I stepped out of the police station, my head spun with anger and humiliation. This bastard was trying to ruin my life again. Frame me for a crime I didn't commit? I felt like I'd been punched in the gut.
Helena walked along with me with concern etched on her face. "Chloe, you need to relax. I mean this is so ridiculous."
I shook my head, trying to process the events of the past few hours. "I don't know, Helena. I can't take a moment's worth of breath without something going wrong. I'm gonna find this bastard and make him pay. I don't blame you if you wanna bail out."
She wrapped her arms around me, offering a warm embrace. "We'll get through this. I'm not going anywhere, you're my best friend and I can't let you down. We'll figure out who murdered Vanessa and clear your name."
I nodded, and felt a small sense of comfort. But the anger and frustration still simmered beneath the surface.
