"Hey, Magnus! Can you hold this for me?" A shout broke out my thought. Looking over I saw one of the last older kids holding a hammer while pointing at a wooden ply.
"Sure Able," I replied and moved to hold the ply while Able nailed it on the broken part of the floor.
While holding the ply I couldn't help but think about the problem of gathering the SEV. From what I know there are three ways to gather SEV but two of them are impossible for the current me which leaves me with the third and last option. Even that is not easy but that one is easiest.
And that method is killing living beings and converting their souls into SEV. To be honest this would have been the hardest if not for being able to kill any living that has a soul which includes even insects.
But the SEV collected will depend on the quality and the strength of the soul so that means killing a mosquito won't give me much while killing a human will give me enough to significantly raise my stats.
"Magnus we're done here, can you go and report to Madam." While thinking about a solution for my SEV gathering problem Able interrupted me again.
Suppressing the pang of annoyance at the disturbance I nodded at him and moved to inform the old hag while resuming my thoughts.
Reaching her office I stopped my steps as I heard her talking with someone. Feeling a bit curious I placed my ear at her door. Who knows I might hear some cliche fantasy conspiracy which will help me make some major gains. Hehe!
"So the new guy quiet too..." I heard the old hag's voice.
The one talking to her released a loud sigh, probably also nodding as I heard the old coot speak again.
"Why don't you hire some adult?"
"It's not that I don't wanna, but no grown-up would work for what I'm offering." Finally, I heard the other occupant's voice and it didn't take me long to know the owner— the meat shop owner which also made me realise what they were talking about.
According to original Magnus memories, the meat shop owner is having trouble with hiring a butcher ever since his previous one died a few months back. The problem is he's only offering the same amount he used to pay his previous butcher who was an old man. The old man probably didn't have much need so he was satisfied with the wage but the same cannot be said about the young adult who have more needs and can do hard labour to earn better wages.
That leaves the meat shop owner to hire children, but this also causes problems as innocent children can't get used to killing animals quickly and end up leaving the job.
"So are you thinking of raising the wage?" Old hag inquired.
"Not in a million years. I'll butcher them animals myself like I use tha" The meat owner scoffed. I heard the old coot say something else but I stopped hearing as I thought about this perfect opportunity.
Am I some kind of son of Heaven? I mean seriously ever since I reincarnated I've been awfully lucky. Like seriously! First I want to leave my current situation Erica told me about the Royal Academy. Then I wanted more information she told me about Blaze who came to the orphanage a few months back. And now I want to collect souls a perfect opportunity came in the shape of a butchering job.
Is my reincarnation also a lucky incident instead of some Omnipotent being doing like I originally thought? Like the System just randomly dropping from the sky and landing on my head?
"Nah…" I shook my head in amusement and then knocked on the door.
"Who!" Old hag asked loudly to which I opened the door and replied meekly.
"I-It's me, I came here to tell you that we have repaired the broken floor of the common room.
"Is that so? Thank you for informing me, sweetie." The old hag replied softly, putting on an act before the meat shop owner. "You can go now, sweetie."
I did not and seeing me waiting the old hag questioned.
"Do you need anything else, sweetie?"
"Yes! I-I heard what Mr. shop owner was saying an-and I can help with the job so…" I began but could already feel old hag's gaze that promised pain but I continued. "…so I could pay for the potion."
I let my words hang as the silence settled inside the room which was broken by the loud laugh.
"Bhahaha!!! Nice words brat! A man should own 'eir mistakes no matter how small. Say what? Ya come to my shop morrow morn and I'll show ya the ropes." The shop owner offered but I countered.
"Can I start today?" I said not wanting to waste time gathering SEV.
"Magnus!" I heard the old hag speak my name sternly, still in her act.
"Ye-yes"
"You sure you want to do this, I don't want you to quit mid-way like others and become an inconvenience for Mr Billy."
I looked into the old hag's eyes and spoke with conviction.
"Yes! I want to do this and I won't quit. I-I don't to go hun-"
"Okay fine… I'll let you do the job." The old hag abruptly spoke cutting me off. Realising what I was going to say.
Suppressing the victorious smirk creeping on my face I nodded my head.
"Bah! Ya want to start working from today? Better for me then. Let's go! Sister Lia, I will send the brat before the night meal" The meat shop owner—Billy said.
"But he hasn't eaten lunch yet." Old hag spoke with a worried tone as if she really cared.
God this woman can do some serious acting, even I would have believed her if I didn't know better. Luckily Billy came to my rescue.
"No worry! I treat the brat with 'ome tasty meal." With nothing else stopping us, Billy and I left the orphanage for his shop.
Thinking bout it I don't think I could get any better job than this to quickly gather SEV without endangering my life. Good thing that this world doesn't have any law preventing child labour or it would be a hundred times harder to acquire this job.
Well, I could always go with the path of insect genocider.
