Chapter 6 - Abandoned 1

It was a cold stormy night and the human settlement was full of activity as the guards maintained their vigilance to protect the residents from being harmed by the dangers outside.

So many had to live under constant fear of the walls being breached one day or just one creature being able to make its way inside.

The buildings they lived in were not enough to keep those creatures out or keep them safe if such a thing did happen.

Those living in the inner upper districts of the human settlement on the other hand were living much better lives.

They managed to build up enough to make their walls to be more sturdy and they had better guards present there to protect them.

The technology that was available to them allowed them to live more comfortable lives too.

There was a very large difference between those who had power and those who did not.

Nothing big had changed in the way humans had developed.

There was a period where there was some unity and equality between all but once the threat did not seem as big anymore, the gap started to widen between different people once more and a lot of the unity had been lost.

Power, status, and wealth played a larger role in life once again.

Which family a person was born into played a huge role in how successful they could become in the future.

There may have been changes made to who was in charge since the previous era but it only changed its form slightly and retained a similar pattern.

If there was one big difference then it was how talent had a lot to do with how those with or without status would be treated.

If they were born with the right talent even if it was small then they would be accepted and raised by their families.

Meanwhile, many children would be hidden away to avoid shame or would be sent to live somewhere else.

In one among many luxurious buildings, a man was pacing back and forth outside of a door.

Screams came from inside which caused the face of the man to show slight concern as his brows furrowed each time he heard the screams.

Time passed as the screams and cries lessened followed by weak and soft cries from inside.

He wanted to enter to see the result but the doctor had not come out to inform him of the status of his wife and children.

His wife was giving birth to the children who would one day inherit their legacy and hopefully further the name of their family to greater heights.

In some cultures, twins were considered as a great blessing while some others could consider it as a curse.

Some twins would be extraordinarily close while others would be the fiercest of rivals.

If that was the case then the twins would be seen as being able to provide support to each other and be able to use their rivalry to make themselves even better.

The father and mother took it as a good sign that they would have twins since their family could become very blessed once the twins were born.

The doctor came out inviting the father inside where the mother held two baby boys in her arms. "They are identical twin boys."

The father and mother showed a great amount of joy before the doctor moved the two children over to a device where they were left to sleep inside.

The device seemed well suited for them to remain inside for a short amount of time but it did not serve such a simple function.

Strange lights began to pass over the bodies of the twins as if scanning for something.

A screen nearby started to show a loading screen displaying the details of the two newborns.

The father asked nervously. "How is it?"

The doctor brought up the data related to each child displaying the first one. "A sword Holo Tool type with Eighty-eight percent talent."

The father and mother showed great joy upon hearing the news. "Great! How great! How about the other? They must share a similar talent too right?"

The doctor brought up the screen showing a complicated expression. "I am afraid... they are a snake Holo Pet type..."

The doctor was about to continue to talk about the talent they possessed but was cut off suddenly by the father who had become colder. "This cannot happen... no... the family cannot let such a shame exist."

He could already foresee how his family would turn out if he allowed it to play out as it should.

The twins would always be compared to each other.

One would be the one with potential and receive everything while the other would be what would bring shame to the family and be seen as nothing.

One twin would be seen as a great hindrance to the other and would always be a stain on them and the family no matter how talented and great they became.

No large family could afford for such things to affect the future of their young heirs who were supposed to be the ones to help them keep their current positions and strengthen them further.

The father took the doctor to the side taking out some of the currency he could get his hands on in the present situation.

He stuffed it into the hands of the doctor away from his wife. "The child will be sent away. Make it happen right away and you should know to keep all of this a secret. Only one child was born on this day, understand?"

His tone was cold and threatening as he said it but he offered some money too.

It was a way of warning them but also providing them with enough motivation to do what he wanted them to do.

The doctor asked. "But... what about your wife?"

The doctor had encountered such situations before where the fathers made such decisions just after the childbirth had happened.

It was usually during times that the mother had yet to form a bond with her baby and the father too so it was usually quicker to sever the connection before a bond was formed when they heard of the news that their child was a Holo Pet type.

When such things took place at the orders of the father when the mother was still weak from childbirth and unable to voice her opinion, it was usually when families could get torn apart and suffer a lot of internal problems.

The father knit his brows as he stated. "She will come to understand. Just do your job and if I hear a word of you running your mouth about this then..."

The doctor felt a cold sweat go down his back. 'This line of work is always so dangerous. Of course, I know how to keep my mouth shut.'

Despite there being a danger in such a line of work, someone needed to do it and it paid quite well.

There were many times when doctors would go missing among those who were usually known for being less discreet about the jobs they took on.

People in higher-up places were usually quick to protect their image so anyone who could threaten that could disappear one day.

It was better to get rid of a loose end rather than let it lurk around, that was the belief of such people but if they could use intimidation and bribery to achieve the same purpose on someone who was known to be tight-lipped then it would solve their problems.

The doctor began to follow the orders right away as the child was taken away to be abandoned on the doorstep of an orphanage on the far outskirts of the city.

One child would come to grow up with love and all kinds of support while another would grow up with very little while living a difficult life.
