ESME POV
I remember how Carlisle and I worked together to design this place, our haven, one away from all the chaos of the city, where we would stay with our children in tranquility.
Now, because of one decision, all that is history. And now, seeing Alice in a deranged state after her vision, I really want to kill that boy.
Right when I am thinking that, I get tackled to the ground before my vision stabilizes, and I realize my head is no longer attached to my body. The last thing I see before my skull is destroyed is Edward lunging towards me.
Then my vision darkens, and I feel relieved that I will soon be with Carlisle.
Jasper POV
I see Esme dying with a content smile. I shook my head. She left herself open; no one could have saved her. Her body disappears bit by bit in thin air.
Their every move seems far from finesse, yet they seem to get the job done in the easiest way, like they know each of us well, our specialties and our weaknesses alike. As I struggle to comprehend how, I see Edward going berserk and attacking the three in a frenzy; this is unlike him, even if he wants revenge for Bella.
One of the vampires manages to wrench out one of Edward's hands before Emmett steps in and saves him, but he pushes Emmett back before re-engaging with the vampires.
"Ah." I catch a whiff. All three of them smell like Bella, like they carry her essence. If vampires turned by Jason can inherit some of his abilities, then
"Get back from them." I screamed to alert them of the freezing technique, but nothing had happened till now. Maybe they can't use that ability; other than being stronger than average vampires and maybe having part of Bella's shield, they aren't much different.
I focus on sensing their emotions, but I can't feel anything; it's like they don't have any emotion, or more like, don't have free will. My brain is running at lightning speed while trying to defend Alice from the enemy and also trying to come up with a logic for this kind of puppet feeling from them.
Emmett and Rosalie manage to take one of them down. Before one of them lunges towards Alice, I manage to tackle it down, throwing it through several trees in the process. One armed Edward crushes its skull, but the third one escapes. We decide to regroup with the Volturi guards and also check the situation in Forks City.
The combination of Jane and Alec working wonders, with their powerful gifts, already taking down two vampires, but Dmetri is dead; the best tracker of Volturi is dead; no way Aro would like that.
Alec has a sensory-deprivation gift that can affect anyone within a range of several hundred meters.
You could be burned alive and you won't feel anything; how terrifying! No wonder they took both down, but at the cost of Dmetri. Wait, the big guy Felix is absent too; he probably died somewhere then.
So Jason sacrificed his two pawns for two Volturi guards. His pawns are no joke. I looked around while cradling Alice, and several houses were razed to the ground. Several dozen people died, but the twins did a good job cleaning up. This can probably be blamed on some terrorist groups.
"Huh." I feel a movement in my arms when, all of a sudden, I am kissed hard and a pair of hands clasp around my neck tightly.
"Alice. I hug her back tightly.
"What happened?" I ask her.
"I don't know; I was trapped in a dark place, all alone," she replied.
I patted her back to calm her down, kissing her face to cheer her up. Finally, it works.
"Do you see now why taking him down is so important?" Jane asks.
I remain quiet, with Alice in my arms,Edward nowhere to be seen, and Emmett and Rosalie holding each other's hands.
"Did you get all three?" Alec asks
"No, one of them got away," Alec hisses in anger.
"They sacrificed themselves just so they could take Dmetri down; Felix was just a bonus; they had a proper plan; even now that we are in complete darkness, how many more pawns are left? Where will he strike next?" Alec says this while crushing a half-lived human to death.
I frown at seeing it, but I know my priority is Alice now; nothing else matters.
"We will need backup; we are going back to Italy, Jane says.
Alec nods at Jane, and the twins whizz off.
I can't help but feel scared. Even while I was human,I never felt this scared. Alice is fine now, but what if she dies next time because of a vision? Even now, I can see that she is suffering backlash for spying on the future.
While I was worrying about the future, I heard several wolf howls from the territory of the Uley Pack's area. Did Jason's pawn attack them? Their condition isn't the best now; after the war with newborns, many wolves got injured, and many new ones have started phasing, so their territory will be full of chaos.
I share a look with Emmett and Rosalie before we whizz off.
