Chapter 37 - The gift...

October 2010...

Savannah walked to her wardrobe and opened the doors. She looked through her closet, frantically looking for an outfit to wear.

' I'm sure I kept that shirt here. Where did it go'. Savannah thought to herself as she scattered the clothes in her closet.

Today was Savannah's second session with Katherine and she wanted to use this as a way to know more about Katherine and most importantly, her relationship with Nathan. No matter what, she couldn't screw this up.

After looking through her wardrobe for some time, she finally found what she was looking for. ' Finally!' she thought to herself as she brought out a black and navy blue shirt from her wardrobe, "now all I need is a pair of jeans to go with it", Savannah said as she continued looking through her closet when her phone chimed.

She closed her closet and walked to her bedside table. Nathan texted her.

"The location has been changed. Now, instead of coming to were you came during the last session. You'd be coming to Katherine's house. I'd send you the location ". Savannah read the text and was , shocked. She didn't really expect such a change by this time. The session usually starts by 12:30 and it's already 10:00. Why would Katherine change things so suddenly and just inform her now?

Savannah placed her phone back on the bedside table before making her way back to the closet.

After taking the clothes she was planning on wearing, she made her way to the bathroom to get ready.

It didn't take longer then a few minutes before Savannah got out of the bathroom with a towel tied around her. She walked to her dressing mirror and sat infront of it. She put on her lotion before slipping on her outfit and spraying some perfume on herself.

She then combed her hair and used a rubber band to tie it. Feeling satisfied with her look, she then looked at herself in the mirror for some time before touching up her makeup.

After fully getting dressed, she was about to pack her purse when her phone chimed, ' it must be the address to Katherine's house', Savannah thought before picking her phone from the bedside table to check what it was, and as expected, it was the address.

' Maryland street, the 5th block, opposite Winefred lane. Please come there early, Katherine would be really busy after your session'. Savannah read the text before placing her phone back on the bedside table. She still had a lot of time before it was time for her session, so she didn't have to stress about rushing now.

She was about to go down stairs, when she remembered that she forgot to arrange her closet. She got up from where she sat and made her way to her closet. She reluctantly opened the closet doors when she heard the sound of something break. She immediately looked down and saw a broken figurine. She knelt down and was about to pick up the broken pieces when she heard the door break open, she slowly looked up and saw her mom standing by the door.

She slowly looked back down at the figurine as a tear drop slowly fell from her cheeks. She closed her eyes as memories of the day she got the figurine came flooding back. She remembered every little detail of how that day went.

She opened her eyes as she looked at the broken figurine that lay on the floor.

Her chest hurt her so bad as more tears fell from her cheeks as her mother rushed to hug her.

" Don't worry Savannah", Amanda started but Savannah was too distracted by the figurine to notice, "It's all in the past". Amanda said as Savannah hugged her back. The two of them stayed that way for a while before Savannah let go of her mother and rushed out of the room with the broken figurine pieces in hand and ran to Adam's room. Adam's room was at the end of the corridor, it wasn't much of a distance from her room.

As soon as she got there, she tried hard to open the door but to no avail. With tears streaming down her face, she was about to give up when she remembered where her mother kept the key to the room on Adam's funeral she bent down and looked under the carpet, a sigh of relief left her lips when her she felt something made of metal underneath it.

She brought out the key from underneath the carpet and used it to open the door. Once she heard a click, she pushed open the rusted door.

Her eyes scanned the room, looking for what she didn't know. The room was dusty and stuffy . Everything was the same way it was the day Adam died. Nothing changed, nothing was replaced, everything was the way Adam left it that day.

This would be the first time someone opened the door since that day.

Savannah slowly walked is as her eyes looked around the place. She was almost starting to forget how the room even looked like. By this time , Savannah was completely numb. She felt completely empty. She couldn't cry, smile, speak or even react to anything.

She continued to look around the room until her knee hit against the bed.

Memories of Adam came rushing into her mind like as though she was watching a movie. The simple reality of this person being gone, never to come back made Savannah so confused, her mind couldn't interpret this information.

She unconsciously sat on the bed as the broken figurine pieces also fell on the bed. All of a sudden, just like an electric shock. Savannah got back to reality as she abruptly moved. She quickly got up from the bed and rushed to the cupboard and opened it. A wave of dust hit her as she frantically looked through the wardrobe

She threw clothes out from the wardrobe, looking for the figurine he was gifted with on his birthday. After looking endlessly for it,she was about to give up when she realised that she hadn't looked through his bedside drawers. She immediately started ran to his bed and sat down beside the drawer. She opened it and just as she expected, she saw the figurine placed carefully in the drawer.

Tears started to stream down her face. She had tried hard for so long to act normal and strong in front of everyone about it. Her mother needed her support dearly at this time, she was the only one she had.

before his death, her brother was the eldest child and the heir to the family's business. Now that he's no longer with them, Savannah has to take all the responsibility. She has to cope with her brother's death and all the responsibilities are in her hands.

She slowly fell from the bed as she looked down at the figurine in her hands. This room, this figurine and everything in this house emitted Adam's presence. She felt a huge hole in her life because of the Adam's absence.

She closed her eyes as a tear drop fell on the figurine. Memories of her time with Adam flashed by her eyes. If only she made the most of it.

She opened her eyes and the first thing that crossed her mind was the broken figurine that lay on the bed. She immediately put her focus back on the bed before looking around the bed for the figurine. As soon as she felt it, she quickly grabbed it and looked at both the figurine's in her hands.

Is this the only thing she could keep as a memory of Adam? She thought to herself as she kept her eyes glued on the figurine's.

She was still held on that topic when she heard a familiar voice.

" Are you still thinking of him?" Amanda said as she walked closer to Savannah. Savannah quickly turned around to see her mother. She couldn't answer the question she asked her. Was she really still thinking of someone who died so long ago? It was a normal thing since she couldn't get over his death, but, how long will she continue like this?

Amanda sat down next to her and held her hand. The two of them didn't say anything as Savannah rested her head on Amanda's shoulder.

"Mom?", Savannah started after a while of silence, "How did you react when dad died?" Her question made Amanda turn to look at her. She hadn't heard Savannah say the word 'dad' in so long it felt extinct. This question really shocked Amanda. She didn't know how to answer it.

Amanda patted Savannah's head before saying,"When your father died, I didn't know how to react. I didn't know what to think. It came so suddenly that I felt so lost. Then I realised that I had to take care of you and your brother all by myself. I stood strong and kept you and your brother first", for a while Amanda didn't say anything and just looked at the ground, before turning to look back at Savannah, "Now wipe your tears". Amanda said as she wiped Savannah's tears.

The two of them sat there without saying anything, just staring into space...
