Chapter 22: A total stranger
Ava paled at his words. She couldn't believe that Kyle had said that to her. But she didn't give up, she still tried to talk to him.
"Hey Kyle, is this a prank you learned from the underworld?", she said with a chuckle that sounded bitter to the ear.
Kyle clenched his fists, as he got irritated by her presence.
"Kaitlyn, what's she doing here? Do you know her?"
" She's our classmate. Don't you remember? She's Ava Bateman ".
"Are you two trying to play some tricks on me? I don't know her".
Ava shook her head, not accepting what she was witnessing. This wasn't what she imagined when he woke up. This wasn't even in her mind. How could he be saying such words?
Without further ado, she dashed out of the ward and ran off to the director's office. She knocked hastily and walked in.
"Ava", Mrs Compton called the moment she noticed Ava's presence.
"Aunt Kathy, there's a problem".
"What's it?"
"It's Kyle".
Mrs Compton stood from her seat the moment her son was mentioned.
"What happened to him?"
"I don't know. He doesn't seem to know who I am. He looks at me like a total stranger".
"Crap", the woman said and walked out of her office with Ava next to her. Ava's heart was hammering in her chest. She didn't expect this to happen.
In five minutes, the duo was already in Kyle's ward. Kaitlyn was helping him eat when they walked in.
Kyle arched a brow the moment his mother walked in. When he noticed Ava behind her, his brows furrowed. He hated the sight of her.
"What's she doing here?", he asked, his voice laced with visible unhappiness.
"This is Ava, your best friend".
"Mom not you too! How can she be manipulating you too? You're Mrs Compton".
"No, no", she muttered as she shook her head. She was also shocked. She couldn't believe it.
"I'll take you for an MRI scan".
"Mom, I'm fine".
"Listen to me! You're doing this scan!"
Kyle swallowed the anger that was brewing within him as he sent Ava a hate glare. Mrs Compton called the attention of the doctors in charge of the scan and Kyle was taken out of his ward to be checked. Ava was about to follow them, but was held back by someone.
"Hey there Ava", Kaitlyn greeted, with that smile that was signature to her.
"What's the problem?", she asked, her anger almost bursting out.
"We had a pact, remember?"
"It's still vivid in my mind. I keep my promises".
"That's a good thing to hear. You better try your best not to parade yourself around him".
"That's no longer a problem for you. He doesn't even remember who I am".
Kaitlyn chuckled. "He obviously doesn't. But still, I need you to behave yourself ".
"You have my word".
Mrs Bateman walked in on them.
"Ava", she called, taking a glance at the girl next to her daughter.
"Mom", Ava called hugging her mom. She held her tightly as if her life depended on it.
Kaitlyn watched this scene with unconcealed jealousy. Ava had everything. Lawn Tennis, loving parents and good friends. But she had none of them. She was going to take everything away, one by one. She walked out, leaving those two behind.
