It was a sunny, spring day and everything seemed quiet and calm. I was six and was sitting in the middle of the field while my sisters played when suddenly momma and poppa came up to us and told us to come greet the dragon king and his sons. I didn't know much about them, but I knew the Dragon King had eight sons.
The oldest, Dante, was a warrior. I had heard he took on an entire army of shadow creatures alone and survived, but he came back darker than when he had left. Then there is Jake, the jokester. I only heard he likes to play pranks. Jim and Tim are both twins. Mike, Bret, and Dameon, the triplets, I hear are playboys, whatever that means. The youngest, and the one set to take the crown, is Ares. No one really knows much about him but there is a rumor that he was cursed by a demon.
I followed my dad to the front lawn and stood beside him as three black SUVs pulled into the circular driveway in front of the entrance to our castle. Once the vehicles was stopped, two tall burley men, dressed in all black and wearing sunglasses to hide their eyes, stepped out of the first one and walked to the other vehicles opened their doors.
Once the men stepped aside, a tall, fair skinned man stepped out and looked around before smiling at my dad and stepping aside to let the remaining people in the vehicle come out.
"This is Draco girls, the king of dragons," my dad said before introducing us to him. He then proceeded to introduce each of the boys as they came out of the vehicles, but all of that was a blur to my uncaring mind. Up until a boy with tan skin and brown hair that almost seemed red where the sun touched it, stepped out of the last SUV. He looked like he didn't care and was the only one out of the bunch wearing blue jeans instead of slacks.
"Girls, this young man is Draco's youngest son, Ares. He is the crown prince of the dragons," my dad said and as he told Ares the names of my sisters and me he politely told each of us, "It's nice to meet you," but his eyes never left mine. He looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and surprise until his dad cleared his throat.
"She's pretty, isn't she? To bad Serenity ended up with the curse, isn't it?" Draco asked Ares.
"Dad, why are we here? The soul eater has no emotions so it's not like she would care if we missed her birthday party," Ares said looking up at his father.
My dad went to open his mouth to say his all to familiar retort to the nickname of out kind and the bash against my curse but before he could say anything a growl came from the woods behind us.
Suddenly a scythe appeared in my father's hand and the people we was just introduced to changed into the form of a dragon.
"Take the girls to the safe room," Poppa told Momma and she started running with us towards the front door but before we could reach it, what looked like a giant mangey dog appeared in front of it and we skidded to a stop.
A flaming sword appeared in my mother's hands and she turned to my oldest sister, Val, to tell her to get us out, but that was all the intruder needed. That one moment of distraction gave it an opportunity to jump on my mother, biting her throat and ripping it out.
I heard my father shout, "No," as a scream tore out of my throat, catching the attention of yet another of the mangey creatures that was now surrounding us.
As one of the creatures began to stalk towards me, a huge red dragon with pitch black wings landed next to me. It wrapped its tail around me and I swear I thought I heard it say, "She's mine! You can't have her," before it suddenly started breathing a bright blue flame that smelled like brimstones at the creatures. The battle was over almost as quickly as it begun.
Suddenly a voice that seemed to come from no where said, "It's too soon," then everything went black. The next thing I knew I was waking up in my room alone and my back stung as if it was burnt.
