Scott wiped the sweat from his brow as he worked alongside Mark in the afternoon sun. They had rode out to the pasture, the sun beating down on their hats. They were fixing to check on the cattle, make sure they were healthy. Scott's mind, though, was elsewhere. He couldn't shake the feeling of betrayal that had been gnawing at him since he found out Mark had known about Nigel's embezzlement.
As they rode, Scott glanced over at Mark, who was gazing out at the horizon, his expression unreadable. "How was school today?" Scott asked, trying to sound casual.
Mark shrugged, his eyes never leaving the horizon. "Okay,I guess."
Scott's gut twisted with frustration. He didn't want to push his son away. Not now, when they were finally starting to rebuild their relationship.
