Chapter 2 - Nano Era

The new era had already created many changes for the world as a whole.

It was like nature had been granted a way to finally fight back a little to gain an advantage over humanity for some time causing massive losses to the humans that remained in the world.

Just when humans were being put in danger and were struggling, new humans began to appear who could fight back and take back the world for themselves.

Those humans were those who were introduced to what had been released into the world or who had been born from those introduced to it.

What Dr Victor had created would be passed onto the next generation and would begin to manifest once they reached an appropriate age.

Most of the signs related to it began to appear once someone reached the age of thirteen while others of the earlier generations that were adults awakened it as soon as they were introduced to it.

There were some exceptions involved and that was mainly related to those who had undergone cybernetic modifications.

The two were not compatible so only pure humans without a single modification would gain what had been released onto the world while others with the modifications would still be capable of passing it on to their children.

It would simply remain dormant in the bodies of those who had the modifications to avoid there being a conflict but when they had children, it would be passed on to them.

It was the method that Dr Victor had found to aid humanity toward advancing away from the path they were on.

If humanity continued to rely on the cybernetic enhancements then they would not be able to take advantage of what he had created for the world.

It was either one or the other leaving no room for both being able to exist.

What manifested in humans was what was later given several names.

Some called it Nano Holograms or Nano Grams for short.

Others called them Nano Spirits while others gave them other less accurate names for them like calling them Nano Powers.

What they were was the nanoparticles awakening in the human body and bonding with them.

They would take the shape of something that would manifest itself from the bodies of humans taking an appearance similar to a hologram or some form of projection despite having a physical state.

They took on various forms and functions while most ended up being placed into different categories.

There was a tool category that primarily functioned as the manifestation taking the shape of a tool of some kind.

Depending on the shape and type it was, the range of functions it would have, and how it could be used.

Some were combat related while some were less combat related causing some humans to not be as helpful during the times when humanity was facing such a crisis.

Some humans could summon something similar like armor that would be used to protect their bodies.

They would usually be put into the same category as the tools but would provide far different uses and ways to utilize them compared to a lot of tools that could be primarily used offensively.

Those who possessed such tools were primarily close-range fighters unless they possessed a tool that had some form of ranged capabilities.

The next category was the elemental type which was the result of the nanoparticles taking on properties of a certain element.

Those who were within that category were usually better suited to ranged combat as their Nano Hologram took on the characteristics and properties of an element like fire causing things it touched to burn.

The third and final category that had been discovered was not as popular or publically accepted by the masses due to its supposedly poor usefulness.

The third category was named Holo Pets or Holo Spirits and it was a type that was just as common as all of the others.

Those that manifested a Holo Pet would gain a small companion or pet taking the form of a very small animal that looked like a projection or hologram made up of nanoparticles.

The main issue was that the combat effectiveness of the Nano Pets had been looked down upon and was seen as not being helpful.

Many who had a Nano Pet were not given priority when it came to being raised to fight against the threats and they were only mainly used as scouts.

Those with the other two categories were able to take on various challenges and grow as they uncovered the methods for them to do so but those of the third category were never given the chance.

Most humans would be judged based on what kind of Nano Spirit they possessed and based on their compatibility or synchronicity rate.

Their usefulness would be included too so when it came to handing out resources that would be used to prioritize the survival of humanity or a certain group, they ended up pushing one aside to make way for the others they saw as being more useful.

The compatibility or synchronicity rate could determine the limitations and future potential of the growth of a person and their Nano Spirit that played a role toward what they could achieve in the future too.

Unfortunately, the potential of a Nano Pet user was deemed as not being something worth exploring since they were already very weak and useless.

Even hunting parties that formed among low-ranking groups of humans often looked down on Nano Pet users who tried to work hard to show that they had something to offer.

In a mountain environment, an older man in his fifties was holding his abdomen where blood was coming from a wound. "Damn them..."

What happened earlier was that he was a member of a team that he had been working with regularly.

He was a Nano Pet user but he was no slacker.

He made sure to grasp some useful skills that would aid him in survival and purchased some other things that would aid him too.

His main duty was to scout using his Nano Pet for the group he was a part of but the moment that something happened that the group could not handle, they chose to abandon him first.

Despite all of his efforts, he was still seen as the most useless and expendable one of the group which caused him to be the first to be abandoned when things became difficult.

He was used so that they could get away safely and he suffered a wound as a result of that.

A small projection of a black cat was running by his side keeping up with his speed as he dragged himself as fast as he could move.

Behind him, there were some rustling noises and thuds made as something was getting closer to him.

He was still being chased by what had wounded him and it was getting closer with each moment.

A fierce look of determination was in his eyes. "I cannot die here. I have to live for them."

Others relied on him and he could not leave them alone in the world.

If he was gone from their lives then it would be just as difficult for them to live in the world just like he had experienced.

There was no way that he could give up just yet and let himself die so easily.
