Chapter 20: The rare blood type
CRASH!!.
Ava stepped on her brakes. She halted. In her pure heart, she said the same prayers a thousand times. Let it not be Kyle.
She came down from her bike and walked. Taking her steps slowly. Her steps got heavier the moment she saw the motorbike lying on the other side of the road. And a pool of blood. And...a lifeless Kyle lying in that pool of blood.
No. No way. No way! "No!! Kyle!", she shouted his name. It was as though she expected him to wake up the moment she shouted. She knelt beside him holding him in her arms. Tears brimmed her eyes as she tried to fathom what had just happened. She was with him...some minutes ago. He had smiled at her. She'd heard him chuckle. He said that they were going to see a movie. She would've told him how she felt after the movie. When she thought of all these, she began crying. She wailed. This wasn't what she had imagined. This was in the least of her expectations.
The ear-piercing sound of the siren blarred, announcing the arrival of the first responders but, Ava was too engrossed in her sorrow to see what was happening.
"Miss...Miss!", one of the paramedics called out to her to snap her out of her reverie.
"We have to get your friend to the hospital if not this would be the last you'd see him".
As if this was the wake up call she needed, Ava snapped out of it, and let them carry him into the ambulance van. Her clothes were already stained with his blood but she wasn't even bothered. She didn't even notice that it was there.
"Let me go with you", she said clutching the shirt of the lady paramedic.
The young lady looked at her. "Alright".
She got on the van with them, calling his name all the way to the hospital. The police stayed back as they looked over the scene trying to unravel anything out of the ordinary concerning the accident. As the ambulance drove all the way to the hospital, she kept reminding him of the fun things they had planned to do. All the pranks they had planned to play on their friends and families.
When they got to the hospital, the doctor was there to receive them. Kyle was carried on to the stretcher. He was wheeled into the emergency room. Ava was going to go in with him but two nurses held her out, trying to calm her down. When they had done their best, they left her and went to work on the patient.
At that moment, a woman walked up to where Ava stood.
"Ava", she called, her voice solemn.
Ava recognized that voice immediately. That was Kyle's mom. Sh turned to face her.
"Aunt Kathy".
Katherine Compton was dressed in her scrubs, ready to attend to the patient that was brought in. She was the director of Compton's medical center. The hospital was like a family heirloom, passed down from generation to generation.
"What's going on? What happened to you?"
"Aunt", she called, her voice ending in a whimper.
"It's fine. I'll make sure the patient is healed. That's my work".
Without waiting for her to say who the patient was, she strode into the emergency room. On her arrival, she got to see who the patient was. As a mother, she lost composure but her inner mind reminded her that she was a doctor and that her son's life depended on her efforts. With that ado, she began her work.
However, the treatment turned tragic when the patient began losing blood and a blood donation was needed. She sent word to all blood banks in the hospital but none had the blood type around. Not even her.
As the director and the mother of her son, she gave the announcement, sending word across the whole city. Asking for one of the rarest blood type, O negative - 7%.
When Ava heard this, she nearly collapsed. What the hell was going on? She wasn't in for it. She was AB negative. She ran around the hospital, ward after wards asking for the person with similar blood type. Along the way, someone walked up to her.
"Hey there" , the girl said.
Ava's head jerked up. Kaitlyn again!
"What's wrong with you?!", she yelled at her.
"This is a hospital. Don't irritate the patients.
Ava swallowed her anger. "What do you want?"
"Nothing. I'm here for my dad. I'm taking care of him".
"Oh...".
"But, I can be of help".
"With what?"
"I heard that there's a patient in there that needs my blood type".
Ava's eyes widened. "You've a similar blood type?", she asked as she tried her best to extinguish the flame of jealousy that was fanning within her.
"Is the patient related to you?"
Ava nodded. "It's Kyle".
Kaitlyn widened her eyes. "What?!"
"Please help him", she pleaded.
Kaitlyn smirked in her head. She gave a start at the opportunity that was before her.
"I will give him the blood but under a condition".
Ava grimaced in anger. "Not at this point too Kaitlyn!"
"You probably don't need it. If he dies, just know that it was you who killed your bestie out of your own jealousy".
Ava clenched her fists. "Give it to him. I'll do whatever it is that you want ".
