Chapter 40 - Learning (2)

Kane wanted to get the hell out of there, but since it would be a waste to leave the corpse of the snake behind, he decided to accept the risks. It was clear that he and Jacob had done most of the work. Still, Kane only cut one-third of the snake using his spear… surprisingly, cutting the flesh was relatively easy now that the snake was dead, so Kane didn't have to waste too much energy.

Although Kane wasn't that experienced in cutting the monster's flesh, he still managed to separate the hide from the meat that he could eat. Thanks to his strength as a goblin, he did all that in five minutes. Ten minutes later, he had finished eating twenty kilograms of the snake.

(Congratulations! You ate an enemy. You received two reincarnation points.")

(Congratulations! You unlocked a new monster. You received five reincarnation points.")

It would take a while for him to be able to use the hide as a clothing or protective gear. However, Kane still organized it in a single package, all the hide, and decided to carry it with him. However, the very moment Kane left that area in flames, he was followed by Jacob and Emma… he was too busy to notice. Still, they also had eaten the snake and secured the hide. Surprisingly, the wounds in Emma's body had diminished quite a bit, probably thanks to the flesh of the snake.

"Why are you two following me?" Kane stopped and asked. "I said that the village is in the other direction."

Emma and Jacob looked at each other for a few moments, and as if they had reached some sort of agreement with their eyes alone, they answered as if that was a matter of fact.

"You seem like a good person, and you don't look much stronger than us," Jacob said. "If you think that the village isn't a place where you should live, I don't think it will be useful for me."

"That doesn't explain anything…" Kane frowned.

"Just like me, you put yourself at risk when you tried to help us," Jacob added. "I don't know what your goal is, but considering that you put your goal aside and at risk to save us, I think it would be a good idea to follow someone like you."

Kane rubbed his chin while he studied Jacob. It was quite hard to be sure if he really was thinking that since he looked like all the other male goblins. He couldn't say that he was a good judge of character, but having an ally like Jacob wasn't all that bad. He also risked his life to help Emma, after all.

If anything, if Jacob were a backstabber, he would wait until Emma's death to attack the snake while it was eating her. He also would obtain another weapon for free, so it was the best scenario for an asshole, but he didn't do that.

"What about you?" Kane asked while looking at Emma.

"I don't like to owe favors to anyone," Emma replied. "So, I will tag along with you guys until I feel like I repaid the favor."

Emma's reasoning was much more straightforward, so Kane didn't feel the need to think too much about her answer. Although she screamed and almost died, Kane could see that Emma wasn't traumatized. Of course, her actions could be some sort of act, but Kane wouldn't trust his back on them, so if they try something, Kane would gladly use them as bait when the opportunity arises. Kane sighed since he considered doing that, but in the end, he had to consider such a thing. He didn't know them, nor could he force them to go away, so he didn't have any other choice. In any case, being so paranoid about being backstabbed would be a bit tiresome. Still, at the very least, Kane knew that they would decrease his workload in the battles against the monsters for the time being.

"Well, if you two want to follow me, I won't stop you," Kane said. "However, we will have to divide all the work equally. But before that, I must warn you about something. It looks like the last bar will affect us more than we expected… at some moment, we might even lose the reason… that is why I told you two to go to the village."

"What do you mean by losing our reason?" Emma frowned.

"I don't know the details; I only know what the people of the village told me," Kane replied. "I don't feel the effects yet since I reincarnated as a goblin today. But it looks like once the lust bar becomes full, we will attack anything or anyone on sight to decrease the bar."

"For real?" Jacob asked. "This is bad…"

"As I said, I don't know if that is true… but considering the behavior of the people in that village, it seemed that is really the case," Kane answered. "Why the hell am I talking about this with two strangers… We can alleviate our needs alone, but only for a while. Again, that is only what I heard in the village."

Emma and Jacob looked at each other. Just like Kane, they couldn't imagine doing the deed with each other since goblins were uglier than humans. However, they were still quite concerned about the possibility of becoming sex beasts.

"Well, putting that aside," Kane said. "We will have to fight many times, so we have to organize ourselves to decrease the danger to our lives. We should walk a few meters away from each other."

Kane explained how the people of the village would hunt, the difference in number and status was clear since those three only became goblins that day, but it was the only thing they could do at the moment. Besides, since they didn't know each other very well, fighting so close would cause some problems, and in the worst-case scenario, they might kill each other by mistake.

There was also the possibility that Kane could be attacked by two snakes at the same; by focusing his senses, he would be able to react and deal with a single snake. However, if two attacked him, he would, without a doubt, die. He could only pray that he wouldn't suffer all that much, maybe that was asking too much, but if he couldn't pray to face a single monster at a time, he wanted at least that.
