Rachel did my hair up in a messy bun with a few stray curls framing my heart shaped face and my make-up was minimum giving me an elegant but effortless look.
I stood on the balcony near the grand staircase with my dad looking out at everyone who attended as the usher told him who all showed up tonight. As I listened to the list I figured out why my father was so optimistic about tonight.
Every year, my father invited every supernatural creature in the realms but one always denied the invitation since my mother died, the dragons. Tonight, however, not only did the dragons turn up, but the elusive "demon prince," Ares, was here.
"Are you ready, Serenity?" my father asked me.
"Just a few more minutes," I replied as I scanned the crowd one more time.
"Do, you feel anything?" He asked me with more then a hint of hopefulness in his voice but I had already became distracted as my eyes landed on a pair of oddly familiar ruby red eyes that seemed to be staring at me even though I was strategically hidden behind the pillar until I was announced.
The man they was attached to was like no other that I could recall ever seeing. He had messy brown hair and tan skin. He seemed strong but soft and judging by the fact that he was the only one dressed casually in a pair of jeans and a band shirt, he didn't care what anyone thought.
My dad cleared his throat in an attempt to get my attention.
"Huh, oh yea let's go now." I told my dad who replied with a smirk and a nod at the usher who blew the trumpet.
"Now announcing his highness, Grimorial Death and the guess of honor, the high princess, Serenity Death." he announced as my father took my arm and lead me down the grand staircase.
The whole time we was walking down the stairs, I kept my eyes ahead of me but I could feel those red eyes on me and chose to ignore it, however when I reached the bottom, the owner of those eyes was daring enough to block mine and my father's path with an older gentleman, to my surprise.
"I know it is custom for the first dance of the night to belong to the father, Grim, but could you find it in your heart to make an exception for my son, my old friend?" The older gentleman asked while his son just continued to stare at me, silently, making me feel like he could see straight through to my hollow soul.
Even more shocking, however, was my father's, who has never strayed from customs before, reply, "Of course Draco, my friend. I am glad y'all finally decided to show face again." After that, he and Draco walked away while the red eyed stranger grabbed my hand and led me to the middle of the ball room.
He leaned down as the music started and whispered in my ear, "you look lovely for someone who is supposed to be a heartless soul eater."
A small giggle escaped my lips, "So, you have heard of me and know my name but I know nothing about you, besides that you are different then everyone else and your dad is friends with my dad," I whispered as I let him lead me through a waltz.
"Oh, but you have heard of me, mate. Of this I am sure. My name is Ares." He said and the strangest thing yet happened. My heart skipped a beat and I stopped in my tracks and stared at him.
I thought it was only a moment but it must have been longer then I thought because next thing I knew both of our parents and my siblings came running up and started asking what happened and everyone was staring at us. Then everything got bright and I heard, "It is time," come from no one in particular before everything went black.
