Chapter 21: I don't have something like that

Two minutes later, a donor arrived in front of the operating room. At the news, the nurses came to bring the donor in their faces filled with gratitude and appreciation. The surgery was completed at ten that night. Mrs Compton walked out of the OR wheeling Kyle out on a stretcher with the help of five nurses and a doctor. There, she met Ava seated on the bench, her eyes closed as she was fast asleep. Mrs Compton's eyes brimmed with unshed tears at the sight of a sleeping Ava.

"Oh baby", she muttered under her breath walking towards her. She tapped her a little, calling her name.

Slowly, Ava opened her eyes, her senses taking in the scene in front of her. When she recognized Mrs Compton in front of her, she gasped and spranged to her feet.

"Aunt Kathy", she called looking behind her. And there he was...the person she was looking for. She ran to the stretcher holding the rails.

"Kyle", she called as tears plopped onto the sheets.

"Wheel him to the ward", Mrs Compton's voice came, strong and filled with authority. Her assistants complied, and took him away. "Ava baby", Mrs Compton called her when they were alone.

"Aunt Kathy, will he be ok?"

"I'm his mother and I conducted the surgery. He'll obviously be fine".

Ava sighed and clenched her fists.

"That accident was fatal aunt. The truck was merciless".

"Don't worry. He'll be ok".

"I believe".

Mrs Compton guided her as she walked towards Kyle's ward. He was alone when they walked in. Sleeping. Sleeping deeply.

"Aunt when is he gonna wake?"

" I don't know dear. But I know he's gonna wake".

"This is tough".

"I'm here with you, so it won't be tough".

"Thanks aunt".

"I'm so grateful to the donor who sent help".

"Oh...", was Ava's unstable reply. She grimaced when she thought of that donor.

"She was helpful. I'm really grateful to her for her courage. Not everyone would do that for someone they don't know".

"Yeah, she's really brave ".

Ava cursed her, deep down in her heart. She hated the fact that she was the one out of the 1 million inhabitants of California. But, she had to make a choice. She had to do it for him.

"I'll leave you to him", Mrs Compton said and walked out of the room.

Ava looked at her bestie. The best guy she had ever met and would ever meet. The guy she had fallen in love with. The one whom she had taken that poison for. Kyle Compton.

The next day, Ava was preparing to go to the hospital. Her mom walked into her room and met her in her rush hour.

"My baby...where are you off to at this early hour?"

"The hospital ".

Mrs Bateman almost choked. "The hospital? Who's the patient?"

Ava heaved a tired sigh. She slumped into her bed her eyes tearing up. "It's... Kyle".

Mrs Bateman's eyes widened at what Ava had said, covering her mouth with her hands.

"What happened to my baby boy?", her voice quivered.

"He got into an accident".

"Oh my goodness", she muttered, her voice shaky. "My cutie pie".

"He's in a better condition now. I want to go see him".

"Sure baby. I'll be behind you", she said amidst tears as she scampered for her room to get ready for the hospital.

Ava arrived at the hospital at quarter past eight. She walked to his ward and met the doctor taking care of him and checking his vitals. After the handsome male doctor was done, he turned around to leave, that was when he noticed the visitor.

"You're quite early, Miss", he said with a smile.

"Yeah. He needs company".

"Yeah he does. Do take good care of him".

"Sure".

The doctor left, his crocs clicking noiselessly against the tiled floor.

Ava walked to the bed. She dropped her bag which she had brought on the bedside table. As she watched him sleep, he realized just how handsome her bestie is. Those perfect lips, those emerald green eyes...oh, how much she missed them!

Later into the day, Ava's mom arrived at the hospital. She met her daughter and Kyle. When she saw the handsome guy, looking all pale and ashen, she teared up. Mrs Compton also came around to check up on him. She met Mrs Bateman.

"Oh Katherine", Mrs Bateman called as she hugged her friend.

"Clara",

"I'm so sorry about what happened. This is too much to take".

"We'll be fine".

"For how long will he have to stay here?", Mrs Compton asked

"Don't know, probably a week should be it".

Mrs Bateman sighed. "That's too long".

"He can handle it, he's that strong".

"Yeah", Mrs Bateman concurred stroking Mrs Compton's back gently.

For a week, Kyle lay motionless on that narrow bed, fighting for his dear life. However, he wasn't alone in that fight. Ava was there, alongside Daisy and Alex who came by to accompany her as well. They read him novels, sang some crazy songs, and played some games. This was done inorder to liven up the atmosphere and also, to keep Ava in her sunshine mode.

On the beginning of the new week, Ava came alone to the hospital. She walked to the ward as usual her heart anticipating his awakening. When she opened the door, her eyes were marveled at the scene that had greeted her

He was awake.

Alive and well. Looking as handsome as always. The paleness couldn't hide his beauty.

"Kyle", she muttered under her breath, her lips widening in a smile.

"Hey Kyle, you need to eat something. Your mom said you should eat. You don't have to disobey her", a voice said catching Ava's attention. That voice was the most familiar voice she had ever heard in her life. She'd never forget it.

"I'll eat it later".

Ava walked to the bed, holding the railings of the bed as she looked at Kyle.

"Hey best, you're awake".

Kyle turned and looked at her. He arched a brow at her and turned to look at Kaitlyn.

"Do you know her? Why's she here?"

Kaitlyn blinked. She looked at Ava and then at Kyle. She didn't need a prophet to help her understand what was going on. However, she didn't want to jump into conclusions as she tried to remind him of Ava.

"Hey Kyle, it's your bestie, Ava".

"I don't have something like that".

That was a wake up call for Ava. She paled at his words. He couldn't... remember her.
