Chapter 11 - The encounter

Aurora

"Are you sure about this?" Mom said as she purred my coffee. I nodded and checked the card again. "It looks authentic. If what he was saying is true then he is probably the manager of the company."

The name on the business card the man gave me was Frostbite Reality. No one has ever seen or known the real owner of the mysterious company since it had been established. There was news that the owner had died a long time ago. Frostbite Reality is known for making cars, one of the few car companies and it grows every day.

When the man at the restaurant gave me the card, it was hard to believe he was from the company but something tells me he is either a manager or a distant relative to the owner of the company.

I wore my fedora hat and adjusted my gown. I finished the coffee in one gulp and bid Mom goodbye as I set out into the street. The weather looked favourable, a perfect day to get a job.

I have no training or experience when it comes to cars but I just really feel like I would have the job. When I went to the bus stop, the last bus was already leaving. I ran after it but the sharp pain in my back couldn't allow me to chase it down.

It's been days and the injury seems to be getting worse. I have been hiding it from Mom, I don't want her to panic. I lost the bus, I guess I have no other choice than to wait for a taxi.

It came sooner than expected as if it knew I might be running late. "Frostbite," I said to the driver. He looked at me through the mirror and laughed. "Are you going for an appointment?" he asked.

"I have an interview."

He laughed and faced his front. His smile was full of sarcasm and disdain. I rolled my eyes and looked out the window at the passers-by.

"I heard it's been a century since anyone has been employed in the company. I doubt you've got any chance but I wish you the best."

Of course, I knew that facet too, but something just encouraged me to give it a try. He dropped me in front of the company and wished me luck before leaving. I sighed then went in.

The receptionist was a very old woman, evidence that the people hadn't changed for a long time. "Are you Aurora?" the woman asked with a bright smile. "He has been expecting you. Take your left to the elevator and go down to the top floor. Someone will meet you up there."

"Thank you."

I was nervous through the elevator ride and didn't know what post I was applying for, it was all too sudden. When I got up, I walked in and another older lady led me to the office. Indeed, I met the man there.

Guilt filled my stomach for thinking he was a jerk when I first met him. I sat down and placed my bag on the table. "You are a bit late."

His voice rang a familiar bell in my ears. I dimmed my eyes and tried to remember but it was all in a blur.

"Are you alright?" He asked, snapping me out of my thoughts. I blinked and gave him a warm smile. "Ye I am fine. You told me to come around for a job. Although I do not know why you were so generous I want to thank you for this opportunity. I have heard about this company a lot and from what I have heard and seen, they all look true. Pardon me for this but, are you the manager or you are a distant relative of the owner? It's a big company and rumours have it that the owner is dead."

He dropped his pen and looked at me. "Take a deep breath, one at a time. Are you that excited?"

Perhaps I spoke too much. He brought out a file and extended it to me. "What is this?"

I took it and looked through it. It's a contract and everything is stated there. I rued it and signed it without hesitating. "There you go."

He smiled and signed it too then kept it under his deck. "You are hired."

I looked at him, with a brim face. "What do you mean I am hired? We haven't spoken about the position."

"Then you didn't read through your contract. You would be my assistant, both at work and at home. Your daily revenue would be $3000 if that is okay for you and you can demand more if you want. Anything you see or hear in the company stays in the company and you would be more of a bodyguard, you have to be with me every time."

Everything he said was cool and hard to believe…or should I say, too good to be true. I could have changed the amount I am being paid and all I have to do is be his assistant and follow him everywhere he goes.

"Then we have a deal. When do I start working?" I asked.

"Tomorrow. Be as early as a waking nightingale." I nodded with a huge smile. He dismissed me and I went back to the receptionist. Looking like she already knew what happened, she waved me off. I saw a text message from Mike. He wanted to meet up to clear things up.

Down at Lilly's, I shared a bottle of wine with him at a reserved table for two. His white shirt and tie made him look more than who he used to be. The grey suit was no joke. In more than a month, he looked more attractive than he had ever been. He is in the past, I thought. I am never going back to him.

"Aurora. You are looking good." His smile was brighter than usual. "You too."

"About our break up…" I didn't expect him to dig straight into the topic. "I want to let you know that I am sorry for hurting you and that man…I don't want to see him again."

"What man?"

"Your boyfriend."

I laughed and placed my cup on the table. "What do you mean? I have not been seeing anyone apart from you and when I saw you with Isabella, I went straight home. You have been thinking too much for a handsome man like you."

He looked confused but he let it off. "We should start afresh. I…I miss you Aurora. I haven't been myself for a while."

I smiled, I had waited a long time for him to come back to his senses. "What about Isabella?"

"She left with her family to Miami. I want to be with you again Aurora."

I sipped my wine. "I would think about it. I will get back to you tomorrow when I am done with work."

His brows drew up. "You got a job?" I nodded. He wasn't so happy about it. I checked the time. "I need to get back home now, I have some things to do. I will meet you tomorrow."

I stood up and he did the same. He pecked me slightly on my cheek. My body froze for a second and eased out with a shock that I hadn't felt for a long time.

When I got home, I checked the wound on my back. Turning my back to the mirror and checking the mirror over my shoulder, I saw it clearly…it had vanished. No scars, no evidence that I was ever injured.
