Ned Barker stepped out of his cruiser and onto the quiet suburban street, the flashing lights of the emergency services vehicles casted an eerie glow on the scene before him. The forensics team was already processing the area, their white suits and gloved hands a stark contrast to the tragedy that had unfolded.
He saw Daphne clad in her uniform and hands gloved. Her eyes were heavy as she spoke to Nessa's husband, Roland. Roland sat on the floor of the living room; he was in shock and face pale. It was never easy to see a grieving partner. Ned approached him, his voice gentle but firm. Ned and Daphne exchanged a sad look.
"I'm deeply sorry for your loss, and I know how much she meant to you. We'll do everything possible to investigate."
Nessa and Roland's kids lived out of the State, he would have to make that call.
