Chapter 24: Alone
Ava ran away from that scene. She couldn't believe it. She wasn't one to have nightmares but this one was the worst. She wasn't even sleeping. This one was happening while she was awake.
Mrs Compton ran off to find Ava followed by Daisy and Alex. The ward fell into a pin-drop silence. Kyle leaned into the bed, his gaze turning to his mom.
"Mom, what's wrong?"
"Nothing. It's just...you might lose something so precious to you".
Mrs Compton didn't wait for his retort and walked out of the ward.
Kaitlyn looked at Kyle who was clenching and unclenching his fist.
"Is she that important that I have to remember her?", he asked rhetorically but Kaitlyn was there to give him the reply that he wanted.
"I believe that if it was someone important, you would remember that person".
"I know right?"
"Yes".
Kaitlyn smiled at the turnout of things. The heavens were really in her side. She never thought that this would happen. But...it happened.
She did a dance twirl in her mind a thousand times as she thought of everything.
"I heard that you were the blood donor".
"Oh", Kaitlyn said her mind coming to present.
"Yes, it was me".
"Thanks for saving my life".
"It's ok. You needed it ".
"Don't mind all those people. I just hope that I don't have to see this kind of drama again in my life ".
Kaitlyn chuckled at his words and said nothing.
Ava sat on one of the benches at the park, clutching her side bag tightly.
"Ava" someone called.
She turned around to see Alex behind her. Daisy joined seconds later.
"Alex"
"I'm sorry for the shit that's going on right now".
"I don't know what to do. I'm really scared. What if he doesn't remember at all?"
"Don't worry Ava, he'd remember you. You're the closest person to him".
"That's the more reason he should remember!"
"Allow him to take his time. He'd eventually remember. Let's be positive about this".
Ava nodded. She had to be positive about this. Daisy say beside her, hugging her from the side.
"Don't forget, we're here for you too".
"Thanks", she appreciated amidst tears.
Mrs Bateman arrived at where they were. She looked at her daughter, tears brimming her eyes. She knew how close those two were. She couldn't imagine how painful it must be for her daughter to experience this. This was worse than heartbreak.
The next few days, Ava kept coming to the hospital. To see if he would remember her, but he didn't. Whenever he opened his mouth to talk to her, it was laced with anger and unconcealed hatred. However, she wasn't one to mind.
It was a new week, and the whole school was bustling at the resumption of their school's god, Kyle Compton. Most of the students were anticipating the drama that would ensue in the coming days.
Ava had hopes for this new week as she resumed. That morning when she was done dressing, she came to where she had parked her motorbike. She was about to ride on it but then decided against it. She couldn't ride it, not without her bestie. And for the first time in her life, she had to commute to school. It was a lonely ride, though there were people. He wasn't by her side, anymore.
