Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8- THE "PRESENT" PART 3

Jason POV

Well, that couldn't have gone better. I comment while watching the fight through our shared vision. With each of my pawns dying, I feel a sense of weakness gnawing on me, their essence getting lost between heaven and earth. I should have experimented more, but time was not on my side.

Taking down Dmetri and Felix in exchange for my two pawns, the long-distance tracking gift will be handy for the upcoming plans. The annoying bitch Esme is dead. Good riddance. I wanted Edward dead too, but he escaped. No worries; I will get him next time.

For now, three of my pawns are going towards "La Push" to kill Jacob. It won't be easy, but with the shared shield among my pawns, they have a good chance of killing him, especially now, when he should be sealed in Plasters. The wolves must be aware of the chaos in the city, but their absence means they have their own problems.

My pawns will cover their scent with a shield, act like silent assassins, take the target down, and then kill as many new wolves as possible. Maybe the essence of wolves will surprise me. I lick my lips in excitement while I give my pawns basic commands.

"Hmm," I frown at seeing the patrolling wolves sprinting here; maybe their shield is not enough to cover their whole scent. I frown harder, seeing it howling and alerting others. A change of plans: I direct one of the pawns to use the shield to its full extent, his scent almost disappearing; the other two become naked targets, their scents fully unleashed on the wolf territory; and I see the patrolling wolves crazily sprinting and howling.

I command the two pawns to cause a massacre, and they do just that. Many who have just started phasing fall under their vicious claws, and a few that manage to transform let out mournful howls as their hearts are crushed.

A giant black wolf tears apart one of my pawns, and the other one is taken down by the pack members. I let out a grunt of pain, the pain of essence loss taking its toll on me, but I force myself to focus as the most important step is now, through the shared vision, I see a garage full of bikes and motor parts, a little distance away, a house enveloped in silence, unlike the chaotic surroundings. Through the shared sense, I hear a strong heartbeat. I instinctively know this is my target, so I command the pawn to silence this heartbeat.

The pawn rushes in, not bothering to be quiet since the wolves are coming here, probably to check on their recovering member. The pawn slides in through the window, and there I see him, Jacob Black, sleeping, not even aware that his sweetheart is dead. Now he will follow in her footsteps in his sleep. How poetic! The pawn wrenches his head off before crushing it.

"Aaah," I let out a moan, feeling the wolf essence merging with my own; their essence, though different than vampires, feels just as good. Because of the huge distance, a lot of essence was lost; I only received a quarter.

"Bang"

Jacob's house gets demolished as wolves dive in head first. I command the pawn to run, but I know it will never get out of their territory alive, and I turn out right as a huge paw covered in black hair stomps on the pawn's chest, creating a crater below. The remaining wolves surround their Alpha. I see anger but also some relief in Sam's eyes, probably because Jacob is dead, so no one will compete with him for the position of Alpha.

I don't give any commands, knowing it's futile. The pawn just lets out a smirk, and the last thing I see is the sharp teeth of the wolf before the shared vision darkens.

"Ugh," I fall from the tree branch I was sitting on. The backlash of my pawn's death brought greater damage than I thought.

As I struggle to get up, I feel my shield rapidly weakening, to the point where anyone would be able to find me. Not only my shield, but also other stolen gifts, get weaker.

"Fuck!" I let out a curse as I ran to consume essence. Luckily, there is a camping site nearby. I make haste, knowing that any tracker would be able to find me, and the fortune teller in Cullens might even find out my current location exactly.

If they find me in my current condition, I will definitely die.

I let out a sigh as I saw a distant campfire, knowing my meal was here.
