Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 – Building a House

Third person POV

Over 20 minutes had passed, and it's time for Nate to take the dough, now a whole wheat bread, out of the oven and showed it to his people. Upon seeing the hot food, Sati, Laura, and others are amazed by its looks.

"So this is bread?" Sati commented.

"Yes, the simple version," Nate responded. "You can take a piece of it to taste it for yourself."

And so, each of them takes a small piece to taste it.

Then, as they taste and eat it, they were allured by its simple flavor despite not being sweet.

"This is so good," one of the tribespeople muttered.

"I never tasted that good," Laura commented.

It was so good that they wanted more, but some of them wanted to make more as well.

"Sure, if you have the ingredients," Nate replied positively and nicely.

"Teach us more about your human ways!" Sati said to him.

"Woah, woah, I can't do all of them in one day," Nate responded back.

"We'll do one, two, or even three each day, okay?"

"Anything for our leader," Sati replied.

This causes Nate to smile nervously, thinking, "This is more difficult than I thought."

Later at night, all of them, including those who farm that day, are now gathering at the center of the settlement having a communal dinner. Their meal consisted of roasted boar meat, wheat porridge, and some fruits. The evening was quiet. Zeke and Hale are there, too.

"So, if you're a noble," Sati said to Nate while chewing his meat, "do you enjoy the privileges of being one?"

"No, not at all," Nate replied with a sad-down attitude. "My father and older half-brother hated me. The only ones who are sympathetic to me are my mother, my younger half-sister, and some of the household staff, including my horse carriage driver."

"Okay, why?" Hale asked.

"That's because...," Nate responded as he looks at them, "...I am an illegitimate child."

This shocks the rest.

"What? Illegitimate?"

"They're so selfish!"

"Yeah, and my mother died when I was 10," Nate continued on, "and my older half-brother, Hertzel, is very selfish and only thinks about himself and his skills as a hero."

He then felt in anger and continued on, "He's the only one he can go to the prestigious Langton Royal Academy, and I don't!"

He then tosses a stick into the fire in anger, "It's not fair!"

Sati and the others then understood Nate's feelings, and Laura said to him, "We understand. But, on the bright side, you don't have to go that school if you're already that smart."

"Yeah, make sense," Nate replied calmly, before resumed eating his meal.

"Good thing there are some people other than them who cared for you," Zeke responded.

Glancing at Zeke, Nate replied, "Thanks."

After dinner, Nate stand up. "Tomorrow, we will build a house!"

They then don't understand what a house is, so one of them asked, "What is that?"

"It's like a tent," Nate responded back positively, "but bigger and much sturdier than that."

"Is that made of animal skin?" Hale asked.

"No, most of them made out of wood," Nate replied, "while others are made out of bricks."

"They can make them using bricks?" Laura asked.

"Yes," Nate replied back.

"So we need wood for that?" Sati asked back.

"Yes, you guys cut trees, right?" Nate responded while sitting down on a fallen log.

"Mostly the Undead cat tribe does that job," Sati answered back, "but anyone as humans can do that."

"Oh, okay then," Nate replied. "Let's cut some trees tomorrow morning then. Do we have any axes for that?"

"Yes, Nate-sama, we have some," Sati replied positively.

"Okay, that'll be great."

Nate then thought, "I luckily read that book."

And so, the next morning, at the edge of the forest nearby from the Undead lion tribe, Sati and two other Undead lions, as humans, are now chopping down a few trees while Nate is overseeing the project with Zeke and Laura. Then, once the part of the log was eaten up, the three Undead lions pushed them so the trees would fall to the ground, producing a loud thud. After that, Sati turned to Nate and asked, "So, is this enough?" Observing the estimated amount of wood from the five fallen trees, Nate decided to start with five trees so he responded, "Yes, let's start with five first."

Shortly thereafter, some from the Undead cat tribes, under the leadership of an Undead grey cat named Julie, began to cut the logs from the rest of the trees as humans alongside Sati's two lions, and this also includes the thick, usable tree branches. They used axes. After that, they chopped them into planks and some for the framework of the house according to Nate's instructions and descriptions.

Once that was done, Nate said to them, "Good, all we need is nails to put them together. Do any of you use it?"

"Yes, mostly for stretching dead animal skins for tents and making tables and chairs," Laura responded. "Those were needed?"

Nate then nodded, "Yes."

And so, Laura went to get some nails from her tent.

Later, once Laura went and came back with a bowl of medium-sized nails, Nate began building up a small house by digging up the foundation for the four pillars, before putting the four wooden pillars of equal length into the holes. After that, he began to put the rest of the skeleton of the house with Sati's assistance as a lion for an extra height as the rest watches so they could learn. He was sturdy and can handle twice the weight of Nate. Nate also includes a space for the door.

After that, the skeleton of the house was finished, and all that is needed to put are the walls and the rooftop. But, Nate wants to keep it simple and easy by preferring a flat roof instead of a typical gable roof common in humans' houses. So, he used the remaining wood to make the walls and a flat roof.

And so, in just less than two hours, Nate had constructed a small, simple, shed-like house for the Undead animals to see so they could learn how to do it.

"And this is how you make a simple house," he said to them.

They were amazed to see that strange, complex structure.

"So that's a house?" Sati asked.

"Yes, but this is the simple version," Nate responded. "There a lot of variety of it, and varies by size, type, and function or purpose."

"How about a door?" Laura asked.

"I don't have what we humans call hinges," Nate unfortunately replied back, "but a simple hanging cloth in the doorway will do the trick for privacy."

"Oh, okay," Hale get it now.

At this point, Zeke thought, "He's applying what he had learned while at the same time, made some improvised parts as substitutions."

He felt that his leader is going fast in development despite being a young boy.

After Hale and Laura hung a simple cloth above the door way using nails, Nate, Sati, Zeke, Hale, and Laura went in to see how they feel being in an actual house.

"Wow, I felt a bit of coolness here," Laura commented.

"Yes, and it's cozy here, too," Nate responded.

"It's quite dark here," Sati commented. "What we see at an abandoned brick structure is a few holes into the walls."

"Oh, that would be windows," Nate replied back. "That can be open to let air and sunshine in, and closed for privacy at any time."

"I see."

"Don't worry, we'll make holes once we had the right tools."

"What tools?" Hale asked.

"That would be a saw," Nate replied. "That's what we humans used to cut planks of wood."

"Oh, I think we had one from a dead human we hunted for food in the past," Sati responded.

"Okay, so you used it to make tables or something?" Nate asked.

"Yes, but we wanted to make more than that."

"I see. Okay, we'll do that tomorrow. For now, let's focus with the houses. Do any of you want to live in one of them?"

This causes them to glance at one another for a few seconds.

Eventually, they went to their fellow Undead animals to ask them that question and moments later, one-fourth of them said that they wanted to make a house for themselves, causing Nate to be chagrined by the demand for housing.

But, Zeke steps in to help by calling out some from his tribe to come and help cutting trees to build more houses. This boosts the number of laborers for the number of houses to be needed.

And so, for the rest of the day, together, they built over 11 small houses of the similar style and size. Nate also planned out a simple street system to turn Sati's settlement into a small village. Of course, he would not take the land on which the farmlands are on. At the same time, the rest of the Undead Dragon tribe also decided to copy Nate's act of modernization and modernize a bit by replacing half of their tent homes with small wooden houses, with George's approval.
