Chereads / The Story of a Saint / Chapter 17 - Talking with God

Chapter 17 - Talking with God

At this moment, God was in a relaxed state, so He wasn't reading Alex's thoughts, which made Him slightly startled by Alex's question.

"Are you joking with me? So now I feel like destroying humanity, giving no chance at all, and just crushing them all thirty years from now."

Alex realized that his mouth had gone too far, so he lowered his head and said:

"I sincerely apologize, that was out of line."

"Forget it, I won't bother with such trivial matters. In the future, you'll even dare to curse me to my face."

"Uh, that's because I was driven to a dead end, so that's why I acted that way. Also, I didn't understand you back then."

Hearing this, God found it somewhat interesting and asked:

"Oh, so now you understand me? How do you understand me?"

At this moment, Alex's face became extremely serious as he replied:

"The kindest in the world is God, the cruelest in the world is also God, and the most powerful in the world is God. In short, God is everything, whether good or bad, so one should never use mortal emotions to judge God."

God nodded with satisfaction. There were many who understood Him, but on this planet, He had just met one.

"You're not wrong, but if you say so, then answer me this. People are so contradictory, they always say I am everything but always associate me with the best behavior by their standards and forget the worst. They don't seem to understand what the word 'everything' means. Oh, if I am everything, does that mean even the trash of humanity is also part of me?"

Alex, after all, was a saint, so his level of calmness and composure was very high. This question didn't faze him at all.

"Of course, because nothing is truly garbage in the eyes of God."

"Oh, then what are my eyes like?"

"Of course, anything born into this world but unable to fulfill the purpose destined for it by fate is truly garbage. And I'm certain that God will erase all such things."

"Hahaha, not bad. So do you know why you will die at that time?"

Alex was suddenly taken aback. He hadn't expected the conversation to shift to his future self. But he still seriously pondered the matter.

God lacked nothing, and obviously, time was no exception, so He comfortably allowed Alex to think as long as he needed.

After thorough consideration, Alex gave his answer.

"A saint appears in response to the call of the era, to take on the responsibilities that belong to them. When everything is resolved, there's no longer any reason for the saint to continue existing. I'm not wrong, am I?"

"Well then, do you still want to be a saint now? Or would you prefer to live a happy life?"

Hearing this, Alex immediately burst into laughter:

"Hahaha, no need to pretend to be so naive. Being a saint is not a matter of wanting to or not wanting to, it's something you're born with. I was born to be a saint, which means in the future I will become one, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'll reach the saint level."

"If you say so, then you understand that you may not necessarily break through to the saint level if the course of the future changes, right?"

"The measure of a saint is not through strength, but through their personality and purpose in life. Does it really matter whether I reach that level? What I desire is for my life worth enough to be exchanged for a chance of survival for humanity. By the way, if I were to make that trade now, would you agree?"

He asked this just to test the waters, not really believing in the possibility. And indeed, everything turned out as he expected. God simply shook His head and replied:

"I am testing all of humanity, not just you alone. Moreover, do you think that you alone are worth trading for all of humanity? Even when you reach saint level, you won't have that qualification."

"I was just trying, I understand that. But there's one thing I want to ask: does humanity truly have a chance?"

"Of course there is. Since it's a test, there must be a correct answer. No matter how difficult it may be, I won't make it impossible to succeed. After all, I don't want to destroy humanity, I just want to test them. But if they fail the test, I will destroy them. If you have anything else to say, say it now, because after this, I will only meet you again at the very last moment."

Alex nodded and began to think. A direct meeting with God was incredibly valuable, so he needed to make the most of it.

After a while, he realized there wasn't much else he could ask, so he decided to inquire about something more personal.

"It's unrelated to humanity, but I have a question. In life, there are people who struggle all their lives and still suffer, while others are born into luxury and comfort until the end. I feel this seems a bit unfair."

"Unfair? So, in your case, should you be considered happiness or suffering?"

"I am a saint, not a mere human. A true saints neither experience happiness nor suffering, they only exist to fulfill their duty."

Alex did have some special feelings because he awakened to his saintly side later than others. Now that he is a 100% genuine saint, he doesn't really have any feelings of sadness or happiness.

"So, you truly don't understand?"

"Correct." Alex nodded. Although he wished to protect humanity, these matters were not his concern in the original trajectory, so he didn't know.

"Good. After all, I am not short on time, and since time is accelerated in this space, it's not an issue for you. So, what if I told you that, in my eyes, they are entirely fair?"

Alex frowned upon hearing this, but God didn't seem to be lying. However, what He said was truly beyond Alex's understanding.

"Could you explain that in more detail?"

"Instead of explaining, I'll ask you a question. What is happiness? What is suffering?"

"Happiness or suffering are both matters of perception because they are relative concepts. For example, a person on the brink of starvation would feel immense happiness just by having food. Someone who has enough to eat and drink may want to become wealthier to achieve happiness. A wealthy person may want more status and to accomplish something great to benefit others, seeking happiness through that. The more one has, the more they are prone to feel suffering from trivial things."

"You're not wrong. What humans call happiness and suffering are two opposing concepts, yet to me, they are the same. They are both experiences. Every human life is an opportunity to experience. Those who experience joy do not have the chance to know what suffering is. Those who experience suffering all their lives don't have the chance to know what joy is. Each type of person has an experience the other can never have. Therefore, in my eyes, they are equal, and life is completely fair."

Even though God said this, Alex felt it was fundamentally wrong. He asked:

"Uh, if that's the case, then why does everyone want to be rich and not poor? At least, that's what most of humanity desires."

"You should remember that you're asking me, not a human. To me, a being who has lived through endless ages, all the experiences that you humans consider the worst or the most joyful, I have already gone through them. All of them are immensely interesting in their own way, each possessing its own uniqueness."

"But the rich have more choices than the poor. Is that fair?"

"Hmph, does having more choices or fewer choices matter? Whether you have many or few, the path you can choose, the road you can walk, is still just one. If you want to switch paths, you must give up the achievements you've already made.

In history, there have been many who came from humble beginnings and became great emperors. They were poor, they had few choices, yet in the end, didn't they still stand at the pinnacle of their era?

I don't see any injustice in the social stratification of humanity.

Many people always want everything but regret many things, especially their lives. As long as people do not regret their lives, and do not care about themselves no matter how miserable they are, then people can freely pursue any goal no matter how unimaginable it is.

Otherwise, they dare not do anything merely going through the motions to extend a meaningless life. I have no interest in such people because they are boring, yet society cannot do without them. These individuals exist to highlight the greatness of exceptional people. It's called the art of contrast.

However, if one day human society here is filled with people who dare to risk everything for their ambitions, I will witness races of the highest caliber with countless contestants. This scenario is also very interesting, but I will not actively make it happen. I always grant humanity the right to decide their own lives."
