would do Jovita, you can't imagine what you put me through".
"And if I refused to render it? What would you do?"
I stood stunned, I had never been challenged in my entire life, not even by my Beta. I closed my eyes trying to calm down.
"So you're admitting it was all a fake", I said in a low voice.
"I need to get going now, my parents would be worried", she replied, nonchalantly, ignoring my question again.
"Jovita!"
She turned to leave like she had not heard me. No one had ever walked out on me.
Instinctively, I grabbed her hands and pulled her to me. She spun, tripping, and landing on my chest just in time. It was still bare from my last night running.
When she noticed that fact, she tried to pull away, but I held her tighter, caging her with my body.
"Let me go", she said shutting her eyes and trying her best to avoid contact with my naked upper body, though that was quite impossible as she was on my chest.
"You would tell me what I need to know mate", I growled, staring into her eyes. I could lose myself in them.
"I would tell you nothing".
"I'm not asking".
"I don't care, think whatever you want!"
"Do I mean so little to you? I asked, hurt by her words.
"You mean nothing".
I stiffened, releasing her. I felt a painful twist in my chest.
"You can go", I managed to say.
She walked away with a reply, while I stood listening to her footsteps as she retreated.
When I finally turned around, she was gone. Her scent was the only evidence that she once laid still before my eyes, only a few minutes ago.
