Chapter 8 - Awakening

Many incidents continued to cause many children to be abandoned without families.

Many of those children were considered the unlucky ones who were born defective.

There was no absolute way to determine if someone would be born with the qualities needed to awaken a tool or element rather than a pet.

It was usually determined from the moment a person was born and a lot of people who tried to increase the odds of having children with certain aspects would resort to certain methods they believed would work best.

Those methods used were to have many children to increase the odds of them having a good result come out among those born or to match themselves up with someone suitable to try to increase the chances of a child being born with certain qualities.

There were cases where a sword tool user would marry someone with a very similar tool so that the chances of their children inheriting the same type would increase.

Some used such methods to try to increase their family line's synchronicity rate or talents too.

If they were lucky enough then some could cause their children to gain a mutated version from both parents causing them to be able to surpass their parents.

Some others could end up with a poorer mutation of the two resulting in their less useful and faulty tool.

It was not fully determined if they were inherited completely from the genetics of those who birthed them or if there was some other factor at play but there were many who continued to test such things.

If there was anything they had learned then it was that the talents involved were inherited in some way but there would always be some times when rare talents would appear among the most unexpected of places.

It was the same when some very talented places had a large amount of talent gathered but suddenly had a bad batch of talent at one time.

No matter how much could be understood, there were many factors involved that eventually left the result down to luck or probability.

None of the blame could be put on the children who were born under such circumstances yet they were usually the ones to suffer the most.

The world was very cruel to them and they had to face many things that others never had to worry about in their lives.

Many things that such people lacked, many others took for granted.

Not every abandoned child was so lucky to end up somewhere that could raise them right.

Some orphanages were lacking in many areas and even had certain circumstances that involved the staff there being abusive or being involved with siphoning off the little funds that were available for themselves.

All kinds of situations would take place in different locations yet in one place in particular, the environment was slightly better.

The building was not as poor and rundown as many other orphanages that could be found.

The sign looked like it had been put together by the children of the orphanage which seemed to be many childish drawings and paintings of different cute animals.

Some writing on it was more bold among them which was written as 'The Beast Sanctuary'.

Unlike many others who scorned those with Holo Pets, it seemed to be one of the extreme few who did not seem to hold heavy negative views toward those who possessed Holo Pets.

It was more like they had hung up the sign to show their solidarity and that they felt no shame for how the children were born.

There was a little damage to the sign and the outside of the orphanage building but it seemed to be well maintained.

Inside it was a large number of children who varied in age ranges.

They were all gathered around excitedly as a small banner was raised above the doorway.

A boy who looked around thirteen years old was standing at the center of attention of everyone else whether it was the adults or the children.

The boy had an embarrassed look on his face as he pulled up the sleeves of his left arm.

On the upper part of his arm closer to his shoulder was a strange marking that looked like a tattoo. "Look, everyone. This will be the first time I will use it!"

Each marking that appeared on the bodies of those awakening after their thirteenth birthday was a symbol of what their Holo Spirit was.

Depending on what the shape and design of it was, it was slightly easier to identify what it was before it was summoned out.

Since it was usually positioned on the upper arm or somewhere else closer to the upper torso, it was quite easy to keep hidden.

Not everyone would be so willing to reveal their power to others so some usually covered them up while others revealed them more proudly without caring about the consequences of doing so.

On his arm was a small animal that looked like a small monkey with a curled tail.

The moment that he said he would use his Holo Pet, the marking on his arm started to emit a glow.

The marking continued to glow as the nanoparticles were released and quickly took the shape of the form of a very small and cute monkey that was by his feet.

Parts of the monkey seemed almost thorough like it was a holographic projection yet the boy was able to pick it up from where it was and began interacting with it in front of everyone.

The boy declared in front of the crowd as he raised the monkey above his head. "I will be the one to bring glory to the Beast Sanctuary!"

He spoke with a lot of pride and ambition which caused many of the younger children to cheer and offer their congratulations.

The adults came to congratulate him on his awakening and wished him good luck.

They were hopeful and supportive but they did not wish to put too much pressure on the boy.

Like many other children who had awakened over the long history since they had been developing the Beast Sanctuary Orphanage, many had made the same declaration once they awakened.

There were so many who strived to be the ones to prove the others wrong and prove that Holo Pets were not completely useless.

It was better to let them have such ambitions they could work toward rather than having them give up early and accept the poor treatment they would have to face if they just gave up completely.

Even the adults who were helping out to raise the next generation were once children who were raised there and had tried to be the ones to do just that but they found themselves having to give up on such dreams.

Their dreams were not completely gone since they could still pass them on to the next generation.
